This must be one of, if not, the best rides on the track ever. I’ve watched this ride many times, and still get emotional every time ❤

MUCH kudos and respect for Mr. Boardman, but, the helmet and skinsuit alone (BEFORE one takes into account the windless indoor track) could have been more than those mere 10 meters better difference. But then again, to his credit, he has 5 years here on Eddy, as compared to when Le Cannibal did his thing, and it is at sea level, so the indoors and no wind is probably a wash as compared to altitude in the wind.?? STILL, even if you take that away from him, that he got that close to King Eddy's 'unbeatable' record shows the level pursuiter/TT rider/etc. Chris was in his heyday. 👍👍 He was most certainly 10x SMOOTHER here than Merckx was during his record, and no one can hug that black line around the whole track like this man could! What gearing is he using here?? What I do not get though is WHY were they doing training sessions/testing and practice runs with aero wheels, when he was not going to be using them in the actual attempt?? I never even knew about his osteoporosis condition, and just how severe a case he had. If he was competing today, using the humongous gears that all of the pursuiters/hour record riders are using, he might have given himself fractures just from the musculoskeletal stresses of starting out of the gate!!! 😱

I have discovered that he used a 54x14 for this record, if anyone is interested.

Still can’t compare to Merckx, steel frame no disk wheels and outdoors, until that happens, Merckx still the champ.

a brilliant rider cheated out of so much by frauds on epo in the dirtiest era of all. Chris would have groaning trophy cabinet if he had all the medals he actually won. Yes Miguel Indurain that gold medal in Atlanta "you won" should be sent to Chris asap. Fairly sickening to see the cheat Armstrong catch him in the TT.

Due to track conditions, better tires, clipless pedals, tighter jersey and climate control I still feel Eddy Merckx yet holds his record. Mind you, I'm not biased...yeah right.

As far as the tires go, it looks like Eddy was using the white Clement Seta Records, which most likely are not all that far behind what Chris was using. But yeah, Chris had some of those other advantages you've mentioned, and less spokes in the wheels as well, but both had front radial spoking patterns.

@@nofascistsonmywatch I know Eddy was riding an outdoor track and am pretty sure Chris was on an indoor track - what I meant by climate control. That alone is huge.
@nofascistsonmywatch2 жыл бұрын
@@jthepickle7 Chris was definitely on the Manchester INDOOR, UCI certified, 250 meter wooden velodrome for this record. It makes one wonder that between an at altitude OUTDOOR track, subject to (possibly STRONG, despite 'picking the correct/perfect day') winds, and an INDOOR but sea level track, where is the tradeoff, or which gives more of an edge/advantage over an hour's maximal effort??

@@tman5634 well said i would think he was tested for steroids regularly as the UCI did not like the fact that he had set the records due to the aerodynamic way that was being used

It’s definitely real. Any significant amount of physical exertion strains the endocrine system and extreme endurance athletes will generally have lower than average testosterone.
