These "metal" scales for some reason make me laugh...they are such comical cliches...like...for angry pre-pubescent boys.

Johnny Marr was 23 years old when The Smiths broke up! Amazing player and writer. I saw him live, inspiring. I learn his songs when I'm bored at shred .

If Marr wasn't so good I would hate The Smiths. The rest of the band just as so little going for it in comparison, at least for my tastes. I know they fit in great with that post punk/goth scene. But the only band I really liked to come from that scene was Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Morrissey is pure genius and one of the best lyricist and singer of all time. Andy Rourke was a badass bass player. Mike Joyce was a great drummer. The Smiths are simply amazing. For ever.🔝🎉🎉

@basscovers-guitarcovers-my9597 Morrissey just bores me and the lyrics feel like they were written for spoken word.

The capo on the 2nd fret was to work with Morrisey's natural vocal key. If I remember correctly, he started with the capo then later moved to tuning his guitars down (I could be wrong on this).

Chad Atkins pieces sound better on a hollow body Gretsch I have one and I even play some of his music. I’ve been playing guitar for 51 years started in 19 7471 years old and still play today. It’s a beautiful style. I even play Hotel California and stairway to Heaven Style guitar no singing all instrumental. Both of them are beautiful pieces of music played that way. Have a great day.👍👍😄🎸

One of the best guitar players there ever was was Chad Atkins. This guy was awesome. He could play anything. Also he was a beautiful person. I really love Chad Adkins. He’s one hell of a guitar player and one cool guy.😄😎👍🎸

Brilliant stuff ! Thanks for posting this. I`m a Manc...grew up with the Smiths in my teens, and as a guitarist, Marr is a favourite. Got to say though, Morrissey, although hated by many for his views...needs to be mentioned IN LARGE CAPITAL LETTERS. Amazing lyricist and vocals, complete enigma. I`d recommend you listen to all his solo stuff also. Again, massive thanks for this, I love all your vids, how you get the tones out of that old amp is amazing. I`ve still got your Satriani vids on constant repeat !! Thanks man :)

What the actual f did you just play there until 3:10?!??! Yeah, walking bass jazz progressions with extended chords and probably substitutions. Got that, I guess. But why the hell did you hide THESE amazing skills from us for so long??? :D You are still able to suprise me consequently! Such a humble player and guy! Holding back his playing to be a non-discouraging teacher! ;) I think, I've just decoded you! Hahaha! ;-P Cheers from Germany, man! Keep it up! Markus

My favorite least known guitarists are Poppa Chubby, Tim Pierce and last but not least, David Brewster!! It’s AMAZING how David can sound just like any artist he is analyzing!! Not many have that gift!! Great demo of Johnny Winter!!

exatcly! i wish the pentatonics were taught like a 5 notes arpeggio rather than a scale, because its how it really functions over the chords, its different from how scales function because of the half steps, pentatonics are all about the chord progression, more harmonic, homophonic oriented, while scales are more about the characteristical notes of a mode, is a more melodic/contrapuntal approach

I came to the Smiths a bit later in life too and was blown away once i 'got' them, they would infiltrate my dreams. Johnny is an exceptionally creative guitarist with some bastard hard guitar parts that demonstrate it's not all about shredding.

Cool episode about a guitarist not a lot of people talk about, David. In a similar vein, a Chordplay about Killing Joke's Geordie Walker would be very interesting, in my opinion.

What a fab lesson, Dave. Thank you for highlighting one of my fave guitarists. Interesting to hear your take on someone you are not familiar with. Johnny Marr is an extraordinary talent imo and seems such a cool and humble guy in interviews. Maybe a lesson 2 somewhere down the road?

Yes! Been a fan of the Smiths since the beginning. Marr is amazing and you're right, weird. There's definitively a jazz influence to his sytle. Don't know if it's true or not, but I heard the "effects" that Johnny used on How Soon is Now weren't effect pedals, but something he did with his amp. A way that he turned the dials and flipped the switches to make that echo/reverb/delay sound happen. Maybe someone else knows more than I do about it. Try giving Mr. Marr a call?😂

Thanks for another great episode. This one was long overdue indeed, Johnny Marr is fantastic. In a recent Questlove Supreme podcast he explained he found his playing style by working to sound different from punk/blues/rock, like many other post-punk bands in the UK at the time.
