As a Turkish, I am amazed by Sheila's comprehension of Kangal's. It is heartwarming. Kangals are indeed exceptional dogs. The area they come from is a small town called Kangal in a city called Sivas. Which has a freezing weather in the winter. And the people in that city, in the villages are immensely proud of them. They symbolize the hardship and the community aspect of those hardworking people.

30 years ago in New Zealand I was deployed overseas. When I came home my wife told me that while I was away our Kangal who I called Zack fought off a burglar who was trying to climb into our house through a window. The next morning she found Zack playing with a blood covered piece of denim. The burglar escape, but not before Zack had a piece of him.

I had a Kangal. Or, He had me. I lived in the south of france. He just walked in to my house one day, and stayed. He had escaped from being kept on a rope by a hunter, who was unhappy with him as he wasn't a good hunters dog. They are really useless hunters dogs, because they will not stay back. They see a threat, they deal with it. He was skinny, his tail was bald and broken. After 6 months he was the most beautiful example I ever saw. He could love like no other dog I had ever had. He would climb on to my lap if I was on the sofa, or walk on to my bed and just collapse on me with a big sigh. I have had many dogs in my life, but Radja, my Kangal was the most wonderful experience I ever had.

i remember when i was a child, my grandad's kangal has fought off a bear one night. I was around 6 or 7, we were visiting grandparents farm house during summer. My granddad had this huge apple orchard with some pear trees in it just next to the house. During early night time when we were playing hide and seek around the house with our cousins and other children, i heard something in the trees. I got close to see if any of the kids hiding there, first i couldnt see what it was because of the darkness. when the moment i realised something huge was in between the trees shaking them, our kangal ran passed me with an amazing speed and charged to the bear. It was like an instant, and bear was 30-40 meters away from me. My dad, uncle and grandpa came running when they heard the dog barking. Dog fought with the bear and bear ran off eventually. He was badly injured from the encounter, but my grandad took care of him and he survived. He became a hero for me after that. Rest in peace Çomar, i miss grandpa and you dearly.

My neighbor had a kangal in Ankara, Turkiye. When I was at his house gate the first time, he said to his dog pointing me "friend" once, and the dog returned to his kennel. Never barked even once. Then one day he pointed a street cat with his finger and said "friend". Later, I saw that cat feeding from the dog's plate while it was watching calmly half a meter away...

The old dog this is so true. In my village in Turkey, Giresun we had an old folk who would just wander with us as we walked through the hazelnut trees which are common in Giresun. They would keep us company even tho they are not ours at all. We could give them some bread and stuff and they would stay infront of our house for like a week or 2-3 days, then go wanderinga again. Its nice to have a company of a dog that is twice my height when its standing. And especially when i was little, i was pretty small that i could ride em like a horse if i tried to lol they were so sweet.

My grandad has a farm in Bursa, Turkey. It was a good 30 minute walk from the closest village but when we were little and wanted snacks and stuff we would walk to it. I remember one time me and my two cousins were heading back from the village late so it was pretty dark. Just when we left the outskirts of the village we started getting surrounded by 3 or 4 street dogs who wanted what was in our bags and seen we were small so thought it was easy pickings. Out of nowhere my grandad's kangal Rambo started chasing them all away then immediately ran back up and inspected us one by one. He must have followed us from the farm to the village in the morning when we left and waited for us to leave the village all day. Cried my eyes out when he passed.

I asked the reason and I was told he tried to protect the child of the house against several other dogs around five. Killed one of them, but others hurt him real bad, but drew attention on him and saved the kid. Vet. stitched him up. It was a big badass intimitading male but was very friendly to people. @@waynv1835 I cannot say anything about the Caucasian Shepherd, but as a Turk, what I will say about Kangal and Malakli is a fixed opinion. Turkish shepherd dogs are extremely loyal, brave, protective but difficult to train because they value freedom very much, they are not pets, they are part of the family. If you gain the trust of the Kangal or other Turkish shepherd dogs, they will protect you to the death and have a very serious character. In Turkey, people in the countryside respect Kangal dogs very much and consider them as a friend, a part of the family.

We have a big mixed dog. There’s a lot of guesses for what he is, one is Kangal/lab mix. A Rottweiler attacked my sister & our dog broke off a steel wire like it wasn’t even there, charged the Rottweiler, & as a 100lb puppy, sat down on the Rottweiler, held him to the ground, and protected my sister. We have big coyote/wolf/wild dog hybrids. He has scared them off our property, he is gentle with our hens & protects them from raccoons & possums. He’ll circle behind small kids and herd them to adults. He’s scared off a burglar too. Really appreciate him.

They were hardly known here in Alberta until recently but in recent years along with Pyrenees and Merema, Kangals have become very popular for guarding cattle as well as sheep. My experience is they are perfect for people who want livestock protection without a dog that is hostile to visitors. But they can be unerving to people not used to dogs and particularly LGDs. They are more cat like and their cues can be confusing. Here in the Alberta bush they are capable of holding their own against Black Bears and Cougars. They also kill coyotes. I find a good pairing is with a smaller and speedier breed as a companion. The smaller dog will bait a young coyote to chase it and then run towards the Kangal who will instinctively kill the coyote. Not only are they good around people but they have a natural drive to socialize with livestock. They will greet cattle to gain their trust. A good Kangal will pair with the cattle to defend the calves. The lower ranking cows will encircled calves acting as a wall against a predator while the dominant matriarchs and bull will work with the dog to chase away or even attempt to kill a threat. But most of the time they play with calves.

I’ve had an Anatolian Shepherd for the past 10 years. She is the best dog I’ve ever owned. She has guarded domestic goats, exotic goats, deer & chickens. She’s retired now & guards me! She went from being out guarding livestock to living inside with me & my family. We live on a ranch but she doesn’t mind being a house dog either. ❤️

She knows a lot about Kangals. When a Kangal is around you it does not have to put his pawns on your shoulder and look in to your eyes you will feel that Kangal is a very different type of being with extreme intelligence and personality. When you spend sometime with a Kangal you would understand what she is talking about. Kangals are different in a way that it is hard to describe you need to experience it yourself by spending some time with them. You would feel that they are almost like wise calm human beings with extreme intelligence.

Great dogs...my parents actually got a similar dog in western Afghanistan in the mid 70s. Bought him as a pup from sheppards. Ears and tails had been cropped. Not as tall as a kangal but wider and weighed almost 170 pounds when it reached maturity. I believe it was a mix...possibly armenian gampr, kangal or alabai. Amazing dog and never understood why not more popular in the US given livestock predation.

I understand it was completely my fault and after giving it a goats leg bone to chew on in the presence of my brother in law we became friends again. I was sad to hear that it passed away at about 1 and a half years old due to stomach issues.

He stood on his two feet and tried to overthrow me, so he showed me strength, but I stood firm and did not fall. never bited me. Have a 2 Y.O. boy, and he's an incredible friend and guardian. He loves people, particularly children. He works hard at getting along with every other dog he comes in contact with. However, he has a violence of action I've never seen in a dog, and unfortunately if another big dog shows aggression towards him or one of us, he goes into a rage. Our acreage and close neighborhood are his territory, and he protects it. Coyotes, fox, racoons etc... are killed whenever he can get ahold of them and Hawks, Falcons and Eagles don't bother anymore because the barnyard animals are his flock. However, he was an absolute tyrant with needle sharp teeth as a young pup, knowing precisely what to do to solicit the most attention and interaction. He's still very playful and likes to bite when playing, knowing just how much he can get by with. The 18-month-old Granddaughter is the apple of his eye, watching her with Lazor focus and intensity, trying to play but frequently ends up lying next to her wherever she lands and sleeping at the foot of the crib. Children in the neighbor come out to see him sometimes when we walk, and it makes his day.

How Sheila Reed explained these wonderful and majestic animals was not only moving but to a fine tee, putting a lump in my throat. Where livestock and farm/ranch guarding dog, and everything else that belongs to the property is concerned, pound for pound, the Turkish Kangal would be second to none in the canine world imo. Having the strongest bite force of around 750 + psi sitting in the number one position along with agility, athleticism, endurance along with a host of other advantages that suit their working needs makes them one of the best breeds in the world. The added bonus with these amazing animals is their ability to distinguish women and children are not seen as threats, but are in need of protection in normal or general circumstances and their ability to become gentle and "unseen" extended members of the family when not on duty. How I wish I had a property big enough to have the joy of owning a few of these beautiful animals.

There was a stray Kangal in my neighbourhood when i was a kid. She would always follow me around, circle around me when i was walking to my school. I didn’t really understand what she was doing when i was little but i get it now. She was defending me from the other “stranger” dogs from other neighbourhoods i pass through.

Off property he loves all but drunk big men. He has never bitten anyone but has showed his teeth. He loves me and wants to be my side 24/7. I don't need a leash to control him. He does what I say. He doesn't alert to other dogs or fight. However, a 7 year old Doberman tried to mount my Buddy but quickly withdrew when Buddy showed his teeth. A smart move for sure. I love my Kangal. In Turkey, before the industrial farming and ranches were introduced, usually children would become shepherds of the village (it is still true for some underdeveloped parts of Turkey). My father was one such shepherd of his mountaintop village in Sivas when he was a little kid. Herding more than 100s of sheep whole day on the mountains kilometers away from the village where a wolf pack can descend,an eagle can swoop and lift a child, or a hungry bear can attack. Of course, the loyal, loving and diligent kangal dogs would make the first line of defence against such threats. Once during a cold winter, several wolves attacked around the house of my father family. Their kangal defended the turf with ferocity, fighting against 3 wolves at once. He defended long enough for my grandfather to call for help of other villagers, and they routed the wolves after killing 3 of them. The kangal lost both her front legs and had severe damage on her body, so they had to put her down. It's still amazing to know my father survived that day thanks to a kangal.

The ankles of the coil are thick. And they have forelock on their feet. In addition, their eyes are more frowning. There is a black color from their nose to their forehead. And that black color is whole. You can recognize them by their bone structure and by opening their feet forward and opening them left and right in case of danger. Real coils don't bite. It attacks and knocks out the enemy by hitting him with his chest. It waits until its owner arrives. If the enemy moves then he will kill it. It is a very noble animal and it is forbidden to be taken abroad. You cannot find everyone. But there are places that sell it. If anything attacks the owner or especially the babies or children of the house, then you will meet the real face of the kangal. It shatters people. Because children are sacred objects for them. They are protecting childs from enemies until die.

My family back in Turkey had a pure breed Kangal from Sivas. That dog was very capable, smart, and very calm. They took him to special vet to get his ears cropped and kept him in the village working as a guard. Wolves and cotoyes could not come close to chickens nor sheeps. He was larger than the dogs you have.

We had a kangal when we were kids. Even when he was a puppy he used to protect us , remember our kangal chasing away my cousin from house who was trying to prank us making animal sounds. Another story is when our clothes and sheets flew out from washing line to miles away to beach our kangal went looking for them and carried them all back. Never seen any other dog breed like kangal. So loyal so protective . Not just you but loyal to your family, children and protective over everything even the stuff you own

@@dmx504 Yes that is correct. Kangal comes from the Sivas area. Malakis and Boz are inner Antolia. Boz is generally a better herding dog they are more aware I would say. Yup. And they're pretty harsh towards strangers, let it be humans or other animals so you might want to socialise them from a young age if you don't want them to be overly protective. They're usually not good with little kids since they don't tolerate their ears and tails being pulled on though.
@LMMA-ng5ug

Kar Tibir that’s false, they’re a strong dog so they don’t mind their ears being pulled by kids. They are a very family oriented dog, I used to have one and although we never had kids pull on his ears, we still had plenty of family gatherings where he was around kids and we had no problems whatsoever. In fact most of the time we had kids around he’d lie down next to them looking for a nice belly rub!

@@LMMA-ng5ug I guess the ones I've seen were just extra aggressive towards strangers since they haven't been socialised. I've only met kangals that were being exclusively used as shepherds, hording cows, goats, sheep and what else. So it'd be normal to assume they don't come in contact with too many people.

The Kangals are being bred in Namibia as protection for the goats raised by villagers that cheetahs prey upon. They are trained to just chase the cheetahs away, not to kill them. This program was initiated by the Cheetah Foundation because the villagers were killing the cheetahs (an endangered species) to protect their goats. This way the villagers can live with cheetahs in the area and still know the dogs will keep their goats safe.

@@Animal-Watch In 2001 I met Sheila on an email list shared by people interested in the preservation of the Akbash and Kangal dog breeds. Sheila shared some great stories on the list. When I visited England in 2006, the Reeds invited me to their home, and I enjoyed wonderful hospitality, including great stories from the lives of the Reeds and the history of the Kangal breed in Turkey, in England, etc. Mike had not been very active on the email list, but when I met him in person he told great stories (all truthful, of course) and shared his insights with me. I was honored. The Reeds also showed me some excellent Kangals kept by them and friends of theirs. Thank you Animal Watch for capturing some excellent moments with the Reeds (and the classic Kangals in their home). This video was well-done. Breed enthusiasts need to make sure that the things known by the Reeds and other early breed enthusiasts are not forgotten.

One of my friend had a Kangal in their family farm and he was always complaining about it, his father loved that old dog but my friend did not, he said the Kangal sleeps all day and never seen at night, what will we do if Wolf or Bear attack to farm and animals, after death of that old dog, they got a german shepherd by request of my friend, german shepherd was barking, playing, running all of the day and was ready for anything at night but they realised their mistake when they started to loose their sheeps, they understood that Kangal was working without any advertisement... kangal is a kind of worker, it doesn't require much attention or your time, it doesn't require special food, just teach it its duty, show it the area to protect and never look back, it will do what is necessary, let it to be independent, you will see how more efficient it is.

Dad owned two at his farm. Although he didn’t raise sheep or cattle he had the dogs for protection. They barked a lot when strangers came to visit. When you told them to stop they would right away. When we were away nobody with bad intentions would bother to come to the ranch. They were aware of the the dogs. These are very loyal to their owners and families. They are work animals. You can’t sit on the couch and constantly hug them. Don’t consider having them if you live in hot humid southern States. They love cold and snow.

Kangals are bred to look like "sheep" (face and coat color wise) so that wolfs aren't able to spot them in the flock to plan attack points. These dogs are gentle giants. They never bark without a good reason. When two Kangals defend a flock against wolves, one watching the flock the other more in front line. They know wolves are smart, so are the Kangals.

We just recently added a Kangal to our farm, and he's by far the best dog I've ever owned. That's not to say just anyone should go out and buy one. I definitely think they're suited to certain environments. But he is so intelligent and loyal, right by my side at all times without a leash, even just as a puppy. He's calm, doesn't jump, and constantly scanning his environment for threats. He loves his goats and is gentle with our water fowl and poultry as well. He watches out for me, just as much as he looks out for his livestock. He is understandably hesitant of newcomers, but once he realizes they're not a threat, he love them too. Love the breed!
