It's such a treat to see these 356s being raced. My dad bought a 1955 Pre-A in the 70s, a former racecar that did many laps at Laguna Seca. He got challenged frequently along the PCH (once while I was in the backseat, I remember standing up and waving to the guy through the rear windscreen, lol). I was forced to auction it off after my dad died but I kept the Laguna Seca badge! Vids like this give me a glimpse into the life his Porsche had :)

Hell of a driver. Squirrely car with extremely narrow tires by todays standards and he managed to gain control after almost losing it. Loved watching this race

My personal favorite era for sports cars. Here in Southern CA, 356's were everywhere and cheap. By the time I could buy one, they'd all disappeared and shot up in price.

I had a 1953 Porsche. Put a 1964 SC engine with a big bore kit in it. (1800cc) It would chirp the tires in first gear with the clutch out! chirp chirp. Probably 110-120hp and about 1800 lbs.

@schwanzelstock10717 жыл бұрын
Chris Harris is also a real Porsche guy knowing how to drive these cars with the engine in the wrong place. Almost no one knows why it has the engine behind the back axle............. That is what surprises me more than these cars having the engine there. It's German stubbornness at it's best......... Thing is even today it's still because of the VW beetle and these weird Germans just not willing to change it! ( Also has to do with Porsche marketing a real way later) Porsche has a back engine, cant almost believe there are people calling it a mid engine car but believe me there are, there are actually way to many thinking its a mid engine car.
@truthseeker84837 жыл бұрын
Actually having the engine back there does have some benefits...Good traction becuase of the weight over the driving wheels and weight transfer. Engine noise and heat is left behind. A more aerodynamic front. Less transmission power losses. Porsche did pretty well in racing with them.......

Enormous balls of Chris Harris must be unfair extra weight ballast. Look at that massive oversteer at 2:30. That was hell of a brown-code moment.
@rafaelceottomusic6918 Жыл бұрын
Definetly. You can't even think about braking in a moment like that. The weight would transfer to the front, making the car spin out.

0:54 - A little too much of a good thing, the oversteer robbed the Porsche 356 of speed in the corners with most being taken with some opposite lock to restore stability - and this from a car that is undoubtedly lowered. At least the apparent lack of castor made winding on opposite lock easier. The Jaguar XK120 had the merest whiff of high-speed oversteer which assisted with the turn-in, and getaway.

Nice race. Driver of ythe 356 could have hit the apex and gone faster. Also swapping a set of racing tires makes total sense.

71nortcomm 71nort you really haven't got a clue have you! Under braking the car is unstable so he is correcting the oversteer due to the weight of the engine at the back.

He's running on skinny Dunlop historic racing tyres which have very little grip. It'll be using 500L/15 tyres which are only 120mm wide.

You can't race at this event unless your car is authentic period specification...It's extremely hard to get on the grid at Goodwood (you can't buy your way in, you have to be invited!!) The four cam engine from the 550 was used 'in period' in competition 356's and over the years these had between 110-135hp. This car has the original drum brakes, suspension and Dunlop historic racing tyres. (the same as the rest of the grid)

I race a VW Beetle in historic touring car racing in the UK and although the car only came from factory with 30hp, Beetles were circuit raced (in the 1960's) with over three times that power output, so why would a car used in historic racing today have to be (like you believe) factory stock?
@fretingtopolice8 жыл бұрын
Because if it quacks like a duck its a duck
@ianbrown90828 жыл бұрын
In the UK ALL Historic Race Cars have a "Historic Technical Passport" This passport lists all the modifications allowed on that specific car by historic regulations, this has to be handed to an eligibility scrutineer before each race who will check the technical specification of the car, If the car strays from the regulations, the car won't be allowed to race! If a modification is proven to have been used 'in period' it can be used in historic racing today....If you're gonna make comments about a video, stick to a subject you know something about!
