Choppy playback final cut pro 11

I figured out what the issue is -- and fixed it ! For me this was happening for a project that was created in FCP X, then auto converted for FCP 11 when I upgraded FCP. During playback it would skip and drop frames. Turns out the issue is with the cache. Delete all your old cache/generated files created in fcp X. Highlight the project. Then go to File --> Delete Generated Library Files. Select everything and delete. Now when you go back to the project and start playing it will rebuild the generated files in FCP 11 - may take a minute or two. After that playback is butter smooth !

have the same issue with compound clips and added effects. no issues before and now it is laggy. sometimes get the beach ball indefinitely for just pressing play. so frustrating since I'm near the end of this edit and now it seems the final tweaks are going to take the longest

Mac Mini m2 pro /32 GB here. Playback performance has nosedived after the 11.0 update. I am hating myself for doing the upgrade. Newer is not necessarily better. Used to be butter smooth before while playing at full res 4k - no proxy files. Now it;s all choppy and jerkey. Urrrgghhh !! I hate this.
