General manager Chris Ballard sat down with JJ Stankevitz at the NFL Annual League Meeting to discuss the strategy behind retaining the Colts' own players in free agency, the advantages of maintaining consistency on defense, expectations for Michael Pittman Jr. and Jonathan Taylor in year two of the offense and the growth he’s seen in Shane Steichen as he enters his second year as a head coach.

I support Ballard! good GM, drafts very well and he’s smart dude that knows football. Unfortunately results are not there after 7 years but we have to remember what happened with Andrew Luck and I think Mr Irsay understands that. I’m excited about this season. Go Colts!

Lol...if you've mentally resigned yourself to BELIEVING that resigning your own AND adding quality key pieces is impossible....then yes, he's the best around!! He basically told the world he F'd up by focusing ALL of their FA strategy on ONE player...Hunter. Hunter took time, and less money. After that they focused SOLELY on in house players. I think it wise to enter FA with a FEW key targets at positions of need. When you wiff, you can quickly pivot. This dude flipped the table upside down after missing on Hunter and called it a day.

I see a lot of people saying, "if we keep the same team cb has no intention of improvement but only mid consistency." Guys we just had a season with a potentially insane qb unfortunately getting injured, major roles in the defensive secondary either getting injured or hurt early in the season, and a head coaches first season just trying to find his barrings. We have a great if not outstanding team, which I agree can use a few more key players which can be picked up in the draft. If our key players can maintain 17 games I promise we have a playoff bound team. Every colt wants to be a colt because they bought in. They are hungry.

i mean everything that he said is great and informative and all, but why didn't he talk about the secondary? Our secondary was by far our biggest weakness last season, and right now it is worse than it was last season since we haven't signed Blackmon or an outside free agent. The only secondary move we have made is resigning Kenny. Every single colts fan wanted sneed. Colts fans are hoping for Diggs or Simmons at safety or signing a veteran corner. We have young talent int he secondary, but a veteran starter could be great while those guys develop. I do like a lot of the guys we resigned, but we haven't addressed our biggest weakness. Put this into perspective, we have signed 4 new contracts at DT (Grover, Lewis, Bryant, and Davis), but one 1 secondary piece (Kenny)

I’m all for signing talent and experience, but what’s the cap cost to the colts? And also, what are the reasons the secondary haven’t been as good- has it been the talent there in the position, or other reasons causing them to not be able to develop the way they should?
@andykleschick2047

Well could it be because they’re targeting secondary in the draft and don’t want to leak strategy?
@isaachunsberger2484
@isaachunsberger2484 2 ай бұрын
No I didn’t survey every colts fan, but it was very evident that nearly every fan wanted him. Nearly every single comment on the Colt’s instagram, Twitter, and KZbin was talking about acquiring Sneed. Maybe the Colts are looking to the draft to address secondary. I think that is a bad way to go about it. Right now our secondary is suffering from lack of experience, so adding another rookie probably wouldn’t help in that way. We have young talent like Juju, Jaylon Jones, Rodney Thomas, and Nick cross. Some of those guys could develop into good starters, but right now they seem more like backup pieces. They have raw talent, but suffer from lack of experience. You could argue that adding a starting veteran guy could hurt that development, but the secondary is hurting our roster right now. I believe this roster can be a good playoff contender, but the secondary is holding us back. The secondary cost us games last season. Everyone talks about the 4th and 1 vs the Texans, but they forget about the blown coverages that lead to Texans touchdowns. We lost games because of it.

This is going to be the 1st year Ballard has had the same starting QB as the prior year in his 7 year tenure. He has done a solid job overall considering. Not very many GMs could have survived what he went through.
@mikebunting3444
@mikebunting3444 2 ай бұрын
Yes, not many GM's would survive never winning their respective division and also being 0-2 in the playoffs with 2 road playoff losses. Edit, 1-2 in the playoffs (thanks Andrew!) .
@neverstopimproving89
@neverstopimproving89 2 ай бұрын
@mikebunting3444 how about: 1) inheriting a team that had absolutely nothing on it aside from a solid center, a solid WR and a QB. (With center being the only remaining piece 3 years later. 2) spending your first 3 off-seasons building around your QB, only to have him retire 2 weeks before the start of year 3. So that's 52 players Ballard has had to bring in and make it work within only 7 years while having to change everything around after year 3 while staying under the salary cap and only having a handful of draft picks every year. Also, while not having a new franchise QB until year 7. Oh and while also being completely new to being a GM. All I'm saying is Ballard got a very raw deal that would have crushed just about any other new GM and has done well considering and clearly, Irsay understands that as well. It's too bad that you don't. Oh, and he is 1-2 in the playoffs. Interesting that you left out Luck's win against Houston back in 2018.
@mikebunting3444
@mikebunting3444 2 ай бұрын
@@neverstopimproving89 apologies, forgot about the win against Hou in 18'. 1-2 is soooooooo much better. With or without Andrew, he hasn't attained ANY of his goals. Win the division? No. Win the NFL's least competitive/worst division? No. Irsay is a bit too loyal to his GM's if anything. Understandable after seeing his father's antics firsthand. But remember when he called in Grigson and Pagano to fire them but instead told them to work it out and gave them another chance? 99% of all new GM's are given a "very raw deal" when they are first hired...as it's the reason they are being hired in the first place. He's given Ballard plenty of chances. Ballard thus far, going into his 8th season, hasn't put together a solid roster as of yet. After next season's end of year presser where Ballard will again says that it's his fault and that he didn't do enough to make the team better maybe you will start to come around. He's admitted to not doing enough the past couple of years already. The Andrew Luck retiring excuse is cooked. Almost every team in the NFL has a different QB nowadays. Ballard could only use that as his excuse for a season or two, beyond that, anyone using it is kind of pathetic.
@neverstopimproving89
@neverstopimproving89 2 ай бұрын
@mikebunting3444 "hasn't put together a solid roster yet." I'm guessing you mean if he doesn't win the superbowl, it isn't a solid roster. In 2019, we went 7-9 with a backup QB after the starter quit 2 weeks before week 1. 2020, we came very close to beating the Bills in the WC. 2021, we were a complete Wentz collaspe away from making the playoffs with 2 games to go. 2022 was a tank season all the way. Even Ballard's comments before the season confirmed that. Last year, we were one pass away from winning the division and finished 9-8 while having a backup QB for the majority of the season. All while not having the same starting QB the following year. The most important position in football. That's ok, though. I've learned people like you have unrealistic expectations. Even if Ballard was to win the division and make it to the championship game, you wouldn't be happy and would still want him gone. So I'll just let you keep griping over something you have no control over.
@mikebunting3444
@mikebunting3444 2 ай бұрын
@@neverstopimproving89 Almost. Almost. Almost. Ballard's teams have "almost" on a lot of things, especially when the playoffs are easily in reach in the AFC South. Close but no cigar is good enough, I guess... I hope I'm wrong and I do love Steichen and also think Richardson will be very good - maybe as early as this season...but actual facts have proved otherwise thus far for Ballard. His track record is not good when it comes to actually winning, and throwing all those excuses in there for why he didn't win means absolutely nothing. BTW, 80%+ of all NFL teams will have a different starting QB for them in 2024 vs 2023. Why does Ballard keep getting a pass for the product he puts out on the field? I mean, Ryan Tannehill even has more playoff appearances than all Colts QB (Combined) under Ballard.

People want Ballard to spend big in FA when AR hasn’t proved he can stay healthy. What if we use all our cap and AR gets hurt week 1? Ballard had 2 qbs retire on him, moved on from Wentz after a year, and moved on from Ryan after a year. People make fun of the qb carousel but it’s better than building around a bad qb. @thegreyghost4191 look what we've gone through. QB hell. No team identity. He can be blamed for some. Other is just bad luck. He has drafted good. He got depth but needs starters, if he's found his QB. We have a 4 year window.

@@jayhelm4256 lol, you are delusional. Ballard literally calls all of the shots for this team, the buck stops with him. He should of been fired at the end of the 2022 season, you know, when he totally lost control of the team.

54-60, hired frank reich, has had 7 different starting QBs, no explosive players outside of JT who is probably washed now, and on and on. Yet everyone is convinced he hit gold with steichen and richardson. History would disagree!

There is a certain type of person - one that does not build, or improve, or help out. People who are in the way and consume resources while providing nothing to society. I have found that these types of people do not like Ballard. These are the same people who are EXTREMELY easy for the media to manipulate. They are fools and cancers and a danger to free societies everywhere.

Why are you having that comparison. You do not compare GM's to former GM's of your team. You compare him to the other 31 teams GM. Ballard is nearly the 32nd. You guys need to start asking the right questions

I agree 💯 about being a horrible GM should have been fired 3 years ago But look who the owner is a drug addict who's just as clueless . This franchise new slogan should be strive to mediocre . Colts will battle it out with Tennessee for last place . Colts will be lucky to win 6 games this year.

Let's just say I waited 1 year for free agency to be Mediocre at best. Colts philosophy = cheap wins. At least 1 WR/CB/SS/Pass Rusher added would be nice. BTW DT Taven isn't getting it done CB.

54-60-1 it's time for this guy to go, he is trying to construct this team like it's the 06 Bears. Before Shaq was let go our best players are a guard and a WLB... can't hit on positions needed to succeed in today's NFL. CB, WR, DE... no division titles since 2014, 1 playoff win in that span. Will continue to lead the league in cap space once again, trade back in the draft. Don't worry he likes our guys, and the guys we got fit our culture. what culture haven't done anything in years... Indy is not an attractive free agent destination you have to throw some cash around. But he will continue to turn to the bargain bin...Get this guy out of here.
