Video from a Mercer County Ohio dairy farm as they harvest their 2019 corn silage crop. This year they got to demo a new John Deere 8300 forage harvester with a 676 header.

Great video Mike! A farmer-sized chopper like this is really rare especially in Colorado where I live. Pretty much all custom operators runnning biggest machines they can buy out here.

Gabe Bruggeman....I grew up on Hone-Weir Road, it’s about halfwayish between the NW corner of the lake and the state line. My grandparents lived on Elm Street in Celina, and everyone pretty much worked at Reynolds & Reynolds. It’s a small world after all.

Great video Mike for the night effect from the drone.Just watch out for the power lines lol. Curious why they did not weight the 8260R for packing. Driver seems a bit new to working a silage bunker.

And shed roofs, parked tractors, windrows, bins/silos, trees and the drop from the bed of a pickup...
@SlipShodBob5 жыл бұрын
@Ridin' Green it may have been where it was crossing it where the sides were steeper than the face of the bunk as there were several times it looked to be struggling for traction to get up the sides where weights on the 3pt linkage would either ground out more easily or just make it harder ultimately it looked to be there basically to keep the sides tight where the other 2 were compacting it more
@ohiodairyfarming63825 жыл бұрын
yes that was his first time ever doing that and we put fluid in the tires
@ohiodairyfarming63825 жыл бұрын
Ridin' Green ya i was the kid driving the 8260R but i was teaching someone else how to go up and down the pile so i could go and do some feeding and the reason for not as much weight is when we bought the tractor brand new we didn’t order 3point arms because we never thought we would need them and we would like more front weights but don’t have anymore need to buy some but the fluid in the tires does a very good job getting all of the oxygen out of the silage

What all is silage used for? Wikipedia tells you the many different kinds of silage but doesn't really explain what types of operations use it and why. I see lots of dairy use corn silage and finishing operations but can silage be used for cows diet from young to market?
@leesteele92905 жыл бұрын
That roller,packer , weight on the one pusher is something new to me ,is it specifically for silage or is it a roller that's really intended for something else? Something about silage harvest that's kinda romantic to watch SOMEONE ELSE do! Thanks for the video!!
@ohiodairyfarming63825 жыл бұрын
Lee Steele it is made just for silage their someone near us that builds them and it is a frame then their are 9 train wheels on the bracket that role on the silage

This silage stuff is fascinating. This is just for animal feed, no corn cobs/kernals are in this crop??
@MotoKeto5 жыл бұрын
The cob and corn kernals are all chopped together and fed to the cattle.
@nycsox9875 жыл бұрын
@@MotoKeto thanks for your reply. The scale of it all is just amazing 👌.

Learned the other day, that they want the kernel to be chopped up a bit. If whole it's less likely the cow will digest it as completely.

I think that is the same chopper that the local dealership (KFG Archbold) had on display all spring and summer before it made it way down your way.
@ohiodairyfarming63825 жыл бұрын
john beldon yes probably KFG just got it in and had it on demo because no one around us knows what it can handle or how it runs
@johnbeldon6355 жыл бұрын
Ohio Dairy Farming I know the Archbold store had one sitting out on the front yard for a long time this summer. Now they have a 7000 series tractor with a Kuhn spreader and a pay loader sitting there. Which part of Ohio are you from?

What happens if there’s a massive oil leak on the tractor while it’s on top of the silage pile?
@mikespecht5 жыл бұрын
Then the cattle poop a lil easier when they eat that part of the pile.
@2of2DCH5 жыл бұрын
Wondered the same myself.
@farmhandmike5 жыл бұрын
You just hope that don't happen but if it does the silage in that area would be removed.

Well, 6 rows is not that much?
@ohiodairyfarming63825 жыл бұрын
MrPummi88 More than you would think 6 rows of 12 foot tall corn at a time is a lot for a machine to handle and you must remember we aren’t big factory farms we are a family owned farm milked 235 cows not 2500 cows were they need 10 times more feed than us so they need the 9300 chopper instead of this one which is a lot smaller
@MrPummi885 жыл бұрын
@@ohiodairyfarming6382 In Germany 10-12 rows are standard, thats why I am asking. No Problem, usually USA is bigger and better ;)
@ohiodairyfarming63825 жыл бұрын
MrPummi88 yes their are some farms that run 12 row headers and costume harvesters but not a whole lot of farms have them
