The other day i saw a PC one of my friends built about 4 years ago. It had an i7 2700 and a MSI gtx 660ti, both of which were powered by a Vorago "500W" PSU, and even worse, since this sketchy PSU didn't have any PCIe power connections the GPU was powered by a 2 molex to 6pin PCIe adapter but only one molex cable was connected, since the only other one it had was connected to the hard drive. I was amazed that the thing turned on, and even more when I realized that it hadn't blown up in 4 years.
@ElZamo928 жыл бұрын
This friend just told me that he had his ram die in this system....twice.... And then i asked him why he hadn't bought a new PSU, and he told me "because it is too expensive", but we all know that three sets of 8GB of RAM are more expensive than one decent PSU...

To be honest though I wouldn't go with a r9 290 in the first place. The card runs very hot and eats a lot of power. You can get a GTX 970 for a similar price. An Autistic Dog and Jtheos I think Tek Syndicate is more of a political/networking type of guy with a hint of hardware wizard (Like Linus and all the others :D). He differs to all the others. Which is to my liking but I guess there is always a hater or more ^_^ . Don't get me wrong I don't hate on any hardware reviewer because they all want to help us choose and learn about the best hardware as well as efficiency and budget wise. So why hate when they all want to help?

its funny... i heard cm was a terrible brand for psus
@wimpy40410 жыл бұрын
They've switched OEMs a couple of times so some of their older ones are questionable. They started using Seasonic though for newer series (like the many-times-mentioned V-series) and they've been very good according to reviews.
@stephengosselin10 жыл бұрын
then not just get a seasonic?
@wimpy40410 жыл бұрын
If you mean why not just buy a Seasonic in the first place, then sometimes Seasonic might not be available at a retailer while CM is. Also, I'm not sure why but rebranded units are cheaper than original Seasonic units. Might be that Seasonic cherry picks the best units for themselves and sells off the rest to other companies, much like how Micron/Samsung/etc do with flash memory chips.

KG-Virus Thank you! Do you think I will damage my components if I buy a PSU that has extra power? I saw a LinusTechTips video about it where he said you should have a PSU that has 20% more than your needs to be ideal. Any thoughts about that?
@KGVirus8 жыл бұрын
i don't think so , by the way you can use EVGA power calculator ( www.evga.com/power-meter/ ) to calculate the your power needs , it will add 100W-150W so you can be on the safe side in the future
@Ubeogesh10 жыл бұрын
This tech quickie video is as dumb as possible. Why didn't you tell anything about current rates and voltage lines? These are the main parameters you should be looking at, not at those "power" numbers. The problem with PSUs can be when its rated at 500 watts, but when you look to current rates (they all are specified on the sticker on each and every PSU), it can only deliver like 24 amps on the 12v lines, which is only 288 watts really (Power = Voltage * Current). The rest of 500 watts goes to 5v and 3.3v lines, that never ever will need that much power - CPUs and GPUs and hard drive *disk spinning motors* use 12 volts.
@sammyjc8910 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I bought a PSU that said it was a 600W PSU. Ace I think the company was called. Within 5 mins of booting up, I smelt smoke and my computer died. I then bought a CIT 600W PSU and it hasn't ever let me down. In fact they are so good I was using a 450W by then to power my GTX 770 OC Edition. Says it all right. My system was saying it was using 480 watts of power yet it was getting it from a 450W PSU. Since then I have a 600w non modular non 80+ cert just a bog standard PSU for a cheap ass like me and I would recommend them to ANYONE who is on a serious budget.
@Ubeogesh10 жыл бұрын
Mega Know Disagree... techquicke videos are meant to be simple for amateurs, but this one just was over-dumbed-down. For example the video about Hyper Threading is very good. There is no need for amateur to know about processor registers, ALUs, FPUs and cache, and that video described the HT very good as a black box technology. But to choose a PSU one needs to consider its current rates on 12v rails and understand that maximum total power is distributed between different rails. That is some technical explanation rather than stupid "buy a PSU from a respectable brand with big experience".
@hampuslytz539310 жыл бұрын
sammyjc89 Joke's on you man, If you smelled smoke and the PSU died, than clearly the PSU had no undervolt and overcurrent protection,(or they were not working which means that it was not properly tested) which means that you should have bought a better quality PSU in the first place. Have accidentally short circuited my PSU, when modding, no prob, just disconnect and reconnect the power cord. runs great today still. On GF's comouter when upgrading CPU it got too much to handle for the PSU, simply shut down, she did this a few times without me knowing, still runs the same PSU today ,no prob.
@hampuslytz539310 жыл бұрын
well if you're an expert already, these vids are not aimed at you at all, so quit complaining! Bsides, any decent quality unit will have the power distributed properly across the 3,5, and 12v rails, and this wil not be a problem. As he mentioned in the vid "buying a reputable brand" and you won't have to worry =) Besides if it's that big of a deal, just get the next bigger size and don't worry about it.
@Ubeogesh10 жыл бұрын
Hampus Lytz that is a stupid solution. "Just buy the most expensive stuff and don't worry". You can answer this way about any hardware. but people want to know stuff about hardware because they don't want just to buy expensive things because they're expensive.

I have a Ryzen 2700x and a GTX 960 FTW, Corsair Vengeance 2x8 GB RAM, and a SanDisk Plus 1 TB SSD. I frequently run rendering tasks that only work on CPU, utilizing 15 threads, and leave one thread open for my usual 20 Chrome tabs, several videos, and several 3D/art programs. 450 watts works just fine. PSUs operate best at half-load. A supply rated with a sustained load of 1000 Watts performs best outputting 500 watts. Since your PC usage scales up and down between idling and full throttle on rendering, your best bet is to make sure your PSU is just a bit above the max load. For most gaming PCs, 400 watts is in the sweet spot. 500-600 if you're using the highest end GPUs. If you use a 750 watt PSU and you're only running one CPU and one GPU... please don't.

My computer has a freezing issue while playing games, or before the games even start up. This usually only occurs on more graphics intense games like GTA V, or Battlefield, etc. The freezing stops everything, even sound, and can only be fixed by performing a force shutdown. What I did notice was that the PSU was pretty hot and that it only had 430w. I presume this is a problem with the PSU? ASUS 970 PRO GAMING/AURA AMD FX-8350 GTX 1060 3gb 8GB RAM ?????????????
