I have viewed 10 different video to help me to understand PNF (Chop and Lift), but this was the only one that made good sense. Very clear description and informative. THANK YOU

Amazing! Here's how I understood it. Imagine the affected arm lateral to the tree you're "chopping". First, Draw the sword. Then, when the arm is flexed, cross it to the other side and "chop".

thanks! ex question: pt has L CVA and you're trying to improve function of R UE using PNF. They are at stage 4 of recovery. Why is Chop/Reverse chop both out of synergy but only Lift is out of synergy and Reverse lift is in synergy? The reverse chop seems like it would also be in synergy.

+Kelsey Zane Had the same confusing question on this one. I'm presuming you got the therapyed book because I'm looking at the same question. First thing, I think this video explains the idea ok but what I can gather to make it as simple as possible is as follows: The extremity doing the motion is doing the pattern, in UE the other is just assisting the motion D1 pattern = a chop D2 pattern = a lift As far as chop, reverse chop, just think of chopping wood. So you start with your arm above your head and come done = starting is chop = D1 flexion, end of motion is where you would start a reverse chop = D1 extension Same applies to lift, when you lift something you start with your arm down = lift = D2 extension, when you end your arm is above your head so reverse lift position = D2 flexion 2nd thing: He mentions the Lift or D2 pattern is more in synergy but I do not believe that to be correct and the therapyed book says otherwise as well. The reasoning is, do the motion yourself and notice that when you end in the D2 aka Lift pattern of the right arm, you are in the "flexion synergy position" of scapular retraction/elevation, shoulder is abducted & externally rotated, elbow is flexed, and forearm is supinated. pg 140 in therapyed 18th edition, "big book" Hope that helps and good luck on Jan 27th!

Yep, taking the exam next week and still struggling with the visualization of this but can you confirm the following logic is correct: The chop/reverse chop makes some sense (chop moves the UE into /, ABD, IR (out of synergy) and the reverse chop moves the UE into flexion, ADD, ER (out of synergy)). Not sure why it says D1E only if it's a combination of D1E and D1F. The lift (brings the pt into flexion, ABD, ER (in synergy): start with arm down at L ASIS ---> up at R shoulder. The reverse lift (brings the pt into / ADD IR (out of synergy)): start with arm up at R shoulder --> down at L ASIS. ....so you can take out that option because the whole statement is not correct. In the TherapyEd book it says it's opposite....lift (out of synergy)/reverse lift (in synergy) and that's what is confusing me. *I went through this thought process with the help of Kisner & Colby pg. 208 Maybe I'm making this harder than it needs to be but I feel like the reasoning and critical thinking skills are important.
