Poor Golota. Everytime he was about to pull out a career important victory (Reddick Bowe, Ruiz or this fight) he either disqualifies himself or the judges rob him. He was able to hit Byrd quite a bit in this fight. Golota showed good timing in this fight

Golota is an underrated heavyweight for sure. He was beating Bowe pretty easily before the low blows and beat Byrd I think. If they scored this fight in his favor it wouldn't bother me at all. Solid jab, cross and hooks, good body work and most of the time he put punches together well.
@jenkemjones68 Жыл бұрын
Well he was good no doubt.I understand him quitting in the Tyson fight as he was truly injured.Still clueless as to why he blew the Bowe fights with deliberate and very low tactics.If not for that then I'd agree with being underrated.
@douglasroseveare7295 Жыл бұрын
@@jenkemjones68 Mike Tyson beat most guys even after his prime. Bowe did too. I will neve understand why Golota threw a combination into the crotch of Bowe when he was arguably beating him badly. That is a question that will remain unanswered forever. There were a bunch of better heavyweight fighters throughout history, don't get me wrong. Gene Tunney would work shop on a lot of guys now and probably beat 95% of the division on any given night in boxing history. He is top 10 all time I think. 1960's Ali would destroy Golota and pretty much any man who ever set foot in the ring. No underrating there. Marciano and Tyson wouldn't stand a chance against those 2 in their prime.
@jenkemjones68 Жыл бұрын
@douglasroseveare7295 I totally forgot about Tunney.He was something in that era.But for Golata it certainly will remain a mystery why he pulled those antics when he did against Bowe.We can only assume while ahead on the cards,Bowe made Golata give 100% to stay ahead.He was big,very strong,and somewhat skilled.But if things weren't going his way,he would find a way out quickly.Foreman was the same and maybe had less skill,but he had a warrior's mentality.Far as I know Golata has still never explained why he did what he did against Bowe.Maybe he felt winded and disqualified himself before letting it show?Who really knows.

@32:36 these commentators are clueless. Byrd didn't "double-over" because of a body shot. He did because Golota was pushing his head down. It's typical for the bigger fighter to lean over on the smaller fighter to drain their energy. Normally the ref has to break it up but Golota backed away himself, and that's why he didn't hit Byrd as he was coming back up.
@wendaltvedt4673 Жыл бұрын

Very underrated fight, such an interesting clash of styles. Entertaining to watch but a nightmare to score, personally I had Golota winning by a few rounds. I think Byrd lost a good amount of the early rounds by laying back on the ropes, he was countering well but just not frequently enough or hard enough to negate all the shots Golota was landing. To me it seemed like Byrd was a little over-confident in his defensive abilities on the ropes, he showed in the later rounds he could box well in centre-ring and had he done that more throughout the fight I could've seen him winning. Golota showed like he did in the Bowe fights that he was a talented fighter (Good jab, solid body puncher and physically imposing) but unlike those fights he fought within the rules and was unlucky not to get the decision coming off a bad run of form and inactivity. Golota remained consistently unpredictable as he was expected not to show up in this fight and surprised people by doing the exact opposite.

He was before his time - no one knew any eastern boxers and Don King wasn’t gonna go out of his way to figure out how to promote a white guy from half a world away. Riddick Bowe was probably the most dangerous fighter with the most potential of the era (hate me if you want) and Golata had his number. Why he decided to throw full combinations at Bowes nuts is one of life’s many mysteries.

"Robbery" has to be the most overused word when describing decisions in close boxing matches. This was another very close fight that could have gone either way. Golota was busier, came forward and landed a bit more, especially to the body. Byrd landed the clearer, crisper punches. I felt Golota took most of the early rounds and Byrd most of the later rounds, but I gave the crucial 12th round to Golota and had him winning by one point. Stop with the robbery nonsense (either way); I have no issue at all with this being ruled a draw or either fighter winning a close decision. Lots of close rounds that were very tough to score.

I think these Byrd vs Golota and Golota vs Ruiz fights showed one thing: *Neither Byrd nor Ruiz was a serious threat to Lennox Lewis* . (Lewis destroyed Golota in one round, beat Tua 12-0, took out Grant easily, etc.) (Byrd and Ruiz were walking around with titles stripped from Lewis near the end of his career, both claiming to be champion.)
@mallokribi3326 Жыл бұрын
So true. And some people said that Lennox Lewis was scared of John Ruiz 🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂 and didn't want to fight Byrd because he was difficult to box and annoying. Lennox Lewis is the smartest boxer that i saw in heavyweights boxing with Muhammad Ali. When Lennox knew that je was against a dangerous fighter (David Tua, Mike Tyson, Tommy Morrison, Evander Holyfield, Donnovan Ruddock, Vitali Klitschko, Ray Mercer...), he took his time, saw their weakness, hit at the right time and when he could, finish you (he was a great finisher). When he felt than he can finish you without being in real danger, he charged you and finish you. With John Ruiz and Byrd who don't hit hard, Lennox would charged them and finish them early. Maybe he would be more patient against Byrd because he was a very good defensive boxer but i'm sure that he would KO both
@taekwondotime Жыл бұрын
@@mallokribi3326 Agreed 100%. I think Ruiz might have survived a few rounds with his dirty boxing style of punching and grabbing, and tried to make an ugly fight out of it, but Ruiz would be eating jabs constantly, losing every round on points, and eventually Ruiz would either get penalized for holding or Lewis would just get tired of it and pound him with uppercuts inside until he dropped. Ruiz was always leaning forward and coming in with his head down. Perfect for Lewis's uppercuts or his overhand right. I think Byrd survives longer, just because he was so elusive, and a lefty. I could see the fight going 8 rounds with Lewis jabbing at Byrd, winning points, preventing Byrd from getting inside on him, but remaining patient until the big one came. Eventually Lewis would hit him with something big and that would be it for Byrd.
@slowjoe0485 Жыл бұрын
I agree that Lewis would've beaten both Byrd and Ruiz but your reasoning for it, that he beat guys both Byrd and Ruiz struggled with or lost to, isn't concrete. You're forgetting styles make fights, just because Fighter A beats Fighter B and Fighter B beats Fighter C it doesn't mean Fighter A necessarily beats Fighter C. I'm not saying it isn't something you should consider when thinking about how a fight might've played out but there are plenty of examples to show how styles create unexpected outcomes, The Ali-Frazier-Foreman fights most famously. It's better to look at the attributes of the fighters individually rather than trying to scale them to each other based on common opponents.

True Lennox was the best but had some chin problems. But would revenge the defeats in the rematches
@slowjoe0485 Жыл бұрын
@@danpolseno9728 I'm not sure Lennox really had chin problems, He got dropped by a clean right hand from McCall and got up but the ref waved it off pretty quickly. He got KO'd by Rahman in a fight he was ill prepared for also from and incredibly clean well-timed right hand that I think most HW's would've been flattened by. He fought plenty of other big punchers and was mostly fine, in his last fight with Vitali Klitschko he took some huge shots but ultimately gritted it out till Vitali's cut caused the fight to be stopped. It's a bit of a myth that Lewis had a glass jaw and likely doesn't factor in too much against Byrd and Ruiz anyway since neither were huge punchers
How does the ref let Byrd get away with all his bullshit .

You know what I don't understand why everybody had such a problem fighting crisford all you had to do was go to his body for like three to four rounds and then he would have been washed up I mean I know he's got a lot of head movement and he's hard to hit to the head but you're not going to miss his body and you wear the body out and then and then you could knock him out I don't understand why boxers can't figure this out that's why you watch films so you can figure out how to fight a fighter and know how to win the key to Chris bird with body punches that's all you had to do
