Hey Chris! You save my bacon today! I just want to thank you for your great idea of using the rope. I was on my own, riding some new trails, got stuck in the bottom of the hill, after dropping the bike 6 times and warn myself up, I just gave up, walked a mile to the main road trying to find help. After wait for 1 hour and no help. I returned to the bike, got my ropes out and tried your technique. It worked!! I just had enough rope to tied to a small tree up the hill and got myself out! The rope trick worked great! You are a genius!!! I am eternally grateful!! Cheers from Nashville!

Used this method to get me a tough spot by myself. Worked great! Thanks for sharing.

I'd also consider threading the rope through a crash bar nearer to the front for situations where the back end wants to pull around. It may also be possible to help lift a downed bike with this method.

Love the rope/winch idea. Was certain the rope was going to touch the exhaust and melt, but it didn't happen. Any concern about bending or breaking the spoke?

after a few wraps all the weight is on the wrapped rope. the wraps happen at the beginning of the hill under light load, that spoke isn't really very stressed i think.
