I'll be honest, this performance really blew my mind. I watched on my phone last night......twice! Now I have to see it on a big monitor. Chris is in a different league all together. He's what I would call a "real jazz player" in that he breaks boundaries and his improvisation transcends this world. He's simply amazing! That's why he's always got these amazing jazz drummers and bass players with him.

it's a credit to Jimi 's composing skills that so many guitar players can improvise around the structure of the piece without it losing one shred of its content. Hard to write easy for others to improvise.

before the days of the internet, his first album Texas Sugar Strat Majik was released. I had seen a small little "blurb" article about him in Guitar Player Magazine. I went to my local record store and bought the cassette (lol...had a CD player but not yet in my 1991 Honda civic). Put it in and was blown away! Listened to that album nonstop for months (still one of my favorite blues albums of all time). When I saw that he was playing in a local club, I had to twist my friend's arm to go with me on a Sunday night. I knew, based on the CD, that he was an absolute beast. He was that and more. He was on fire back then/that night. I'm still convinced that that was the best blues possibly ever played! (From records or live). The friend that I had to beg to go still thanks me to this day for making him go. lol This recording was made when Chris was touring for his "Romp" release. I've seen him many times and he never disappointed me. I do prefer more of his straight blues playing but his jazzy excursions are cool to. It's who he is....

The audio for this was recorded mere inches from the kick-drum, and the bass you are hearing is from the monitors, not the PA. Not the ideal place to record from, but I do this by myself, and needed to be able to keep an eye on the recorder. The audio on this video is not representative of the Duarte sound/tone. Please keep this in mind. This place was NOT built for live music in the first place. The drop ceiling and tile floor were probably the first clues...

@@jupitermoongauge4055 I'll have to disagree. Maybe he's not playing like Herb Ellis, Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, or Joe Pass, but he's definitely playing what jazz is really all about....and that is "pure improvisation from the soul". @@eltigre8978 Stern and Sco know music theory in great depth and play by its structures with great precision.
