It's a beautiful thing to see the selflessness of Dan Bigham in assisting Ganna to his record. The individual gets celebrated, as they should, incredible effort but the kudos to the entire team.

I love to imagine young generations start riding bicycles thanks to such charismatic riders. Awesome feat. When you look at what it takes to do this now it helps to explain why cycling is getting so expensive. Gone are the days when the likes of Obree made his own bike out of washing machine parts. These companies have to recoup some of this investment somehow.

They want him to have a reasonably high heart rate without being too hot, so they have him warm up pretty hard and then wear an ice jacket and put his hands in ice to cool him down

i think it's a difficult question to answer in any realistic way. when going fast enough (not just on a bike) air friction plays a larger and larger role in power consumption... at about 15km/h air resistance is the main force the rider works against (it goes up to over 90%) at the speed these riders pedal. so pedaling in open air for one hour presents the rider with such inconsistent air resistance that a world record would depend a lot on pure luck of wind direction and intensity... ps: even sprint runners feel this 'wind inconsistency' and at a certain wind speeds, the races "don't count"
