The Chopin correspondence is full of hints about a Third Piano Concerto that never surfaced as a complete autograph manuscript. Letters written by the composer, his father, his publishers and pupils all make mention of such a work from late 1830 until 1841. In letters to his publisher, Chopin identified the seldom-performed solo work Allegro de Concert, Op.46, which was eventually published in 1841, as the first movement of his Third Concerto, and is reported to have sent the music to a colleague in Poland saying, "This is the very first piece I shall play in my first concert upon returning home to a free Warsaw." That opportunity unfortunately never came.
The Allegro was most likely composed in the early 1830s, shortly after the two well-known concertos, in F minor and E minor. Its style and structure readily suggest its adaptability to a succession of contrasting solo and orchestral sections mandatory for a concerto of the period. Concertos were occasionally performed in part or whole as solo pieces - at Chopin's Paris debut concert in February 1832 at the Salle Pleyel, he performed the F minor concerto as a solo - and Chopin is thought to have performed the Allegro of the new concerto as a solo at a soiree given by his Paris publisher Maurice Schlesinger in 1834.
Building on these facts, Alan Kogosowski has orchestrated the Allegro de Concert - he is not the first to have done so - also filling out its formal structure with a second subject taken from the introductory section. He has employed an orchestral ensemble identical to Chopin's two published concertos, with the addition of a second trombone. For the finale, Kogosowski made a calculated and educated leap of imagination to choose the glittering Bolero in A minor/major (same key as the Allegro - an unusual one for Chopin), Op.19, which is a solo piece of the same period - 1834 - one that fits into no category, as do virtually all of Chopin's works. It has a rondo form typical of that found in the finale of a concerto, and a ready-made cadenza. It provides a fitting conclusion to a beautiful work that would otherwise have remained unperformed and hardly known.

Compared to his 1st and 2nd concertos......this is pretty heavily orchestrated which Chopin doesnt often do.....he puts more emphasis on the piano part and uses the orchestra more as an enhancer.....But still its a really good recreation

I find this piece rather charming...and the part that is not Chopin, does not worry me so much as it does other people. The melodies are Chopin's and that is ample consolation for true fans of the master's grand music for the piano.

Obviously it's basically Allegro de Concert, but with the 1st movement of his 3rd Sonata's and Grand Polonaise Brillante's themes infused. And the Bolero is not here. The ending is very much so Allego de Concert's. But it's not here, anywhere from what I can tell. If it is, it's been severely mangled lol

Aber was sollte denn eigentlich zählen?

Sensible someone can tell us who`s the real writer of this piece? Chopin did not compose more than 2 piano concertos and this is an adaptation of a work by him (perhaps by way of the melody of the piano) I would like to also tell me what is this work also. Even so, it is very worth the work done in the video.

It is an adaptation of Concert Allegro Op.46 Chopin (piano solo) by Alan Kogosowski for orchestra and piano. It is unusually accurate and beautiful, but not a piece to consider in the style of Chopin, lacking that own highly personal character that identifies each composer just listen. However it seems a very decent job although this arrangement for piano solo piece seems more interesting and offers a greater challenge in the execution.

There are four versions available - Nicode, Michael Pont, this one by Kogosowski and a new one by Ingolf Wunder on Deutsche Gramaphon. Nicode took liberties and added his own new material. Kogosowski's version is the best one in my view. Michael Ponti's recording is also good, as is Wunder's. Only Kogosowski has added a 2nd & 3rd movement by orchestrating other Chopin solo pieces - CD can be purchased on Kogosowski's website.

For me this is the 7th and 8th variation of the hexameron originally composed partially by Liszt, Czerny,Thalberg, Herz! If so, then it is not the 3rd piano concerto of Chopin, who only composed 2 of the 9 variations of the Hexameron!!

@@comet8864 What are you talking about? There is no 2-nd and 3-rd movements, besides this one was NOT written by Chopin. It just contains some music from Chopin. But Chopin would have been angry to hear this. He even asked his friend Gzymala to burn all his sketches in order not to leave behind pieces that would diminish his name. This is exactly what happens with this so called 3-rd Concerto. It spunds good in places but as a whole is very much UNDER Chopin. Most of the ideas have been taken from his Allegro de Concert. Chopin realized that was not what he wanted for a new Concerto and stopped. He did not even bother to orchestrate it. The musician who did this tried to make a name for himself. Or maybe he loves the music of Chopin so much that he wanted to bring a tribute to him by that. Still, like I said, it is UNDER Chopin and Chopin would not have been happy with this at all.
@comet8864

I understand how you feel. The concerto is not what Chopin imagined. However, all of the music is Chopin’s - the Op.46 Allegro de Concert, the Lento con gran espressione for the 2nd mvt and the Bolero Op.19 for the 3rd mvt. The conductor, Neme Jarvi, asked Alan Kogosowski to create a complete concerto by orchestrating the pieces, and he only used the notes that Chopin wrote. Yes, it’s possible that Chopin would not be pleased. However, his instructions to It just contains some music from Chopin. But Chopin would not be pleased, but his instructions were not followed, and we have music that we would not otherwise have. Chopin died young, so it’s great to have every note. Several of his pieces have been arranged, for cello, for ballet, etc. This concerto is just one more example. It’s great music even though it’s not exactly as Chopin left it. We are free to choose whether to enjoy or ignore these developments. Personally, I think it’s a way to squeeze a few last drops from Chopin’s pen.

@@antiquet3301 Chopin tried to write a new Concerto but all he managed to do was writing an Allegro de Concert opus 46. He was not happy with the result therefore he did not even bother to orchestrate it, much less to write more. So he left this Allegro opus 46 just for piano solo. What I hear in this piece is parts from that Allegro mixed with other pieces. If Chopin wanted to write a 3-rd Concerto out of that Allegro he would have done it himself. But he even asked his friend Gzymala to burn all unfinished sketches so that his name would not diminish in the eyes of public. He would not be happy to hear this. It is UNDER his standards of value. It sounds "nice" in places but most of it sounds like the music written for a soap opera.
