If you have coyotes nearby they will use tactics to lure your dog into an ambush you might want to consider getting a few more dogs

I was concerned about my Anatolian when I first got her because I had heard/read about the agression also. She takes her cues from me as far a people are concerned, but she is very territorial with other animals...like relentless. Excellent vision, hearing, smell. She'll smell a coyote before you even see one. She is very good with my developmentally disabled son, and my elderly mother...she knows they are different, and is exceptionally gentle around them. I've had Great Dane, Pit Bulls, Husky, and by far, she is the best dog I have ever had.

We have akbash/pyrenees mix guardian dogs on our homestead and they are tremendous at their jobs and such lovable sweethearts. They equally care for homestead animals as well as the grandchildren. Ours are a bit larger than the typical pyr, as we needed the size. I agree that a homestead needs to have LGDs and each breed can provide a lil different benefits. May God Bless you for sharing.

We ended up choosing CAucasian Ovcharka Mountain Dogs and have no regrets. We wanted large dogs capable of protecting the property, house & home from bears, cougars & wolves while at the same time bonding with the family & the animals. Our 9 month old Caucasians are pushing 150-160lbs & are the perfect cross we were looking for

Homesteading cat selection is even more important to protect your grain and feed stores. You need at least 4 farm cats.

Pyrs are a great choice....great temperament, and outstanding livestock guardian, and probably most people friendly of all the LGD breeds. Our Pyr has been a great addition to our homestead and we plan to add two more. I see Odin does the paw thing too!!

So which is better a Maremma, Kuvasz, Akbash or Great Pyreenes and can anyone tell them apart?
@tritchie62723 жыл бұрын
You made some interesting points. I like your attitude that what works for 1 may not work for everybody. I watched a video of some farmer in Vermont who depends on a maremma. He said from his research the Maremma was quieter and stayed closer to home and the livestock. But then it looked like his setup was different than yours. He had neighbors and fences.I don't have any personal experience with LGD,but I have been doing some research.Well I guess you can't call it real research. But that's how I tend to refer to all the reading and video watching on the subject I've been doing. It ain't like I'm a scientist or anything. In large part because I find the topic very interesting. And what you said jives with my reading and other video's I've watched. The fact that your running more than 1 also goes with what I've read.

I prefer the CATAHOULA breed. The small strain. They hunt,track,flush,herd,guard. They subdue alligators n fight badgers too. Great for baying hogs. Good w/farm animals n family. The small strain is hard to find.

As I'm sure you have already had this consideration, what is the plan for feeding such large canines now and after outside resupply halts?
@therealpreparedhomestead5 жыл бұрын
They're pretty good at scavenging for scraps now plus we raise animals for eating so the idea is that will provide. We mostly feed them a raw diet already.

We just bought two Male Great Pyrenees. We get to pick them up this Saturday. I just also subscribed to your channel. My wife and l moved to Missouri 16 months ago and did purchase 4 acres right outside of Bennett Springs just 4 months ago. We do have few neighbors within a quarter mile but they have large dogs that bark, so I'm not worried about the barking but I really don't want them to wander off so it looks like I'm going to be driving alot of T posts LOL... I'm glad I found your channel brother. God bless you and yours. Peace.

I have an anatolian pyraneese. Half and half. Best dog ever. I also have a pure bred anatolian. He is definitely very aloof and absolutely anyone he does not associate with family is a stranger/ threat. He is one loyal dog though. My half and half is cautious and protective but, somewhat goofy and less likely to react offensively rather than defensively.

Travis...an absolutely beautiful Dog. Just wondering if you could advize of any good resources to locate land in the Miss/Ark Ozarks. Thank you.
@therealpreparedhomestead5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! In my experience in the Ozarks I have found the better deals on homestead land in more of the central areas of both Missouri and Arkansas. Stay at least 30 miles away from the large cities; Springfield, Branson, Joplin, Fayetteville, Harrison, Mt Home. Landwatch dot com is a good site to find land I think. It can at least give you an idea of the cheaper areas. The cheaper land areas tend to be the less populated ones.

Fate allowed myself and mom to adopt a free puppy. The vet thinks she is mountain curr and shepherd. We were told by the elderly couple giving free puppies away she was a lab mix. She appears smart and is learning quickly. We have two dogs in their mid teens and hope this puppy will grow up to be a good watch dog. She will be an indoor dog.

Great vid and insights. I am researching LGDs. Haven't decided which breed to get. The neighbors recently got a 3/4 AS1/4 GP pup. From a local breeder. They seem like good dogs. We have a rescue Alaska Husky spayed female 6 yo and a 10 yo golden retriever. Both good dogs . work well for running off moose if the snow isn't too deep. And I think they would run a bear. Smallish, quick dogs are good for running off a bear. But wolves and coyotes could be a problem. Lynx will tree quite easily so I'm not overly concerned about them. Our sled dog has a good guardian instinct. But at 60 lbs is a bit small.
