In my experience, as far as you get close to them the more they submit to you. Very loyal dog..

I was lucky enough to have a chow chow as a kid. He was the masked red version; name was Tuffy. I'm 39 now; and that is still the best dog I ever had.

Chows are beautiful dogs. They always are alert at night and will keep an eye on you from their best vantage point to make sure you and the yard are safe. They are stubborn so dont attempt to make them do something unless it is on their terms. The low growl is your guide not to press the issue.

I had a male and and a female growing up they both were very territorial and would kill another dog over me or their yard. My female wouldn't let the exterminator out of his truck unless he fed her a little Debbie oatmeal cake. I miss them both

The most important fact to always remember when raising a Chow is: they never forgive and they never forget. You should never raise your voice or ever hit your Chow.
