One of the coolest ambient guitar tricks I learned was from Steve Hillage. He used a wah pedal, overdrive and delay, maybe some flange. He uses the wah as a filter, slowly cranking the wah back and forth. It creates a sound like an analog synth with the filter slowly opening and closing. I actually did think it was synth for a long time, but then finally realized what he was actually doing. there's so much that can be done with ambient guitar with very little gear. Even just overdrive, delay and a volume pedal can do a *ton*

Interesting. I gravitate towards plainsong/psalm tones such as Dies Irae, Pange Lingua, or Tallis' 3rd psalm tune (the inspiration for Ralph Vaughn Williams' Variations)

I've tried this before with a couple of old folk tunes, but I didn't consider how the structure of some originals will lend themselves better to Frippertronics than others. I have fallen into the muddy chord trap many times. It took me a while to simplify the chords. As for variations, I wonder if it would also work using chord inversions? All food for thought and experimentation. A great tutorial, Bill. Thanks!
