Chris's father taught her to be very passive and precise when playing. Passive so her opponent would make the mistakes, and precise to be able to control the ball to wherever she wanted. Her playing style never changed.
@monica012077
@monica012077 Жыл бұрын
I never saw her style as passive. She was an excellent defender but in some of those points(particularly the 70's ones) she was able to dictate play off the ground. All with a wooden racquet.
@willkittwk

@@monica012077 true Chrissy was a masterful point constructor. Think more like she milked errors from opponents rather than waited for them. As most women played from baseline with wood rackets when she started its harder to hit winners from baseline so she had to work the lines and the angles.
@andersdahlbeck2907
@andersdahlbeck2907 11 ай бұрын
I think it changed a bit in the mid 80s. She got more aggressive, hit the ball harder and wanted to finish off the points quicker. She did still rely on those precise baseline shots though.

To those complaining about how much slower tennis was back then, remember that is not only than today's women players are way more athletic (in men's tennis the difference is not that evident), it's not only the wooden rackets... it's also the filming technology. The 4:3 aspect ratio and less amount of zooming in the court makes it appear smaller. In present day tennis matches the court looks *huge* and so the players seem to move unbelievably fast and the ball is a lighting. If someone filmed a Nadal-Djokovic with those old cameras they also would look moving slower.

There was a point very early in the 1st set of her 1989 victory over Seles that not only should have been here but should have been #1 because it was representative of the play style she had after adopting the new racquet and fitness regime. Go find it. At the end, Tony Trabert says something like, “That’ll take some starch outta you.”

Was in the first game at 30-30. Chris pummels a backhand down the line a half inch from baseline and the sideline . Absolutely perfect shot- the art of hitting deep . I rallied with a player at holiday park who hit almost every shot just two inches from my baseline almost every ball . On clay it was an impossible shot to attack or do much with . Tendency was to return it short which was exactly the plan - the court I found myself having to cover became suddenly immense . I later found out I was hitting with John Evert. Jimmybtheir fsther stressed hitting deep for this reason - you keep the attacking player from having an advantage of opening up your court.

Chrissie's US Open match with Garrison actually wasn't her last professional match. It was a few weeks later at the 1989 Fed Cup, where Chrissie went 5-0 in singles, with her official last pro match actually being a 6-3, 6-2 win over Conchita Martinez of Spain.

I don't care what anyone says or what the record books show. Chris Evert should be ranked in the Top 3 of every and any list of greatest female tennis players. Along with Martina. Truthfully, for me, Chris is #1 and Martina is #2 for me. There would basically be no WTA tour today without the two of them setting the standards of play the way they did.

YOU COULD NOT HIT THE BALL AS HARD WITH THE WOODEN RACKETS! Go try- you wind up and hit like Serena and the ball WILL go out by 30 feet. Today's technology is better, not the players. If you gave yesterday's champs today's rackets- they'd still be champs. If you gave today's champs yesterday's rackets- they'd be in the fetal position at the back of the court sobbing.

@@aagold76I wonder what pro tennis would look like today if they made the pro players stick to wood. Although I guess jimmy was the first to use metal T 2000. Pro baseball makes the players use wood bats instead of aluminum like college and high school can use. It's just a fact that you can hit harder farther and faster with them and they keep them out of the pros mainly to preserve the integrity of the stats. But tennis doesn't have that emphasizes ( stats) it's more wins.

@@willkittwk women's tennis needs to do something- it's been shown that the rackets today are causing a lot of the injuries they're getting- you'd think they'd want to preserve their players- they keep getting hurt and the women's field at every major is a travesty- you could throw a dart and have a better chance of predicting the winner than going by rankings. That’s an oversimplification because in the late 80s you had Graf who certainly hit with power. However, even before that with the change in racquet technology, the pace of shot increased dramatically. You can see that in this clip in the ‘83 match with Navratilova.

@@fong03 You definitely speak the truth. Technology has REALLY changed the women's and men's game of tennis. Better rackets. Better shoes. Better material for clothing. @@andyroo9381 Absolutely. The court surfaces have changed too. They are all almost universally slower, even the grass at Wimbledon. The balls are fluffier and lighter as well. This makes the game much more suited to aggressive baseliners and allows for better defense as well. If Martina or any of the other GOATs were born in this era, they would also hit with the incredible pace we see in this era.
