A friend once described the different modulation tones this way: Chorus takes your guitar under water, Phase takes your guitar into space, and Flange is the rocket that gets it there.

Flanging, chorus, and doubling are on a continuum; overlapping a bit in terms of the range of delay times that they modulate. What changes as the delay ranges are shifted is what we pay attention to. In the case of flanging, the much shorter delay times result in peaks and notches that can gradually cover the spectrum. To enhance the perceptibility of those moving peaks and notches, we sweep the flanger slowly, and sometimes add some feedback to accentuate the peaks and notches. Of course, sweeping slowly means that the very subtle pitch shift becomes imperceptible. In the case of chorus, the delay range used covers the spectrum with notches and peaks. They do move around, but there is never really a part of the spectrum *without* such changes, as is the case when a flanger starts its sweep from up high. So, rather than paying attention to peaks and notches, we pay attention to the pitch differences. People usually run chorus pedals a little faster than flangers, which makes the subtle pitch changes more perceptible. What's the difference between chorus and "doubling "? When we have a "chorus ", all the musicians are attempting to play/sing the same thing at the same time, from a score (and maybe conductor) they follow. If they had perfect pitch and timing, it would just sound like one individual, except louder. But some are a little flat, some a little bit sharp, creating a thickening. In the case of what we call "doubling ", this generally involves a musician listening to playback and *copying* what they hear. You still get the slight variations in pitch, but more importantly the musician is relying on *listening* to the track, as opposed to following a score. That action inserts a slightly longer delay between original and copy than is the case with chorus. That delay is sufficient to impart a different character. Most analog chorus and flanger pedals can be converted from the one to the other via a simple component-value change. Beside the delay chip will usually be the clock-generator chip. And snuggled up beside that will be a small-value (usually ceramic) capacitor; say around 39-220 picofarads, depending on the brand/model. Making the capacitor value smaller (e.g., reducing 82pf down to 47pf) will shorten the delay time, and making it larger (e.g., from 82 up to 180pf) will increase the range of delay time. I like to insert a 3-position toggle to have three different delay ranges for different flavours of chorus or flange. The caveat is to a) know what you're doing before attempting such a mod, and b) not aim for a much longer delay range, since the pedals filtering might not keep enough of a lid on the clock noise.

I love chorus. Juan Valdivia of Spanish band Héroes del Silencio was my inspiration to begin using the effect. I'd love to see a multiband chorus pedal on the market, kind of like what Boss did with the Hi-band Flanger. It would be great to have a chorus that can warble heavily on low E and A strings, but be less dramatic on the high E and B.

monkey dangus Jeff Beck, Lindsay Buckingham, Mark Knoppler, Ritchie Kotzen... I could go on. Many of the finest players of the rock and roll era play exclusively with their fingers. I remember the more expensive early eighties televisions had this stereo effect where one signal w@s slightly delayed, giving a stereo effect. These were giant televisions, not necessarily large screens, but very fat. They were considered quite state of athe art then, kind of like a flange effect. Nowadays just plug normal headphones in any device and you get a realistic 5.1 surround effect, how times have changed£&£@#@343

I read somewhere the very inexpensive Mooer E-Lady is one of the most sought-after flanger pedals out there and actually is better than almost every other flanger. Is this some BS?
@anttik57646 жыл бұрын
David RF Atleast Bjorn Riis (he has the biggest David Gilmour tone site on the internet, called Gilmourish) As I recall says that the E-Lady is one of the best flangers, taking into account the price. It actually beats many flangers twice or thrice it's price. It is out of production because of some copyright stuff, but mooer has a new version out called the "Elec-Lady". As far as I know, it's the same effect.

I have one and I must say it is in fact very nice. Come very close to the Electric Mistress sounds that you hear from David Gilmour.
@LeviBulger6 жыл бұрын
It's not among the best of the best, but it definitely does an electric mistress better than most newer EHX mistresses. The only issues are that it can be noisy and doesn't get along with some pedals. But fir the price, definitely better than a big chunk of flangers out there. The BF2 is a damn good pedal too.
