This 46-minute video lesson explores an in-depth look at the Prelude in D-flat major, Op.28 No.15 by Frédéric Chopin. Areas of focus include how to divide chords effectively between the hands to maximize beautiful voicing, shaping of melodic lines and creating dynamic variety between similar phrases throughout the piece, formal analysis of the piece, how to develop a soft and velvety accompaniment line to help create a bel canto effect, how to avoid vertical playing with repeated notes throughout the piece, touch, how to create long breathing lines, and many more suggestions to help you become as efficient as possible in your practice sessions.

I learned and recorded this piece a couple of years ago - one of my favorites. Maybe time to try and bring it back and improve on it - these tips will help.

This is what I call "My piece." It resonates with me.. If there's one piece that I want to play, and can play by memory it's Chopjn's Raindrop Prelude. I'd love to record it in the near future. Your tips will help a lot. Have you made any videos on Lizst's Consolation no. 3? If not, I'd love to see you make one.

Great video as always Josh! This would be a great piece to play as a prequel to Chopin’s D flat major nocturne #2 from opus 27, just a thought.

I’ve seen some people talk about leading up to a very impactful piece with a prelude (or even a nocturne depending on the song) of the same key, it seems like an intriguing concept to me.

hi josh! i hope that you see this comment, i know that this is very strange and i hope it doesn't come off as rude but i am very interested in the propractice lifetime access i really want to do the curriculum but i just wish that you had a course in it for Rachmaninoff's Op.16 No. 4, i love the Moment Musicaux in E minor and it is so pretty and if you did a video for it and added it i would definitely join in a heart beat there aren't a lot of videos online that go in depth on this piece and it is a bit frustrating so it would be wonderful if you did because youre such a great teacher !

Does it make any difference if I divide the left hand and keeping the higher voice just in the right one?

@@user-gl3ck3ix8f I'm having the same problem. The version I'm practicing is the same as Paul Barton's. I tried to Google if the first ballade has two versions but it seems like nobody's talking about it.

I said that mine is the same as Paul Barton's but our molto crescendo is different and that makes it even more confusing, I googled it too and I couldn't find anyone talked about it

There are lots of published editions, personally I use the henle edition. Chopin was known to make small adjustments to his work and because of this we see a few slightly different versions of this ballade. What I like about the Henle edition is that it outlines some of these changes and it’s more up to your interpretation as to how you want to play the piece. If you have a teacher they will have recommendations for how it should be played as well.

Funny how you can not play something for such a long time and because you go on to other more involved pieces, when you go back to another piece you play it even better than you left it.

Since I'm a piano student I don't even play this piece & have not listened to any recording of it. Even when someone messes up a certain part of it, I wouldn't even tell. I'm getting close to playing fur Elise in piano adventures. Please don't think you can't mess up.
