This is Nick Curcione on my wife's computer. Excellent video, you covered all the relevant points. After 50 years of challenging bluewater brutes on fly tackle I give the nod to the new Shilton. I recently took a mako, estimated at 400-450 lbs on a GR 12. The reel performed flawlessly. From the smooth drag to the way it retrieves line the reel is superbly engineered and and constructed.

Never thought I'd see the day when a Mako fly reel was featured on a KZbin video, especially since they've been available for so many years. Thanks for this video, I appreciate it greatly!

Firstly thank you Kyle, I watched this when you first released it...outstanding. I think in terms of Cork drag reels Tibor, Abel and Shilton are substantial enough to handle any species. I've had Billy Pate's and Tibors and caught many many Bonefish and False Albacore, a few dozen Tarpon, 3 Permit, bunches of Jacks and too many Redfish to name. I wish the Signature 11-12s was a few ounces lighter but its not, it is however a substantial reel that with a little maintenance will last a life time and stop most anything. What are your thoughts about other cork drag manufacturers. Consequently even though I'm full with Tibors I've been thinking about the SR Shiltons..Thank You!

Awesome thorough review ! I’ve been considering picking up a Shilton SR9 here in the U.S for east coast stripers and your video solidifies my decision! My brother had a nautilus x series which failed the first time out on the surf, seal went out…. Being self serviceable is huge for me.

Great review . Much appreciated. From ur podcast on reels . I gather if you could only have one reel it would be a shilton. Bomb proof. Question what bomb proof rod are you installing on your 10 and 12 weights shiltons .probably only get too do this a couple times in my life. Certainly don’t want it ruined because of equipment failures. Thanks sincerely James m. Dees

Nice review Kyle, I’m about to upgrade to my second tarpon reel here in the Florida keys and I’m between Tibor and Shilton. I tried both out in the local fly shop but I think your review put me over the edge to side with Shilton

Hey Tim! I agree, for those long popping sessions, lightweight helps for sure! Hope you're well!

Save up..then save up some more ! Buy the best you can afford, even used. Life's too short for an ugly reel !

Well thanks for the 37 minute plus Ad for Shilton, and the reason they cost less than the USA reels they copy is due to cheaper labour cost in the RSA.
