That first Badlands album is So. Good. I find myself *constantly* stealing, er... "borrowing" from it in my playing.

Jake is da man! I saw him twice when he was playing with Ozzy. I was a big fan of Badlands but never got to see them. It's really a tragedy that Ray's messy life has kept the Badlands albums from being available (the story is out there, I won't cover it here.)

I stumbled across the Voodoo Highway album at a pawn shop around 2003-04. I’d only been playing since 2001. I didn’t even know about Badlands, but I knew about Jake. That album is fantastic and it’s my favorite music and playing of his career. Jake doesn’t get the props he deserves. He and Randy are the best Ozzy ever had in his solo career.

Funny and true story! Back in the mid-90’s, I was in a Kiss tribute band playing Ace at a large Kiss convention. Both Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer were there with their new band (post Revenge) since Ace and Peter rejoined Kiss. Their band actually went on before our Kiss tribute, so pretty weird having former members of Kiss “opening” for you! Anyway, being a huge Badlands fan, I told Eric how much I loved the album - particularly his drumming on Hard Driver. However, Eric had no interest at all in talking about Badlands. Funny, as it turns out, he ended up being in THE “Kiss tribute band” playing Peter! Kiss without the original guys pretty much feels like a tribute band to me! It’s sad Eric didn’t have fond recollections from Badlands because he played some kickass drums! At least it was his playing and not just being a Kiss karioke drummer! Bruce Kulick was very gracious - during the solo to Parasite he gave me a thumbs up!

The riff to Devil’s Stomp is absolutely killer. Good finger workout and awesome sounding metal riff. Solo to Rumblin’ Train is my favorite solo of all time... perfect marriage of technique and raw feel.

Oh hell yeah! Badlands is the greatest! Saw them twice live touring for their first two albums. Jake is a MONSTER and seeing him live in a club on both of those club shows standing right in front of me was astounding, he blew me away both times. Incredible player and a super nice guy. Thanks David, totally awesome upload! 🤘🏼🎸

I saw Badlands at a hole in the wall club near my hometown. Jake and all the band members signed my tab book for the first album and I taped Jake’s pick to the inside cover. Still have it.

Dude, Badlands was so awesome, and Ray Gillan f-ed any chance of getting that great music re-released! They played in my college town of Richmond, KY, when I was at Eastern Kentucky University. Dreams in the Dark was a jam! I'm glad you could find enough material to do this lesson! Jake got hosed with the music in this band. Some of his best playing! Great lesson, Dave! Jake belongs to be at the top of the best guitarist list

Great choice for a lesson, Dave… I’ve been stealing and recycling licks from these albums for nearly 30 years. And I’m not ashamed! The reasoning behind them being unavailable is pretty messed up, but hopefully one day they’ll get it all straightened out and people will be able to buy them again.

I have held on to the debut CD and Voodoo Highway for dear life since the early '90s. And I'm glad I did, since they were already out of print ( I believe ) even back in that time-frame!

Great lesson. Jake is an underrated rhythm player. And fun fact, for those who want to jam out the entire "Last Time" track the solo section includes one of the licks Dave taught in his 3 Jake E Lee Licks From 1984. Check out the "speed lick and thank me later.

I started going through some Badlands the other day. I was surprised at how simple the riffs were, yet how great they sound. Rumbling Train or Dancing on the Edge; super simple, but its all in the dynamics.

Jake's riffs with Badlands reminds me a lot of Tommy Bolin on Deep Purple's Come Taste the Band. Those flat 5 riffs were all over 80s metal, Dokken for instance. But that riff reminds me of the Scorpions on Blackout or Lovedrive. Classic 70s blues rock in the 80s!

Love Jake, my favorite of all the Ozzy guitarists. I have to disagree with your interpretation of Dreams in the Dark, though. He stays in 7th position during the verse riff, hitting the double stops on the 9th fret A and D strings and the 7th fret on the D and G strings instead of playing the full B and D chords further down the neck. You also add an extra two beats, where he hits each of the double stops once, and then uses vibrato on the second double stop. Also, every second time through the verse riff, he drops down and hits an open A chord real quick after the last double stop. You can hear it in the studio recording if you're listening for it. I'm pretty sure he also adds a third note on 9th fret of the G string while he plays the first two double stops in the riff. Check out a video called Badlands-Rehearsal-Dreams In The Dark, where you can see him staying in 7th position except when he drops down to hit the A chord every second time.
