Been dairy farming in Northwest Illinois for the last 45 years. The changes in chopping corn silage is absolutely amazing. We were one of the first in our area to have a 2 row head on our chopper. Now one of the custom cutters in our area has one that chops 12 rows .

Farming Fixing and Fabricating, on KZbin,has many in depth videos on how a chopper works, including the processor, and all the maintenance that goes into it. Great drone work Trevor!!

The head is a kemper style head that allows you to run on any row spacing. You can harvest 30”,36”,38”,and 40” row springs without changing attachments. Before they developed them you had a different head for each row spacing. The kernel processor is designed to crack all the corn kernels to allow for better digestion in the cow’s gut. Uncracked corn goes right through them and out into to manure! The kernel is where the majorly of the feed value in corn silage is. The stalk,cob, and ears are mainly filler in the cow’s diet.

Trevor in Kansas we call them Turn rows. With no flood irrigation we plant 2 times around a field and that is called the turn rows. We enjoyed meeting you in February when we was down there. We have a YT channel that our daughter runs and. We just had or chopping video on at Double G & L Farms Thanks for the good video Wayne

In the Midwest, farmers plant end rows around the fields so they have room to turn. They are harvested first. After harvest, when the fields are tilled, that same turning area are generally referred to as headlands.

@BalesHayFarmandRanch My best friend does a little baling with a allis chalmers wire tie baler from the late 60s early 70s. All the balers around here I believe are 2 string not like your 3 string.

He needs a bigger head for that chopper. I worked for a custom operator that had 2 choppers. They had a 10 row and a 12 row head. Also, today's corn has the potential to produce 7 ears per stalk in perfect growing conditions and fertility. Everything that happens from planting takes away from that.
@BalesHayFarmandRanch Жыл бұрын
I’m sure if he needed it, he would have it. I’m not sure why he doesn’t have a bigger one. He commented on the video. Slayde Viss. Ask him in the comments. I’m sure he’ll answer.

Why only a 8 row head 🤔? In South Dakota we run 12 row heads

It has something to do with the irrigation borders I think.
