Cleft works fine as long as you make sure the cambium lines of scion and rootstock cross at some point. Whip and tongue is more difficult to execute but it's almost impossible to fail cambium cross at some point.

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 ай бұрын
It's better to prune them while they are dormant, so I can only do it at the end of the year. In most cases just keep the center of the tree open and prune any branch that grow excessively high to keep the tree under control. Most of the techniques I use in this video regarding Open Center Pruning can be used in fig trees - kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2m0mGSQYsiSi5Y

You mostly talk about changing varieties, when you cut off all of the rootstock after the graft takes. Could you make a video on framework grafting (when you are happy with what you have, just want to add more)? For example, threre is a young but estsblished pluot tree with 4 varieties, and you would like to add a 5th pluot or a plum variety to this tree, without removing any of the existing ones. How to make this addition grow well? A lot of people have smaller yards, not farms :), and would like to add, not replace! Thanks!

What are your thoughts on chip budding in spring? I know its more of a late season technique but it can be useful for wonky scionwood or just stretching out your supplies. I have plans to graft a Che onto a small potted Osage orange rootstock this way soon.

I use chip budding a lot in the spring. It works quite well. I even use the chip bud from the lower part of the scion (that would be discarded when making the cut for other types of graft).

Excellent video. Quick question….on one of the bark grafts it appears as if the long , sloping cut faces outwards not facing the rootstock. Is this a mistake? btw how sharp are your knives. ? Shaving sharp? Do you use sharpening stones? What’s your final grit size? Stopping as well?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Ай бұрын
No, it's not a mistake. That outward cut won't do nothing regarding the graft union. It's just to slim down the scion to produce a better fit under the bark. Check my videos on grafting knife use, selection and sharpening, like these two (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3LWkqulpt-Ibpo and kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5THf3iigZqMfqs). Boa noite.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Ай бұрын
@mjollnyr77
@mjollnyr77 Ай бұрын
