The singer and frontman for Soundgarden, Chris Cornell also forged his own career after the band's initial break-up in 1997. Soundgarden had rightfully become one of rock's most popular bands on the strength of such albums as Badmotorfinger and Superunknown. And with each album, Cornell's vocals grew stronger -- farther away from heavy metal screaming and toward a true singing style. Euphoria Morning, his first solo album, was in the singer/songwriter mold, but he also pursued true pop music on 2009's Scream, with help from producer Timbaland. Cornell also joined forces with former Rage Against the Machine members as Audioslave, and continued recording and performing -- both as a solo artist and with a resurgent Soundgarden -- until his death in 2017. Posthumous releases like 2020's No One Sings Like You Anymore, Vol. 1 continued to celebrate his legacy as a powerful and expressive vocalist.
From the start, however, Cornell's talents weren't limited to his work with Soundgarden. He organized a tribute for late Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood in the form of 1990's Temple of the Dog project, which featured a stripped-down sound and yielded the enduring hit "Hunger Strike."
Rage Against the Machine had decided not to break up after longtime vocalist Zack de la Rocha left the band, opting instead to find another singer and carry on under a different name. Cornell accepted an invitation to jam and pen a few songs (which former Rage guitarist Tom Morello described as "really groundbreaking") and, shortly thereafter, officially joined forces with the former Rage members under the moniker Audioslave. Produced by Rick Rubin, the band's self-titled debut arrived in November 2002 and went multi-platinum. The follow-up effort, 2005's Out of Exile, debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and was followed by the platinum-selling Revelations in 2006. Despite such success, Cornell left the band that same year, citing the usual "irreconcilable differences" for his departure.
Cornell returned to his solo career with 2007's Carry On. Although the album was largely biographical, it also featured a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" (a rendition made famous one year later by American Idol contender David Cook) and a song from the James Bond movie Casino Royale. Two new singles, "Ground Zero" and "Watch Out," were offered as digital downloads one year later, featuring a newfound emphasis on electronics and studio trickery. The tracks had been recorded with producer Timbaland, with whom Cornell partnered for the creation of his third solo album. Stocked with drum machines and R&B melodies, Scream arrived in March 2009, heralded by Timbaland as "the best work I've done in my career" but received poorly by several critics.
The following year, Soundgarden joined the many popular '90s alternative bands who reunited in the 2000s and 2010s, headlining that year's Lollapalooza festival and releasing the retrospectives Telephantasm and Live on I-5, which documented the group's 1996 tour, as well as recording new songs. The following spring, however, Cornell returned to his solo career with the solo acoustic Songbook tour, from which came two EPs and the Songbook album, all of which were released in 2011.
Cornell returned to Soundgarden in 2016, and the band began work on a new album. In the meantime, the group released a deluxe reissue of Ultramega OK in March 2017 and began an American tour that April. On May 17, following the band's concert at Detroit's Fox Theater, Cornell was found dead in his hotel room; he had taken his own life at the age of 52.
Cornell's body was cremated on May 23, 2017. His funeral took place on May 26, 2017, at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.Attendees and speakers at the ceremony included Soundgarden members Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, and Ben Shepherd, as well as former members Hiro Yamamoto and Scott Sundquist, along with Audioslave's Tom Morello, and Pearl Jam/Temple of the Dog members Jeff Ament and Mike McCready. Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and Brad Delson performed Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". At the end of the funeral, Temple of the Dog's song "All Night Thing" accompanied mourners as they exited.Cornell's ashes were placed next to his friend Johnny Ramone's cenotaph statue - Ramone is not buried there, he was cremated and his ashes were retained by his widow.

Yeah, it’s crazy. We had this happen in our friend group back in 2002. May that year our friend Ray passed away. One month almost to the day, our friend Chad passed away. Chad was at Ray’s funeral and everyone from Ray’s funeral were at Chad’s funeral. There were only a handful of people that weren’t at each other’s funerals. It was such a bad time for us. Chad would’ve turned 45 last week

I met Chris once when he played a gig in 1991 in Bristol, UK. I went with a few friends from Cardiff - Wales capital city, a hour trip on the train and I went to a record store in the daytime & bought a picture disc vinyl 7" of Jesus Christ Pose and went into the venue in the daytime to find the Soundgarden guys and found Chris first - he was happy to sign my vinyl record cover and waited for me to chat more but I got starstruck and thanked him and then found Kim who seemed grumpy to see me and Matt who was also happy to sign, cheerful like Chris.. that was an awesome day! Their gig in the night was so cool, a nice initmate venue called the Bierkeller where I also saw Mudhoney

I was crushed when Chris Cornell died, a great voice, musician, and man. I started listening to him when he was in Temple of the Dog. (still one of my top 5 CDs). After that I fell in love with Soundgarden. I also loved Audioslave, a supergroup for sure. I love Hollywood Cemetery and was able to pay my respects to Chris and others too. It was a sad walk around the cemetery.

It still hurts and pains me Chris' & Chester's Deaths. Both were so talented, both great song writers and performers, both also shared the same issues with Depression and Drugs. It's so sad the way they both died and I can't get over the fact they didn't receive the help they needed to prevent their deaths. RIP Chris Cornell 🙏🕊️. Thanks Scott for doing this 😞💔

Yet another great video Scott. Like you said - The Voice. Whether or not I dug all the songs, I always took in those vocals. One of the best indeed! He could hit pretty much every note vocally and oh! so beautifully and with so much power. I don't know which song I love the most from him (group-wise or solo) but one that is striking me at the moment is his live (in the studio) take of "Nothing Compares 2U." He totally makes it his own - and deservedly so. Very sincere and touching tribute, my friend. Thanx so much for the post. Until next time, take care!

😢😢Christopher 😢😢 his Ava Maria is soooo beautiful. I can't believe how unworthy his gravesite keeps getting. Every time I get out there. It makes me sad. St Widow should spend some money on his grave. Instead of suing the world & going on shopping vacations around the world. She claims she's been taking care of it. I'm sorry but I've never been more surprised at how it looks. It looks horrible. Are those the plants that needs the least amount of care, water? What are they? She really didn't like his family? She didn't even put SON & BROTHER. So sad he committed suicide. I believe he did. His hyoid bone was still in tact and NOT FRACTURED. I hate when people say he was killed, spout conspiracy theories about him exposing pedo rings. So fake.

I also believe Chester Bennington was murdered as well. One day the real truth will come out as it can only hide in the darkness 🌑 for so long before it has no other choice but to come forward into the light 🌞 where it belongs. #JUSTICEFORCHRIS 😇 🙏 #JUSTICEFORCHESTER 😇 🙏

I agree Chris did not commit suicide(neither did Chester) As a fan I believe the real truth (not this crap 💩 we have been told about them taking their own lives) will come out as it can only hide in the darkness 🌑 for so long before it has no other choice but to come forward into the light 🌞 where it belongs. #JUSTICEFORCHRIS 😇 🙏 #JUSTICEFORCHESTER 😇 🙏
