What happens when you force communities, families and entire ecosystems to kneel before the dictates of the marketplace? You get what Chris Hedges, co-author with Joe Sacco of Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt, calls "sacrifice zones." From Appalachia to North Dakota to Camden, New Jersey, these zones, ravaged by the excesses of capitalism, prefigure our collective future.

Cory Beatbox I was talking with a guy in SE Asia a fews years ago. There was poverty all round us and the occasional Flash of a grotesque wealth in the form of a top of the range European sports car etc. He explained that these flashes of wealth are glimpses of the immense local power wielded in every walk of life by the local 'in-group' ie Mafia. He then explained that everyone is against the Mafia until one is invited inside. Chris Hedges is NOT for sale but the the politicians judges and state employees in the USA are already bought. To me the Democrats are the more vile; a bunch of mealy-mouthed virtue signallers. Jimmy Dore is being vilified now by the lefty bloggers and utubers because he is exposing their fakery.

And his talent for grasping such bleak outlooks and his ability to hold to them long enough without killing himself over such a terrible coming future of pain and suffering of innocent people, good, beautiful, and wonderful humans expecting so little but giving so much of themselves even working several jobs for their families. Really is so sad.

+stephane lauzon actually in the modern sense yes. Yet the roots of fascism go way beyond Franco, Musollini, Nazi Party, Sorel and 20th century. It has existed in many fangled forms in many parts of the world. An example of hindu-fascism is almost 1000years old. Where-in the so called sacred texts define the order of men according to skin color [varna] and further the status of men being higher than all, women and animals fell into a subsequent and ghastly value system.

What do you mean with _"concept"_ of unfettered capitalism? Unfettered capitalism, i.e. free-market capitalism unhindered by effective regulation, is a reality, not a concept. And it isn't "intruiging" so much as scary.

chris Are people like you really this clueless or just dedicated liars whose aim is to blame capitalism/free-markets for the failures of central-planning? I ask because, in the USA, there are literally 100,000's of laws and regulations in existence…governing bodies at the federal, state, and local levels exert enormous control (via these laws/regs as well as via significant tax and wealth re-distribution policies) over the economy and flows of money…none of this is hidden info or hard to understand. To call what exists today "unfettered free-market capitalism" is either the height of ignorance or an intentional effort to promote falsehoods about freedom…so, are you ignorant or just a liar?

@@chioma3100 That's pretty much where I'm at too. It sure looks bleak, though. I don't think many people are aware that the federal government has decided that disabled people should be able to get by on $791/month (SSI). Without explanation, as soon as my SSDI benefits started in February, they sent me a letter saying they were docking me down to $720/mo until April 2020. The section where it was supposed to explain the reason was completely blank, literally. And there's nothing I can do; They hold all the power. I get a whopping $39 in snap, too. What a feast. With no family to lean on, much less live with and share expenses with, I now know first-hand that the despair Chris Hedges describes is 100% accurate. Independent media and the Progressive movement gives me hope, though. I know things can be different, and that we've got people. ✊ I don't know your situation, but I genuinely hope you catch a break and you're able to turn things around. Every time I went to my office I walked past a splendid new library, the Sackler library, funded by money made from the opiates that have devastated so much of the US. If one of the oldest most venerable universities in the world sells out like that, what hope is there for any of them? I can still barely believe it.

Chris Hedges has a rare quality in his virtue+integrity that just made me cry for a minute. It's very rare. I don't know that I agree with him on all fronts, but who can deny that he is a very intelligent man that strives to follow a path with a heart. Society is secondary to parenting. Below all of these social problems is the fact that 99% of parents have no care regarding the establishment of children they create into a life of happiness. And that is the sole responsibility of bringing children into this world. Nothing else matters because all else follows. It is not a responsibility of others to provide for the happiness of your children. If you can't do it, don't make them. That is where men like Hedges fail, IMHO. Everyone is trying to fix society, when they can't even fix themselves.

The problem is not the government, or the corporate state, it's the people. The people have been brainwashed. We have all the power, but we refuse to stand together against this tyranny of the corporate state. The richest man in the country is lauded as the greatest example to us all by a huge number of people, rich and poor alike. People just aren't interested in helping eachother. We're interested in popular rethoric and owning eachother. Movements against our collective interests are more popular than fighting for an economy that works for us all.

There is in place an American Stasi, the Patriot Act opened the door for such an organization. It is modeled after the East German Stasi and there is no problem finding recruits. A democracy would find little use for such, however an authoritarian regime would find it invaluable for containment and control. There is the added effect of the shredding of trust that helps to break down society. It is in place and has been for some time. 24/7 internet and phone.

For decades, I have seen this country as a freight train, going off a cliff. It's happening in slow motion, rather like the frog in boiling water comparison (although the frog actually has the presence to jump out). Heard today that urban areas tend to be democrats, and rural, uneducated people tend towards being republican. There you have it, that break. The key word here is UNEDUCATED. But, how do we stop this freight train? By being united. By rising up, as one voice. By being WOKE. It's in corporate best interests to be divided, and infighting keep us from any constructive solidarity. Television is the great divider, and it's owned by corporate billionaires.

You never know when an underground revolt is building towards a tipping point because people have had enough, a tipping point of sorts, now at the end of 2014, we seem to be approaching a tipping point. I believe any attempt at a violence based revolution would very probably be mercilessly crushed and would be counterproductive to the overall goal of a peaceful and socially just world. The current system has to be made 'obsolete' by non-violent means.

MasterofPlay7 I wouldn't be so sure. New developments in technology will allow for universal abundance. Artificial scarcity will be a thing of the past. Peace, freedom, creativity and abundance for all!

Mutualist you are way too optimistic about the future... look at what human did to the environment, we are seeing sever weather condition around the globe, people are killing each others, riot and protest...

Mutualist We won't get out of the mess by technology only. First we have to honour the planet as a living whole. Universal abudance has always been part of the planet, there have always been cultures knowing how to enjoy it. But now we have "western monoculture" destroying everything in its way. MasterofPlay7 This kind of pessimism is media-made. Ppl. are raising all over the world and "...we shall overcome". Never give up on the goals Mutualist has named peace, abudance and freedom for all.

G. Jürgens no the society we are having is base on cheat, rape, and steal, as long as it works, and it has worked for thousands of years; there's no need for change. Any kind of idealism is a lie, no one will care unless they got fed, and people are having fun killing and destroying each other, is all part of human nature, and growth will only occur under such circumstances (see how the developing nations surpassing the developed nations? Cuz we are living our lives too comfortably)

11:16 - Flanders says: "Maybe this country isn't fit for the sort of democracy we need to get out of this mess. Maybe this is its destiny." Shudder. Have to admit, this is the nightmare I've been having for decades. The endless forced march of those who have been marginalized by systemic, deliberately engineered poverty has prevented us from rearing up on our hind-legs en masse. We NEED to band together, now more than ever before. Let's get this show on the road, people!

If you want to really weaken the state and the ability of large corporations to hold sway, you need to heavily invest in technologies that can make individuals get their life essentials from domestic sources e.g power and water, 3D printing etc.

lookup 'the weathermen', or watch 'the weather underground'..we already know the grim forecast, we need a system of action equally as radical as the quasi-political corporation that this nation has devolved into..history doesn't repeat itself, but it does tend to rhyme..

Mussolini said a better word for fascism is corporatism. In his Italy the corporations had the right to vote, not the citizens. Our system goes through the pretense of voting and the politicians are bought. It's a roundabout way of doing the same thing.

When I consider the percentage of 1st world humans who will watch this I despair. Then I consider the percentage of those who watched with the vocabulary to comprehend. Then I consider the percentage of those people with the intestinal fortitude to get out of the lazyboy and do something about it. Then I have to consider how many of THOSE are wealthy enough to even drop a pebble in the pond, let alone drain the swamp against their own self interest... Well... If you've read this far you're smart enough to see the writing on the wall. Hug your kids.
