Welcome to Peterson Family Farm. On this KZbin channel, we plan to show viewers what happens on a real life family farm in Kansas. From working with animals, to planting seeds, to harvesting grain, to putting up hay, to fixing equipment, you'll get to see what farming is like! Our farm is a 5th generation farm started in 1882 by our great great grandparents. We grow wheat, corn, soybeans, milo, sunflowers, and forages and we feed about 1,000 head of cattle. To learn more about it, watch our channel intro video here: • Welcome to Our New You...

Kansas is a great state for farming! It's like mowing the corn like a lawn mower with a catcher for the pieces mowed that just needs dumping. Silage looks dry. Thanks for the education!!

Does anyone else have the urge to go open both doors of those trucks and grab the air compressor and blow the dust out from one side to the other? Just watching them get in makes me feel gritty LOLOLOL

Just curious. You mentioned leaving rows for insurance adjuster. If you corn did so well why do you have an insurance adjuster coming to look at it?
@petersonfamilyfarm1778
@petersonfamilyfarm1778 3 жыл бұрын
Because technically when you chop the corn you are "destroying" it before grain harvest. The insurance adjuster appraises it because of this, but we won't get any payout because it will be appraised well above the amount where we would get a payment.

Can the silage chopper tell you how many tons per Acer you are getting? Like the combine tells you the bushels per acre and the moister content.

So how many cows does 100 acres of silage feed? How long will it ferment and then how long will it last when you start using it for feed? Is it feed supplement or does it stand for 100% of the feed when it is in use?
@matthias4971
@matthias4971 3 жыл бұрын
So how many cows does 100 acres of silage feed? -> Depens on the percentage in the ratio but around 100 cows (including the heifers and bulls of those cows) How long will it ferment and then how long will it last when you start using it for feed? -> Takes 6 weeks to ferment and when you open it you should be feeding the part that is around oxygen within 2 days. Is it feed supplement or does it stand for 100% of the feed when it is in use? -> It is about 40-50% of the ratio in cow feed

Peterson farm Bros could you explain the reason for putting sides on your truck to chop corn?
@petersonfamilyfarm1778
@petersonfamilyfarm1778 3 жыл бұрын
It gives the chopper more space to blow into the truck! Plus, you can fill it up a little more.

I have to laugh when I hear people from America say “ we haven’t had rain 3 weeks “ and I think to myself how would they go here in Australia not having rain for 3 years in some parts of the country
@petersonfamilyfarm1778
@petersonfamilyfarm1778 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but when your operation depends on the "normal" amount of rain to be profitable, 3 weeks hurts a lot worse than in places like Australia where they are used to longer droughts and less rainfall. The "severity" of a 3 week dry spell is different everywhere you go. In Kansas we went from 100% of our yield expectations to maybe 40-50%. In Australia it would've hardly budged in 3 weeks based on expectations. I'm not saying the droughts in Australia aren't severe or heartbreaking, but to laugh at Americans because they've lost half their crop in 3 weeks isn't really fair. Australia plants lower populations, more drought tolerant crops, and their businesses are better set up to have extremely low yields and rainfalls. etc. Kansas can raise 150 bu corn but it may drop down to 50 if there's a dry spell. It just doesn't work to compare weather in different places in the world.
