Hey Vsauce! Chris Here. Septuplets are cool, makes music interesting just like this song, but what's a septuplet?

That part at the end where you're playing 4's on the ride bell while still keeping the septuplets with everything else is my favorite part. I think that every section in every instrument in this song is incredible! Keep up the good work, Chris!

Yo man just saw you live in orlando a few days ago, this is definitely my favorite song on the EP. I was the guy that said sunhead was in 29/16 and Plini told me and my brother we won a new car ;) keep up the great work man, keep groovin to Plini’s madness

I wish that more people had subscribed to you! You post some really inspiring content on your channel! P.S. Now I'm even more excited to see you with Plini and Simon, but also Tesseract and BTBAM on November 9th in Cologne! 🤘 Also, if I get this right, is "Sunhead" written in Septuplets as well? Although the song feels like some odd time signature first, the parts at the end, where you play the stack in half notes (e.g. at 3:32 or 4:37), makes the whole song seem to be just in an odd subdivision (like septuplets)? Thanks in advance :)
@ChrisAllisonDrums6 жыл бұрын
Many thanks - glad you are getting something from these videos! Can't wait for the Tesseract/BTBAM/Plini run - it's going to be a super rad time! As for Sunhead, it uses a 16th note rhythmic bed for the entire tune & for the most part, it's in 29/16. The parts you're referencing are just me trying to make 29/16 feel like 4/4 - a la Elliot Hoffman from Car Bomb - but it's still in 29.
@user-hg3lz8kw2e6 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisAllisonDrums Thank you for your answer! That will definitely help me now! I didn't even know to that point that there was something like a 29/16 time signature! One never stops learning...

Could you give some examples of songs that use nonuplets and 11-uplets?
@ChrisAllisonDrums6 жыл бұрын
The Black Page by Zappa uses pretty much every subdivision. I feel this part of this song as 11tuplets - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKevh3yLbcR2rs0 (excuse the plug). I'm sure Car Bomb probably mess with that stuff to varying degrees. I'm guessing the new AAL material will probably have some nontuplets on there somewhere. There's probably plenty of other examples but I am not really aware of them at the moment.

This makes my year! Because that’s how long it will take me to understand fully. In Salt I hear the 3 + 4... and I really hear the implied 4/4 (claps, ride bell). You know who would love this? Chick Corea and Al DiMeola...
@ChrisAllisonDrums4 жыл бұрын
@@johnhajewski1343 the funny thing about those claps is that they start on the second septuplet, meaning they never land on beat one..
@johnhajewski13434 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisAllisonDrums but if it is still in 7/16, won't the clap end on 2, 6, 3, 7, 4, 1, 5 and start over?
@ChrisAllisonDrums4 жыл бұрын
@@johnhajewski1343 sorry, I meant it starts on beat two, not the second septuplet - my bad. So if we think of it all in 4/4, the claps basically outline a 7 over 4 polyrhythm but starting on beat 2. Or if we're thinking in bars of 7/16, the claps start playing every 4th 16th note on beat one of the second bar of the four bar 7/16 loop - which reads much confusing than it actually is 😂

I used a Delite kit in this video - they discontinued this line when they released the Prolite drums a few years ago. They are pretty much the same kit though. I also have a SQ1 kit which is amazing! Definitely worth checking out!
