I remember growing up one of the boys oldman had a scrapyard and we'd batch the old escorts and other cars from the 70's early 80's up and get them running to race around the old quarry nothing like the standard of your work but watching you does take me back some of the rough welding patch up jobs is more like the kind of thing we'd do basically just enough to keep the cars together before they finally gave up the ghost . I only recently discovered your channel and I'm working my way through the play lists I find your videos help me unwind they're mega relaxing although some of the music on some is a bit dancie but in this particular series you've nailed it 👍

Per usual Steve, you're just consecutively nailing it, extremely satisfying watching you shape those cowling pieces with the shrinker/stretcher. Not the strongest factory rockers I've ever seen, most cars have a dimpled panel between floors & outer rocker skin for more rigidity, but it makes sense why these Escort's are so light and quick, there's barely enough steel there to legally comprise a car to begin with! 😁 But that's how these lightweight RWD cars were built and why they're still so competitive even against Lancer Evo's and the like in various rally disciplines, despite RWD being allegedly "inferior". Normally I wouldn't have touched those rockers and floors despite sub-optimal repairs, in terms of rust they aren't that bad. Of course this being a RS and in an effort to keep the value, it will have to be top notch bodyshell, and I don't mind saying it came to the right place in that respect! 👌

Great work again Steve, those radial wire brushes for grinders are a godsend for cleaning/prepping metal, you mentioned at the end about how cold it was, the farmer I do jobs for buys/sells machinery and has just picked up various (gas, diesel, electric) space heaters if you're after one.

Depends on width, I have a 330x10mm one, those tiny belts suffers from durability issues and I've tried a few brands. 3M seems to be making the best ones from what I've seen on videos, but I haven't tried them yet.

Cracking job guys! What I was wondering... this body has supposedly been sandblasted and epoxy primered, but everywhere you work there is still paint under the epoxy coating. Most have been a crappy blasting job, or did they just do the rusty spots?

I have yet another customers RS out in the yard with the interior rammed full of replacement panels Steve. Highly doubt I will get to it this side of Christmas as I'm buried repairing a rusty Fiat 110-90 tractor cab that came in plus the usual queue of Transporters. Getting back to repairing cars & vans will be like a holiday compared to this Fiat tractor cab - everything on it is heavy gauge steel, an absolute sod to form, plus the shapes required are more complex than anything you'd meet on a car. Nobody wanted to touch this cab so I said I would. I now know why they all ran a mile. :-) Every day i am at it I curse, because repairing tractor stuff pays rubbish compared to repairing cars - I'm quietly losing my azz on this one. Next tractor cab someone wants fixed, it's car rates or go take it elsewhere. Other chap here has 3 vans done & gone in the time I have buried into this Fiat - he just smirks as he walks past - "Told you so".... I did all the welding on a T4 he couldn't manage as it was dead tricky, in a short break from the Fiat - couple of hours max - those few hours paid better than a week of tractor welding & were an absolute doddle by comparison - he's a good welder, I'm just so long at it I can weld a cat to a dog at this stage. Lesson learnt. Avoid tractors or charge properly.

Why don't they invest in a spot welder?
@idrisddraig2

I think because plug welds are not just stronger, you can put them in places where you would no longer have any acess with a spot welder (too manty things in the way).

@@idrisddraig2Ford managed it, but yeah restoring a car would not necessarily follow the same order or assembly. BTW you can get spot welders that spot from a single side
@cg7975
@cg7975 6 ай бұрын
@@idrisddraig2Plug welds should be done in one visit. They should be almost level and require very little finishing with a polishing disc. To plug weld properly with a MIG requires a high level of skill and the welder to be carefully set up. The welding in this video is only mediocre, and that's being polite.

They seam welded them yes to make the shells stiffer. Seam welding means you weld all the spot welded seams by an inch of weld and the an inch gap, then another weld and so on
