Today's inflation is a result of corporate avarice, not only problems with the supply chain. We know that the money obtained by the higher prices isn't being transmitted along the supply chain since businesses are reporting record profits. More pricing result in increased revenue for businesses, which stays with them and goes into their pockets. We can rule out supply-related inflation because of this. If your stocks are extremely weak, now is an excellent opportunity to take a battered 401k and convert it to a Roth. Then, your Roth will be tax-free, and you will just have to pay taxes on the substantially reduced current values.

Some economists have projected that both the U.S. and parts of Europe could slip into a recession for a portion of 2023. A global recession, defined as a contraction in annual global per capita income, is more rare because China and emerging markets often grow faster than more developed economies. Essentially the world economy is considered to be in recession if economic growth falls behind population growth.

We are already in the big crash, Inflation is a catastrophe. This CPI report is a colossal failure. To bring the housing market to a halt, the FED will have to pull all the stops. The unfortunate issue is that other markets are being decimated. If you want to stay green, you have to rely on a lot of diversification. Currently up 14% and being careful. Still a better deal than leaving it in a savings or checking account yielding 0-1 percent interest.

Inflation is gradually going to become part of us and due to that fact any money you keep in cash or in a low-interest account declines in value each year. Investing is the only way to make your money grow and unless you have an exceptionally high income, investing is the only way most people will ever have enough money to retire.

BRICS seeks to create a new currency, considering gold's historical role as a store of value and medium of exchange. However, the functionality and acceptance of a gold-backed currency in the current global financial system are uncertain. Creating a new currency requires careful consideration of economic, political, and logistical factors.

The discussions and proposals surrounding BRICS nations' potential use of gold are intriguing. People choose to buy gold for various reasons, such as its historical role as a store of value and medium of exchange, its potential as a hedge against inflation or currency devaluation, and its relative scarcity compared to other commodities. Gold also offers diversification benefits to investment portfolios due to its low correlation with stocks and bonds. However, investing in gold carries risks and may not be suitable for everyone. Investors should carefully evaluate their objectives, risk tolerance, and financial situation before deciding.

All of the advice in the comments below are just plain stupid. I already am poor. My working class family for three generations strugbled to get a leg up in this rich country. You see, this is a rich country for the privileged not for the huge number of salaried workers who can never make ends meet and are guaranteed to stay that way. Why, you ask? Well because the purpose of every single business in a capitalist system is to make profit. The more profit the better. Salaries are always going to be held down to make the employer more profit. It's the system. Most people cannot beat the system. You need money to make money. We live in an advanced kind of economic serfdom. We'll, actually, we live in an entirely feudal system in a way. Some are privileged and live lives we cannot conceive except that we see it on television. They are the employers, the 1%. If someone is born into a class where opportunity is available to start a business or gain a skill it is possible to live above the poverty or near poverty line. But that isn't for everyone. How many brilliant people never had a chance to advance? I know quite a few. Those of us who had no financial and class headstart can compete with every other similarly unendowed person for a very few scholarships. It's not possible for every person to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. So there is a guaranteed class that always is at bottom and can't get out if the class to which we we're born. And there are a whole lot if us. Oh, how about the middle class? Yep, there is one but it's shrinking. The system wobbles. Every so often there is a bubble, a recession, an inflation or a war that pulls the rug from beneath the middle class. Each generation after the end of WWII has been less secure and fewer people have been able to participate in the "American Dream." The middle class is not only not growing it is diminishing. Those of us who did all the right things and still at the end of our life live in abject poverty, barely eating and paying high rents to wealthy corporate elites don't appreciate throwaway comments not backed by facts. In fact, it makes us want to organize to change system.

Michael Hudson is another great resource. In the early 70s he very accurately described the Financial Colonialism of the US, to the point that CIA agents read it to learn what to do better. Financialism has made the US deindustrialize as it's been more profitable for major corporations to outsource and play with debt. He now says we're in the late stages of financialism; every society based on it, including Ancient Greece, eventually collapses because it requires an endless new supply of new victims. Russia committed the unpardonable sin of standing up for its own interest.

GFW Hegel, The Philosophy of History, “What experience and history teaches us is that people and governments have never learned anything from history, or acted on principles deduced from it.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), 1936: ‘We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace - business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.’ "Financialism" is used to create and excuse the various Ponzi financial bubbles. This parallels the US claim of superiority, of the 'indispensable nation'. Any mixed government-private business economy, like Europe, is an existential enemy of these claims. Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), 1936: "They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob. Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me - and I welcome their hatred."

@@jimcarrington6744 Covid supply chain issues are hardly a part of the current US inflation, but a part nevertheless. Biden kick started inflation on day one by shutting down oil exploration on all federal lands and costal waters, this accounts for a significant portion. To follow that Biden and his congress pushed two multi trillion dollar bills through that are 90% blind spending bills with little to no effect on either Covid recover and inflation reduction. The last being the most laughable of all- 13 trillion dollars to reduce inflation- it actually contributes to inflation. Open borders is causing more government spending which is being diverted from dozens of programs and intuitions to hide the spending, and its taking low and unskilled jobs while pushing wages down. So if that wasn’t bad enough Biden decide to buy gas from Russia paying a premium, and then Venezuela. He then sold US oil to China at a loss, and the icing on the cake he go a page from Obama’s book and raided the strategic oil reserve to push pff egg ices down - all of which is government spending and driving inflation. There’s more, but you get the point.

The 15% drop of the yen and the inflation overseas guarantees increased costs. And it’s happening

The willful non-understanding of Russia's cogent reasons for its current military operation in Ukraine have created an endless black tunnel down which the Europeans in particular have entered and continue to travel down. This tunnel is leading ever closer to the economic collapse of these European economies, a collapse it appears they are unlikely to emerge from for at least a generation. Meanwhile, Russia is building toward next year when it is expected it will begin to achieve economic growth once more having recovered in robust fashion from all the western attempts to destroy it economically. This while resolving forever the thorny question of NATO on its doorstep.

8:30 I AM THAT PERSON! During pandemic, people wanted to save money and instead of buying new Vespas, that started fixing old ones and even thought out service department went BOOM, parts suppliers were inconsistent, and a lot of people had to wait a long time… These people would constantly call us, badger us and show up at our office asking when things would be done (which consequently took up enormous time) It got to the point that we hired more people, Just to deal with the surge of people constantly asking “are we there yet? Are we there yet?” With this new influx of service clients, we had thought we hit a gold mine, but it turned out to be a Trojan horse. Before the pandemic, 80% of our clientele were women. While the men were at work, the wives and girlfriends would drop the vehicle off for service and they didn’t have many questions. They would just say “it’s broke, please fix it“ and so we would… when pandemic hit, all the sudden, men had extra time and they would be the ones dropping off their vehicles, but unlike women, they wanted to be more hands-on, ask a bunch of questions, be involved in the repair process, and waste a significant amount of our time to the point we had to hire more people… they also turned out to be highly impatient, aggressive and unreasonable. When things didn’t work out how they wanted it to, the men would thrash out in anger, threaten lawsuits, and show up unnanounced demanding to pick up their vehicles in mid-repair, after we had already ordered ordered expensive parts on their behalf. In short, they were the WORST CLIENTS WE HAD EVER SEEN. People would quit on account of our male customers verbal abuse, andexperienced high turnover so the only option was to raise prices. As it turns out, other businesses (including our part suppliers) were experiencing similar issues and they had to raise their prices too. Which also made us have to increase our prices again. And with all these guys running around trying to get things fixed rather than buy new devices vehicles, that created supply chain shortage. So I disagree with Richard. The supply chain really messed everything up and it was all linked to an influx of male clients not knowing how to coexisting and be good patrons.

I appreciate this colorful story but nothing you mentioned disproves anything Dr Wolff has said. In your particular case you had supply chain issues but that is not the usual cause of price increases. The vast majority of price increases AKA inflation is simply caused by various companies who supply services and goods choosing to raise their prices simply because they want to. They just want to- they want to make more profit their business and they're going to try to raise their prices as much and as often as they can. If they think they can get away with it of course they're going to try to raise them. Especially in countries where there are no price controls AKA regulation from the government, like the US.

I think Dr. Wolff over simplified the employers just put up prices.... it seemed at a whim, which he rolled back later. For a small business there are costs, and you need to make some margin of profit/ get paid, exist. If costs go up, there is only so much the business can absorb. This story cuts to ereality. Quality, talking, chasing up supply, ... all adds to costs. Hence the roll on fx.

In my humble opinion, the Nixonian price controls were so successful that the oligarchs had to devise a counter strategy to prevent future use and they were very successful at it. They funded think tanks to take control of economic thought. Thus the rise of Milton Freedman and the Chicago school of economics. Monetarism took over every school teaching economics. “Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon in the sense that it is and can be produced ONLY by a more rapid increase in the quantity of money than in output.” This mind set completely and purposefully excludes all the other causes of general price increases. It absolved the federal government from responsibility and placed all the responsibility on the twelve member banks that form the FED. Price controls were thus effectively neutralized because the only tool the FED has is the FED fund rates. The blunt instrument of using the forces of recession to push down demand and tame inflation. Much to the delight of the oligarchs this method also served to squelched labor rates.

Seems to me the monetary factor affects asset prices; items that are not included in the "inflation shopping basket" such as the price of fish. Bond prices, followed by stock prices respond to quantitative easing. House prices respond to low interest rates, followed by private sector money creation via the process of writing mortgages. Prices of consumable goods, both discretionary and non discretionary, respond to shortages and the cost of inputs. Thus the "inflation shopping basket" measures price rises and the resulting reduction in standard of living absent monetary expansion

@@jonthomas9708 That my friend is a great observation. I would add that because the dollar is the world currency a major portion of the increased money supply (QEs) flows out of the domestic bucket and into the world bucket. The QE dollars funded a lot of China's and India's expansions. IMHO money supply is a minor influence on inflation with the potential to be a major influence if mishandled, but we haven't seen any of that yet. Hyperinflation will be a worldwide problem rather than a domestic problem when the world bucket fills up. CPI is a ball park inflation indicator necessary because adding all the inflationary/deflationary forces is simply overwhelming. Money supply is nowhere in the CPI calculations.

@@donklee3514 Big and little ticket items funded by credit card & home equity withdrawal support the value of the yuan and end up as dollar deposits at the Fed to the credit of the Chinese central bank. The Chinese central bank chooses to exchange it's idle dollars for US Treasury bonds, keeping the US economic wheel turning. The militarily enforced use of the dollar by other nations for the foundational commodity (oil) maintains the demand & thereby the value of the dollar. The petrodollar system is in process of unravelling with Saudi moving toward a bigger bully + Russia (& Iran?) locked out of the dollar settlement system. MMT, the pernicious economic cult that I despise, (honorably mentioned in Claus Schwabbs boring book btw) is only really valid for the exeptional circumstances of the USA. One hears of "exporting inflation". As long as China invests in productive capacity & maintains the value of the yuan for the purchase of inputs. In this sense Chinese borrowing, public and private, for infrastructuture and manufacturing improvement is counter inflationary. For all the US goverment borrowing I hear that the US railway system is creaking and shabby and the highways are at capacity. Neo-classical economic orthodoxy opposes Government investment and economic planning however the US version of planning is for massive investment in global soft power backed by an enormous military. It seems to still be kinda working - holding up domestic demand whilst Ukranian conscripts and chumps from around the west are volunteering to fight and pay the price.

@@jonthomas9708 "Big and little ticket items funded by credit card & home equity withdrawal support the value of the yuan and end up as dollar deposits at the Fed to the credit of the Chinese central bank." This sentence/idea needs a little more development. The relationship is a little vague for consumer debt to a yuan relationship. One of my favorite questions for econ professors is when a market crashes where do all the dollars go? The answer is usually something like nowhere or some distraction to avoid the question. Millions or Billions of currency used to drive the market up to bubble status simply vanish from the money supply. An inconvenient truth to a monetarist that believes there is a direct relation between money supply and inflation at the macro level. IMHO, market crashes are deflationary at the micro level and are but a minor component of inflation at the macro level. Heresy you say. Only if you believe without questioning relying on faith and faith alone. Millions or Billions of currency and the value the currency represents vanishing without causing deflation at the macro level seems to indicate otherwise. The same can be said for all the asset classes. I would propose that the so-called business cycles act as a relief valve removing excess value and currency from the money supply. I know more heresy, but it does open up the possibility that 40 trillion in debt can exist without causing inflation. The currency over time was removed, but the debt that spurred its creation remains. Just food for thought.

Great chat.... The thing that is different today to the beginning of the 20th century is our energy sources are about to tip over into scarcity. I can't help but think this major seismic shock will be the tipping point throwing our societies into chaos. I'm reminded of the description that Joseph Tainter wrote in his book Collapse how society choose to fail or succeed , when he described the Vikings trying to colonize Greenland. The Vikings had a viable culture thriving in the same landscape that had been there for thousands of years, but they refused to adapt new ways of living holding onto their cultural ways and died as a result . I suspect our societies will, in a similar fashion, refuse to adapt to the circumstances and also die as a result. I simply don't believe our leadership has the ability to embrace any form of collectivism any more, maybe in pockets , here and there, but the dominant overarching cultural norms will see people go down with the ship rather than adapt ...

You either work at a factory 6 days a week, 12 hour shifts OR you work at a chain retail/grocery store for minimum wage and 10-15 hours a week. The company lets us know weekly that we are expendable to them and there is always a long line of applicants who'll take the position if you so much as complain. They dont care about their workers, they rule by fear and toss you out like trash for minor mistakes.

Another very interesting conversation. Richard couldn't have said it any better. Corporation PROFITS in 2019 were 1.3 trillion and increased to 2,1 trillion in 2003. In three years corporation profits have increased 50% in 3 years. Have You had a 50% wage increase in 3 years, I haven't. The true cause of inflation corporation greed, price fixing, gouging, by retail monopolies, oil, etc.

Interesting , a number of the most eminent market experts have been expressing their views on the severity of the impending economic downturn and the extent to which equities might plummet. This is because the economy is heading towards a recession and inflation is persistently above the Federal Reserve's 2% target. As I'm aiming to create a portfolio worth no less than $850,000 before I turn 60, I would appreciate any advice on potential investments.

I've been in touch with a financial advisor ever since I started my business. Knowing today's culture The challenge is knowing when to purchase or sell when investing in trending stocks, which is pretty simple. On my portfolio, which has grown over $900k in a little over a year, my adviser chooses entry and exit orders.

After he mentioned wage and price controls I was ready to change the channel, but I was busy so I didn’t. How he explains rationing makes some sense, but I wouldn’t trust our current government to distribute cards fairly. In fact I would be surprised if they DID do it fairly. And that would be the same with Trump as POTUS as well. He also makes a simple point about manufacturers raising prices which I thought was silly at first. But I guess that’s true. We talk about companies passing along price increases to their customers, but they can do a number of things: eat the cost and reduce profit, raise prices proportionally and not change bottom line, raise prices and pay workers more keeping profit constant, or raise prices and give those profits to their shareholders. Unfortunately, it is now unlawful (if I understand this correctly) for a company NOT to maximize profit to shareholders. This is highly immoral. We NEED a new understanding of the Corporation, as the current one is/has destroyed this country.

Inflation is not cause by rising prices, it is the effect of artificial expansion of the money supply, like the $5 trillion upward tranfer of wealth in 2020 et al. Inflation is, and has always been a monetary phenomenon. You even inadvertently acknowledge that yourself!! 25:27 Use to look up to this guy. Still love Chris Hedges.

It has been a great discussion, but it is false to believe that Hitler had a 'little black moustache' and was not blue-eyed. He had intense blue eyes and his moustache was auburn. Depersonalizing Hitler does not win converts to the authentic social and economic democracy faction.

The market and the Fed consistently underestimate the sticky nature of inflation. The markets are still unsure if the Federal Reserve will continue to its plan to raise interest rates until inflation is under control, despite the fact that bond yields are rising while stock prices are falling. What is the greatest strategy to take advantage of the current bear market while I'm still deciding whether to sell my $401k worth of stocks?

Even though there will probably be more pain in the future, investors should look for stocks like Royal Philips NV and Alstom SA that have been sufficiently battered down to be a bargain or get a great portfolio manager.
