I just wanted to leave a comment saying that your videos have inspired me to finally pick up an instrument. I picked a six hole pendant ocarina to try to ease myself into it. While I was a little disappointed to see how limited I was in the number of full songs I could play, it was definitely an issue I expected while purchasing it. Thanks again for the motivation.

David Erick Ramos - Ocarina One question. I ordered a few song books from songbird ocarina, but they seem to only have tabs. Where would you recommend going to find sheet music?

+Richard Bean I also bought a 6 hole . Wanting to try the easy route first as I cant even read music. It is an oval shape and altough looks wooden, is clay. Interested in how your progression is and how things are working for you. any help and suggestions are appreciated. thank you.

Daniella Hayes I've still been using the tab songbooks that I originally bought with the ocarina. Honestly, it's been surprisingly easy to pick up and learn. The biggest issue I'm dealing with currently is the fact that I have slight natural tremors in my hands. It makes it a little more difficult to make some of the quicker transitions from note to note. Other than that though, I'm really enjoying it and will probably be moving on to some more complex songs here soon. One thing that I've noticed is that, at least in my case, the clay pendant ocarinas are not very durable. My daughter happened to drop mine once and, while it showed no outward signs of damage, it tended to have a hard time making the right sound on the highest notes afterward. The only thing I can think is that there may have been some internal cracking that occured. So I ordered a new one and haven't run into any problems since.

thank you so very much for the information . I intend to practice more once the weather subsides. I live with others in a farm house...and wouldnt want to offend. I plan on taking it hiking and kayaking come spring. i appreciate the help. Good luck with the playing. Keep in touch. Daniella

Oh wow, I remember watching this video about 12 years ago. I was around 13 years back then (this video was about 2 years old then). I remember how I really wanted an ocarina when I discovered they existed IRL (a ceramic blue like the on in OoT) but shopping online from Sweden wasn't a thing back then if you bought stuff overseas (I found out about Ebay). I was fortunate enough to get hold of one since a relative was visiting the US and I asked him to order one of eBay then bring it back, which he did. I showed the ocarina for my friends in Sweden (all of which loved the Zelda series) after learned some easy zelda songs and they were all so jealous of me having an ocarina. So I lent out the ocarina for them to practice and told them to watch your videos to learn how to play. Then, we all gathered to do a OoT game run together on my N64 I had back then in our cellar and we played along on my ocarina when Link played ocarina in the game. That summer break was so awesome. I'm turning 26 this year, doing the usual stuff someone would do at 26. But watching this and your older videos brings out that inner nerd child of mine! :D I still have the ocarina at home! This brings back so much nostalgia. Thank you for the memories David!

You know, when I first heard of the Legend of Zelda and the Ocarina of Time, I was like "What the f**k is an ocarina?". I just thought it was some sort of magical item made up from the fictional world that is the Legend of Zelda. Then I watched an episode of Adventure Time called "Ocarina" and I asked my brother "Is thing for real?" I probably was not paying much attention to the episode as some AT episodes do that to me, but my brother informed me that it was an instrument. And here I was thinking that it was some sort of talisman thingy. LOLXD the sound are much soothing and welcoming compared to those annoying plastic recorder kids get in middle school. I recently dig up the old sticker clad thing and played a tune and got sick of the weird sound. I should try to find a good one and learn to play. Your vid was great. Thumbs up =)

It really depends on the ocarina. Where did you buy yours? Do you have a link?
@UltimateMustacheX
@UltimateMustacheX 9 жыл бұрын
David Erick Ramos It's STL Ocarina. It came with a rupee 6-hole soprano. www.stlocarina.com/ztenor3s.html It sounds fine from what I can tell, I just didn't think about needing some time for things like ensuring the holes get covered properly with each new note or that my fingers cover the main hole, completely, when using the sub-holes. (basic beginners things that come with a new instrument). After learning one instrument, It feels like I should automatically be able to play all others. Though it's really just because I don't feel like "learning" again. I can already play a few zelda songs, albeit a bit slower. The booklets I got use numbers instead of notes, so I'll probably look up the standard sheet music soon so I can tie my fingers to actual notes.

Hello, thank you for this video! I have dreamed of playing an ocarina since childhood, and I decided to finally do it this week and luckily saw your video! Can you PLEASE help me with a few questions, though? 1. My inspiration was definitely the Zelda games, but I want one that sounds and plays well. Can you please suggest a brand/maker with a similar style one or maybe even a replica or 3 (for options) which are actually good/well made? 2. Which of the tones/pitches are the one used in the Zelda franchis? Particularly in the original NES and SNES games? While I desire to play MUCH more than game themes/intros, I still have that childhood dream of being able to play the NES Zelda and SNES Zelda intros at a whim. :) 3. Were the ones for the above mentioned games 8 or 10 holes? Thank you!!!!

Matthias Drake I don't own one myself, but every Ocarina player says Songbird is amazing! With the replica, I'm sure they're great, they cost 108 dollars tho. Stl Ocarina has some too! Btw, I think the original game one has 7 holes, but I'm not sure.

Also, I totally agree you HAVE to listen to the sound of each one if you can, an ocarina may look pretty but not be what you like to listen to. I drove the vendors crazy having them play each one (some twice for comparison) before I made my choice. It took like 30 mins, but was totally worth it.

I ordered my dragon tooth ocarina last night. It's the strawfired extra quiet from Songbird. I chose songbird because I have an elbow deformation that doesn't allow my ulna and radius to properly rotate giving me very little range of motion to turn my wrist. The dragon tooth seems to require the last range of motion and still sounds lovely. I liked the idea of the EQ because I like the fact that it's fairly even blow for all the holes (except the lowest notes). I'm excited!

1) How easy they are to play/master depends on yourself and how much time you want to put into it. Usually it doesn't take too long to get a feel for it, but of course it'll take time to master it much like anything else. 2) Most I've seen are tuned to the key of C, some may vary. 3) I'd definitely recommend songbird ocarinas. I've always heard good feedback about them. They have two different Zelda replicas right now I believe.

Sweet potato refers to the classic Italian shaped ocarina. ( Ocarina actually means "little goose" for the avian profile shape more commonly referred to as sweet potato nowadays.)

Just bought the Zelda Ocarina because my fiancé is addicted to the games, I figured it'd be a cute idea to learn to play for him and surprise him on our 7 year anniversary! I also got the Nightingale ocarina for a more long term one to play. It being bigger will work for my larger hands, it's sounds beautiful, and I'm not worried about portability. -3 thanks for all your videos!

Yea, I play flute and sax (amongst other things, bein a music major and all) and I had no trouble picking it up at all, just need lots of practice with playing speed on the high notes while still holding the silly thing. but it's super fun, well worth the effort I love mine!

ive made my decision , thanks, songbird and hind ocarinas are now my primary ocarina shopping websites, and I know what im going to order so thank you very much, even though this isn't my first ocarina I still thought this video taught me a lot, the one I have a a plastic manufactured one, I didn't spend too much because I wasn't sure id like the ocarina or not, but now I know I do and am going to invest a lot more money into them, thanks for the advice again

I would assume any experience playing a woodwind instrument would help, considering the Ocarina is a woodwind. If you ignore that, I would still say yes, because you're not going to have issues reading your music, keeping good time, etc unlike people who are totally new.

It's mostly just a preference. Of course, ocarinas of different materials will sound different, but it's not really a great annoyance. I suppose the biggest reason that wood is better than clay is that when it hits hard flooring, it doesn't shatter. Happened to me, really sucks losing an expensive ocarina.

Okay, this is all totally new to me! I had never HEARD of an ocarina before (aaaand...I've never seen "Zelda") I watched STL Ocarina's "Misty Mountain Cold" a moment ago. Now, I think I want one! The tenor (Zelda version) looks like the one to get. I THANK YOU, David, for this info and I will be checking out some of your other vids.

Started with a 12 hole Taiwanese style. Was not disappointed. Your videos on how to play helped me so much. One year later, I got a bass C four hole for Christmas and had to learn the whole thing all over again. XD Totally worth it, I have no regrets.

You can learn the fingering for the notes easier than the pendant because of the linear style but the actual playing is more difficult because of the number of finger holes.

That's a really tough question because there are many different ocarinas with many different characteristics, so it's more a question of what you're looking for. However, my favorite ocarina at the moment would have to be my Rotter C3 from Austria :D

I have three questions: 1) How easy are Zelda ocarinas to play/master? (Ocarina of Time replica) 2) What range is a Zelda ocarina? (I have a dog) 3) What website would you recommend to get a Zelda ocarina? (for both playing and collecting)

You know that there is something called a hand ocarina right? or bird call. you just cup your hands tightly and lightly blow above the hole between your thumb knuckles. you don't need to pay anything for it. and you can tune it by tightening your hands or making them a bit more loose. I can play all the Zelda songs on it and even envented some. :)

Well, I wanted Zelda ocarina, and I really wanted to play it (I played flute already and I love sound of ocarinas) sooo... My awesome dad bought me Ocarina of Time from Songbird Ocarina. It looks amazing, just like original, and the sound is great (7 hole crossfinger) I... I love it so much :3 I play it every day. I wake up, play some ocarina, go to school while playing ocarina, play ocarina in school, play it on my way back, play home, and when there is time, I climb tree in park and play there

although, an ocarina is only as good as the tabs you can learn for it... or your ability to recreate those sounds... either way, pattern recognition really helped me leaning the ocarina... i started on lion sleeps tonight then jumped to hedwigs theme followed by hes a pirate... now I'm working on once upon a December...
