Lovely looking video Terry... and lovely looking uke. One thing.... (I'm known for being pedantic!) What follows is wholly over the top nitpicking, and doesn't detract from a great video. But hey ho.... That 7th... the note: D You're obviously correct that were we using the chord in the context of the key of E major, that D would be the flat 7th degree of the scale. However, although it is used in a whole range of situations the E7 chord is most commonly to be found in the role of the dominant chord in the key of A major or A minor. Indeed - that's the context in which you demonstrated it - in the context of a turn around in the blues in A. As used in your blues turnaround demonstration the chord is actually constructed with the root note on the 5th degree of the A major scale - the E.: Root of E7 = 5th Degree of A Major = E 3rd of E7 = 7th Degree of A Major = G# 5th of E7 = 2nd Degree of A Major = B 7th of E7 = 4th Degree of A Major = D The 7th note of the chord is the 4th degree of the key and isn't flat at all. That 7th note in the chord gives the familiar and satisfying resolution when followed by the A major chord; the 4th degree falling as it does by one semitone to the lovely 3rd degree of the scale (I find it so satisfying that these first position chords are constructed to obey the classical rules of harmony in this way). One might almost say the progression is perfect (see what I did there?). If using the chord in the context of a piece in the key of E major your description would of course be completely correct. I guess the point is that the notes used in a particular chord depend on the key in which the piece is. Is that G# actually an Ab? It depends what key we're in. A safer way to describe the chord might be to say that the D is a minor 7th above the root, and that when we refer to 7th chords we are talking about chords which feature that minor 7th interval.

First of all, wow. Thank you for the perceptive and complete comment. You are correct with what you are saying, that the E7 is the dominant 5th chord in the key of A, and if you were using the A Major scale you would not have to flat the D, since D is not sharp in the key of A. And yes I did use this E7 as the dominant chord in the Blues turnaround I played which was in the key of A. Music is amazing because there are so many ways to look at something. For example a Aminor7 chord (A - C - E - G) could also be called a C6 chord (C - E - G - A). So it does depend on the content. My reasoning, for relating the E7 chord to the E major scale is because it's a universal approach. I think if your doing a Blues in E (E7, A7 and B7 chords), trying to relate the E7 to the A Major scale may be hard to grasp for those not too familiar with music theory. Thanks again, you got me thinking.

Hello! When I play e7, there is no sound coming out of the 4th string of the 1st fret. Any tips?

When holding the chord make sure that you are playing on your fingertip, not the pad of your finger. Also, make sure you are pressing down right next to the fret but not on top of the fret. Also check to see if your finger, the 2nd finger which should be on the 3rd string is not touching the fourth string.
