Dizi (Chinese Flute) - Difference of Cheap Dizi and Professional Dizi, Review and Comparison

Why some dizi (Chinese flute) cost $5 and some cost up to hundreds or thousands? Here you will see the difference of cheapos and pro-grade dizi compared side by side!
Keep in mind that we are playing the dizi without any reverb or special effect to keep it as real-life sound as possible so you can really hear the difference. It's really amazing how the good quality stuff performs! With higher quality dizi, you can use less effort to blow the notes and get better sound too!
Special thanks to my student Tin Yee in Hong Kong who got me these pro grade Dizi in the video, it is amazing and STUNNING good! Without her help, I will still need to stick with the cheapos and torture my mouth!

The inexpensive one sounds nice! Of course the more expensive one sounds stronger and purer. It has a lovely voice! But at least if a person can’t afford the expensive one, he can start with one he can afford. I like the low mellow one the most. It has a mysterious voice of adventure and intrigue. Beautiful!

I started with a 25$ dizi from amazon 2,5 years ago before I finally moved up to one of the higher grade flutes. The difference is noticeable, although I have to say that the lower grade dizi isn't bad by any means! The higher graded dizi is also a bit heavier (different material though ... if you go up that much in price I also wanted to increase in style ^^)

Me too but I'm still having trouble getting sound from it !! And what is this membrane thing ? To change the key ? I'm finding I may need to cover a hole with duct tape to get any sound. Why have that extra hole if it needs to be covered ? That's the only way I can get any sound. I played a metal woodwind flute for 30 years so I thought this would be easy hahaha.

I watched a lot of KZbin, studied the guide that came with the recorder. I listened to music, which I love anyway. I practiced every day. I'm still playing and love it. I also play a Quena flute. The key is try to play songs you know. I started playing because I have COPD/Advanced Emphysema. I was trying to expand my lungs to help me breathe. I very much enjoy the lower key "concert" dizi, and not just because it exhibited more reverb. but, can you recommend a reliable location to purchase such an instrument? (please do not simply say eBay, as I need more guidance to discern I am truly obtaining a quality instrument) I do live near a China Town in Bostob, MA... but I recall only ever seeing "gift shop dizis" .. I will research if there are quality music stores there. also, on the lower dizi, I notice the two holes at the far end of the instrument. what are those for? thank you

I have watched more of your (and other's) videos on dizi. and I have many of my questions now answered :) I am still searching for a good hard-case for the dizi to keep it safe during travels. Would you recommend other things to keep it from cracking during travel, such as a humidifier or something else? I used to practice dizi 10 years ago. I practiced on a cheap dizi from a gift shop. I learned to produce notes and different octaves, along with some techniques for further decorating the sound. I plan on purchasing another cheap dizi to reacquire my skills.

The "reverb" is actually a sustain caused by the "dimo", a reed membrane built into the flute. Because the size of the flute is larger and the harmonic wave is lower, the body of the flute stores more of the resonant energy for a fraction of a second. The principle is similar, though not exactly, to how an acoustic guitar body affects the vibration of the strings. Even if the string is muted, the guitar continues to resonate for a brief moment.

CosmicOsmium and does that control noise reduction and compression as well?
@michaelrice3329
@michaelrice3329 5 жыл бұрын
Cosmic, Do you have any idea how instruments work? That's not what a dimo even does. The point of the membrane is to create a buzzing sound to enhance the natural sound of the instrument. No membrane in the world can create reverb like this as reverb is only felt when the original sound and the reflected sound wave arrive at different intervals to the listener Eg. Large room with hard walls or more in this case effects added to highlight the instrument. If you dont know the answer to something, dont just make shit up, just makes you look like an idiot.

Could anyone tell me the hanzi name of the song played at 4:16? I’ve loved this piece for a while, but was only able to find it under its English name ‘Empty Temple’ on Soundcloud and Spotify. It’s taken it’s place as the favourite piece in my heart. I’d love to know the Mandarin for it so I could find more versions of it/ material on it

Friend, I want to buy good quality Dizi for my daughter, what is your recommendation. She self learned from one I bought from Yunnan but I want her to have a hand on a real good one. Please let me know at your earliest convenience. How much is the low tone one at 7:24 minutes?

On a Clover-Covered Hill hahaha! Not sure who made it now because I am not around the dizi at the moment, but definitely it's handcrafted and cost about $100 USD or something. It's a bass G key. Very nice tone!

Is it possible to play a dizi without membrane? Also, dizi's sound seems to be sharp compared to xiao, and I like the sound of xiao. Is there any side-blown chinese flute of which sound is similar to xiao? (I like the sound of the black xiao that you played in other vidoes. I think you said it is southern xiao). I did try to learn a quena (andean's xiao), but it gives too pressure to my teeth. So I want to learn side-blown flute, but I want the flute of which sound is similar to a xiao.

+Burukhan you can try a bass G or A key dizi, those are very deep tone dizi, but more expensive and bigger in size, they are very nice. Search up my bass G key dizi videos, sounds very deep and smoothing too. You cannot play dizi without covering that membrane hole, but you can use a piece of clear tape instead of the membrane, which works too, more mellow sound too. Some don't prefer the tape method because they love to stick to the traditional stuff, but personally, the tape works so much better to get a mellow tone. It's music man, you can have your own style and preference too! Who give a shit about traditional or not, hahaha! Here is a good footage of the bass G key - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ema9ommbqN6jaLs

Thank you, I truely enjoy your vids. But 1 major difference to note that I have encountered in purchasing a cheap dizi is, inside the embouchure there is a plug. Often this plug in the cheap dizi is made of crunched up paper that often has air leaks. You cannot get sound from a flute that leaks air as such. However, the answer for this challenge is to replace the paper plug with a cork as a plug and return the flute to its proper tuning, or key. A rubber plug will work great as well. This will make the cheap flute more playable for anyone. Best regards!

@@paulree4131 approximately 1/2 inch, more or less from the embouchure or until notes are tuned proper.

Hi, I really love your video. I want to buy a good dizi, but I don't know where to buy it. I'm living in USA, and I couldn't find any dizi store around my local. I'm considering to buy it online, -Should I buy from Amazon, Ebay, Redmusicshop or, Easonmusicstore? I used to buy a dizi from Amazon, its 25$, but I don't feel that's good one - Can you give me some advice how to choose a good dizi, like price, signature, stamp, or good maker? Hope to see your respond

Tung Lung I have played with dizi that cost $5 and some that cost $20 range on amazon, they all work... but then if you like you can buy from music stores online which is more reliable in terms of service, and if the dizi is cracked they can send you a replacement... I have not bought any dizi from those stores though, because mine are all hand picked by my student in Hong Kong and shipped to me. :) Mostly the price tag tells you the truth there with those dizi. A good dizi is more pricy, that's often the case

How much does the second flute cost? Is there a more traditional way of holding the dizi, or is it personal preference either way?
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 10 жыл бұрын
It cost about $100 range in CAD, and yes there is a traditional way of holding the dizi, which I will demonstrate in the future vid coming up soon. See my new dizi vide and you might notice I changed to that method too. It's not a personal preference, it's for better control and also less tiring for the arms, and also your fingers can move faster and freely while not locking up the joints. I will explain that in a tutorial video. It's really a big improvement but also a big change with the brain logic.... I suggest starting by using all fingers to cover the holes like how you would do with a recorder, that's easy for the brain to digest and understand for the beginning stage.
