As of 22/3/2016 the fastest M.2 SSD is the Samsung 950 Pro NVMe SSD in either 256 GB or 512 GB capacities. Those are plugged into a M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 port, with connectivity of up to 32 GB/s, and this SSD can reach a theoretical speed of 2500 MB/s Read and 1500 MB/s Write. They are also the fastest SSD you can get for the price. *Edit: By connectivity i mean bandwidth.

I'm going to say it means mobile storage version 2. It replaces mSATA as a laptop storage interface. It was originally called NGFF (Next Generation Form Factor). As for the more rare desktop version (U.2), I have no idea why it's called that.

Rusty Rivet Absolute bollox, sata power connectors are the worst thing ever, they are thin and cheap and they brake easily, they should have made a more robust connector for HDD power like a small square block. sata power connectors cannot handle the stress and weight of cables especially if you unplug frequently and move things around a lot. molex power cables are much more sturdy and don't brake.

first of all, check your motherboard's compatibility with the m.2 bandwith. Newer versions of motherboard like z170 and x99 have support to pcie 3.0 x4. Some older versions like 1150 chipset motherboards will only have pcie 2.0 x2 m.2 support. so that means if you buy the top of the line m.2 ssd like samsung 950 pro (that supports pcie 3.0 x4) but you have an old motherboard that only support 2.0 x2 (10 gbit/s) you won't be taking the full advantage and will be having only slightly better performance than a regular sata 3 ssd speed. If you let me know your motherboard, I might be able to help you out finding a good m.2 ssd for your rig.

what about bottlnecks because of the CPUs PCI e lanes?
@kobathor
@kobathor 8 жыл бұрын
+emocan126 Typically the M.2 PCI-E slots on a motherboard are controlled by the chipset's PCI-E lanes, so the CPU gets to keep all of its lanes for things like GPU's and the like.
@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka 8 жыл бұрын
+Koby Dunham If it says that M.2 is controlled by chipset PCIE-lanes, then those are the same lanes as your GPU. So if your CPU has a maximum amount of 16 lanes, and you use a PCI-E M.2 card, you will have 8 + 4 lanes left to play with. That is the major trade-off if using M.2 on normal LGA1151 mobos. I was hoping for increased PCI-E support when skylake was launched, seeing how the X99-platform could handle 28 - 40 lanes. I hoped for a shift into a minimum of 28-lane standard for consumer chips, while X-series would boost to like 80 lanes. But I guess we have to wait for that change then. BTW: Why aren't there any mobos that can handle both DDR3 and DDR4 memory out there? Would make for a more gentle transition into newer chipsets. E.g. my mobo can handle both DDR2 and DDR3.
@kobathor
@kobathor 8 жыл бұрын
Wistbacka When I say chipset lanes, I mean the chipset has its *own* seperate lanes from the CPU provided lanes. That's why you can SLI GPU's *and* use an M.2 PCI-E card at the same time with a CPU like a 4790k (which has 16 lanes.) SLI requires 8 PCI-E lanes/GPU, so you'd think it wouldn't work, but the chipset provides a few extras.
@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka 8 жыл бұрын
+Koby Dunham Okay. This is something I've been uncertain of. I hope you are correct, cause that would solve some problems I have myself, but I've read both sides of the stories on various sites, so I'm not entirely certain of what is true and false (no disrespect against you). Unfortunately, these things are not made very clear on mobo-makers webpage be it ASUS, AsRock, Gigabyte or MSI... None of them really explains what is possible to combine. But everyone are super quick to mention how AMAZING M.2 is....
@kobathor
@kobathor 8 жыл бұрын
Wistbacka M.2 itself isn't amazing, other than being small. PCI-E M.2 is amazing, since it has much more bandwidth than SATA.
