Waited to go to this concert for 3 1/2 years just to go in and miss the encore of this because I'm on the phone in the foyer talking about stolen carts!

After waiting three years, I was at this concert, and I can’t believe I had to miss the encore of this song because I was on the phone in the foyer talking about stolen shopping carts.

I think this is the most underrated KZbin comment I have ever seen. So many questions. So little context. So much emotion. I doff my hat.

@@inkysquid4 nah mate, this is lypsincing lol. There’s clearly an audible audience in the background. Not to mention the telltale “wireless” mics... and how almost none of his equipment is plugged in or played in-time

I think I saw this on an ITV concert - mike mansfield or cue the music? In the late 80s, song always stuck with me.

Great song, seriously lip-synced here though. It was EXACTLY as the studio recording and at the end on the last note he moved his mouth from the MIC and there was NO change in the note...So NOT a live performance of the song

Yeah. And he every now and then he takes his hands off that 12-string-guitar which miraculously continues to play.

Such a great guy and artist. Its so obvious its playback and lip synced. I hated that. Its so obvious. All u need to do is listen to the original and compare to live 🤨🙄😥🤕

They're certainly miming their instruments to a backing track of the original song, but Chris is definitely singing along with the song, which can clearly be heard. As much as most 80's performances were soley lip-synced. Some performances by certain singers were done with playback yes, but the singer actually sings along through the only live mic on stage, doubling their own voice. Which is exactly what is happening here in this video. You can tell, because not only is Chris's mic visibly different to all the others, but you can clearly hear him singing along, and doubling his voice. That's why his vocals sound so big, especially in the chorus. However if you listen closely to the verses, you can here his voice doubling even clearer, because there is no doubling on the original track for specific parts of the verses, only occasional harmony. So he's definitely singing along through an open microphone, while everyone are miming their Instruments to the backing track. This usually only happens with really talented singers though, with some performances doubled live by the singer, but some are totally mimed, depending on the show and specific performance. Just listen carefully and you'll notice this with a lot of singers TV performances from back then. Especially if you watch a few of them, you will notice little tweaks in the vocals that aren't in the recorded version. It's mostly done to vocally sound convincingly live, and throw you off from the fact that they're miming the rest of it. Sometimes it's works well, sometimes the miming of the other instruments and backing vocals make it too obvious, which makes people think it's ALL mimed, a bit like this video lol. If you look hard enough, you'll find a lot of performances by lots of singers, that have either true live versions, backing track with live doubled vocal versions, and totally lip-synced versions too. You just have to have a good ear, and notice the differences. Another note, that's why the music sounds a little muffled, but his vocals are as clear as a ringing bell, and sound awesome too lol. Just to prove my point, here is a truly lip-synced version, see if you can hear the difference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHe9Z4atoqqef8U

The music was identical, but his voice wavered in places; which would indicate he WAS actually singing, but I agree with the other comments about a backing track used to replace the music and clearly the back up vocals too. He obviously wasn't singing the bridge with the muttering voices.
