Last week tho I listened to Jacob Collier in concert with Christian Euman on drums, and oh shit have they listened and pushed the boundaries that Chris, J-Dilla and few others started exploring...!! It's amazing to see the speed at which music is evolving. This era is gonna be reflected upon as one of the greatest period in the history of music as a whole, hopefully in a time where commercial value won't be of much relevance in judging greatness...!

when Chris starts super imposing/modulating at 5.03 ... all that must relate to the original quarter note pulse....what's the logic behind the ladder he's ascending through?
@WilliamSlaght7 жыл бұрын
Robert Minton Chris Dave is free player. A lot of things are just free from the original rhythm, but we can find close estimates of what he's playing.
@OrganicPumpkinSeeds6 жыл бұрын
I can confirm what linkbulletbill says. I have a lot of experience making grooves out of rarely played tuplets over a regular quarter pulse, (for example, playing 7 equal notes over a bar of 4/4, instead of 8 eighth notes, and then making a groove out of it), and also playing different tempos at the same time, (playing along to a part of a track 1/5, 1/4, and 1/3 slower is actually quite easy), but I couldn't find any solid division of what Chris is doing. It's made harder, because he doesn't start on the '1'. He comes pretty close to certain divisions, but then goes out of synch again. This leads me to believe he is playing free time. This is especially obvious in the part where he just speeds up to match the tempo again. I reckon, the thought process he went through, was to set a new tempo in his head and just start playing it whenever, (hence why he doesn't start on the 1), and just keep to it for as long as needed, whilst enjoying the contrasting sounds from his band mates keeping the original tempo.
@OrganicPumpkinSeeds6 жыл бұрын
By the way, multiple times in the first groove he sets up at 5:02, he comes closest to playing half note (minim) triplets, (that's 3 equal notes over an entire bar of 4/4), but instead of placing natural emphasis on it as 1 (2) (3) 1 (2) (3), as you normally would with half note triplets so that it always restarts at the start of the 4/4 bar, he is grouping them into four, with bass drum on the first, and snare on the third, to make a groove that creates that sound of him carrying over bars: 1 (2) 3 (1) 2 (3) 1 (2) 3... But as I mentioned before, it isn't long before you can noticeably hear he suddenly goes out of synch.
@bsohre17035 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure he starts giving the swung sixteenth at the end of four the down beat after starting the half note triplets (watch his bass, it switches from 1 to just before) which gives it the shifting feel. He then starts cleaning it up with inverted swiss army triplets which then shift to the down beat (making them non-inverted) which leads to the sixteenth note breakdown. Advanced class for sure, also totally impossible without an extremely tight band like you said.
