The original animated works are much better. And although I would've liked to see the version with Chloe Grace Moretz much more than the one we got, with her being black, they even changed this ones ending. They should've just had Prince Eric die in the process of Ariel trying to save him, instead of in the Disney version where she saved him. Personally, I am one for the darker endings, that either leave things unsaid or even just are complete chaos, but I like in the original story for The Little Mermaid, written by Hans Christian Anderson, where Little Mermaid dies because she didn't get her 'true loves' first kiss and she, after finding him married to another local princess, decides to die herself instead of Prince Eric. She decides death for herself instead of the prince is a far better option, and before the prince, who sees Ariel outside his window, can try to go save her, she dies. Rather than kill the prince, who she still longs for, she throws herself off a cliff, and Turns to foam. And floats down to the bottom of the sea. The prince also dies later on by inciting a fight inside a tavern in which he too dies. With a smile on his face. Having remembered the mermaid's name who saved him. Now, that is an interesting but sad ending. However, Disney altered that by giving Prince Eric the chance to save Ariel from her fate by kissing her before the morning came and then they live happily ever after.
