Anaisa Erksen So basically Boston accents exaggerate the vowel sounds in words, so the would exaggerate a, e, i, o, u,. You can notice when he speaks when he says “father” or “underwear” and even slightly when he says “car” but the “r” is sharper. When they exaggerate the vowel, a lot of times they drop the constant if it’s at the end of the word. So when he says “father” it sounds like “fahthuh” and “underwea-uh” and car still has the sharper r so, he says “cah-r”. It’s not SUPER strong because he’s spent a lot of years acting without his accent, but if you know what it sounds like, you can recognize it. I’m from around Chicago, which is in the Midwest of the U.S, and we have a similar pronunciation of vowels like when people say socks, it’s “saahhks”. If you listen to Ben Affleck in interviews, his Boston Accent is still very present.

The Handicrapped Stain I don’t think you can really hear a difference for many people when it comes to accents of the U.K. and the British Isles, as well (many Americans get Irish accents and Scottish accents confused). It just depends on if you have an hear for accents and their small differences. If you spent a month traveling in the U.S., you can definitely hear the differences. In Illinois, there are so many different accents from Southern Illinois accents which sounds like Tennessee accents, to central Illinois that have a mix of everything, to the Chicagoland area which can range from the classic “Da Bears” accent, to a crazy mix of multiple Midwestern accents. The U.S. accents, remember, are influenced by hundreds of different immigrants from hundreds of different countries and their languages intertwined with English, which influenced many of our accents. If you kind of google different accents of the U.S. you can really see the difference. And “Southern” American accents could mean Texas accents, and Oklahoma accents, and Louisiana accents which are different from New Orleans accents even though it’s in Louisiana, and Georgia accents are different than Mississippi accents.
