Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges is the author of 11 books, including the bestsellers War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, Empire of Illusion, and Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt. For nearly two decades he was a foreign correspondent in some of the world’s most dangerous and impoverished places (including ones in America), earning wide acclaim for his eloquent and informative stories about the international war on terror, income inequality, and a host of other issues. A senior fellow at The Nation Institute in New York, Hedges currently writes a weekly column for Truthdig. His new book investigates the psychological and social factors that foment resistance against monolithic institutions.

When I listen to Chris Hedges, all of a sudden I feel like I'm transported back to Paris or Vienna in the early 1900's, when ideas, conversation, intellect, and civility were celebrated, instead of ridiculed, called unAmerican, dismissed as 'Woke,' or even spoke about by 'enemies of the people.' Chris Hedges isn't afraid to mention Karl Marx, or Gandhi, or Patrick Henry, or even Malcolm X in the same sentence. Chris Hedges knows that the 'proletariat' have been dumbed-down, fed a diet of violence, sex, phony religion, racism, classism, Zionism, militarism, and anti-Islam enculturation and indoctrination over the course of their lives. The eagerness in which everyone is so eager for war, reminds me of Pre-World War One.

I AGREE WITH YOU 100%. WE AS A PEOPLE HAVE BEEN LIE TO DUMBED-DOWN, BY THE WACKOS WHO RUN THE WORLD AND THE COUNTRY. I REALLY BELIEVE WE LIVE ON A PRISON PLANET AS ALEX JONES SO EXPLAINED. CHRIS HEDGES PUT IDEAS IN IT'S PROPER PERSPECTIVE. AND LAYS A FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD AND THIS COUNTRY. IT IS DEEM GOINGS, NOT BRIGHT AT ALL. WE AS A NATION CAN NO LONGER ELECT CRIMINALS TO OFFICES OF THIS NATION. I FOR ONE DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE ELITE SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT. WE CAN'T A FORD TO HAVE THE RICH RULING THE COUNTRY, BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIVE IN OUR (THE MONEY LESS PEOPLE) REALITY, THEY DO NOT CONNECT WITH THE REAL WORKING STIFF IN THIS COUNTRY. THERE GREED HAS TAKEN OVER THEIR LIVES, NO MATTER THE COST. THE POLICE AND MAYORS AND GOVERNORS OF THE STATES HAVE BECOME PEACE NICKS AND VERY SOFT WHERE ANYTHING GOES. I AM AN OLD HIPPIE FROM THE SIXTY'S SO IAM NOT AGAINST PEACE NICKS IN GENERAL. BUT YOU HAVE TO PROTECT THE LAWFUL CITZENS. THERE HOMES AND BUSINESSES, AND ON THE FLIP SIDE OF THE COIN WE NEED TO START TEACHING KIDS HOW TO THINK. NOT WHAT TO THINK. ONE LOVE ONE PEACE.

Yet Gandhi and Malcom X are not the same. Forget Marx. One was a hindu politician, who deeply held unto the roots of apartheid and inequality but appeared to be the Father of Nation, who embraced non-violence. The other was an african american, radical outspoken leader of sorts, inciting violence. Yet both were gunned down by people of their own country. Both were religious orthodox.

Thank you Chris hedges, I have been woke in the last 2 years of trump. Quick story talking with my 15 yr old daughter about going to a trade school or what is after high school she replied “mom I really don’t want to talk about this right now the climate is done we have 17 months before it’s over, so I would really like to spend the time with the ppl I love and live for moment” as she was sobbing the entire time. I don’t know where she got her figured but the moment shook me, imagine being the generation of no hope and as a parent I had no answers, besides let’s go protest and resist.

CHACHEEZE CHEESY Its sad indeed that the generations to come have been bombarded with LIES and propaganda about the world coming to an end.. you probably don’t remember, you may be too young but if you were around I think it was the 40’s or 50’s, the world was cooling and "we were headed straight to the next ice age"..you should look up the Corbett report about "climate change" and joe cross ..Just search those words and hopefully that will inspire you to do some more research and dig a little deeper to unmask the "climate change" agenda..so you’re able to restore hope back into your daughter and hopefully educate her about how sometimes nefarious people have an agenda and enough money and influence to lie to the whole world.. As for Chriś, I cringe every time I hear him mention climate change and always wonder what his motives are behind bringing it up..

It was in the 70s when a small group of scientists predicted a period of global cooling due to the orbital cycles of the earth. This sort of period has been documented in history when the European settlements elements in Greenland collapsed. This predicted period of cooling has been overridden by the scale of human influence on the world. You seem to believe a small group of scientists that promote your world view while disregarding a much larger group of scientists who do not promote your views as liars. You are correct that people should do their own research. If they do they will find that you Jenna have not done a good job of exploring the information on the climate crisis.

@@davegriff4900 the siberian forests in the far north east of Russia have been on fire since the summer of 2018, go look it up. Last winter researchers found that the melted and dried-out permafrost was burning still in the winter, 20 feet and more underground. The russian government ignored the fires for the first year and a half because fires were burning over tens of thousands of acres, and they felt it was too big to tackle, but last year they had to act because the fires were staying alight all winter - they could not extinguish them, they knew, but they hoped to stop their spread - without success. The climate satellites are showing that in spite of considerable reductions in our vehicle and industrial CO2 emissions, in the last ten years in the northern hemisphere, atmospheric CO2 continues to increase, and is accelerating. Average temperatures at the pole are 5C / 9F above where they were in the 70s, peak summer air temperatures are in the 70s Fahrenheit, 50F above what they were in the 70s The greenland ice sheet is losing billions of tons of ice (cubic miles) every year. When one tenth of it is lost, New York city and Florida will be more than 3feet underwater permanently. Go look up the fires and learn something, and give up spouting the lies you have been fed.

I HOPE CHRIS HEDGES WILL SEE THIS. This video goes back to 2019, so who will still read the comments? I tend to avoid long videos as I have to fit them into my day. Once I fell asleep at my computer and the videos just go oin from one to the next. I woke up to the miracle of an eloquen poetic speech by a man who knows everything, so I love him as I do Rosa Luixemburg. Another interesting figure in the past is John Ruskin. He decided at about the same time as Marx that he had to investigate the ecomnomics underlying the arts. Like Marx, he made mince meat of the established economists. Ruskin accepted capitalism but added that its only function should be to produce human riches and that if it multiplied itself for its own sake we were in the shit - the last word is mine.

Accept its Antifa and BLM and other leftest re writing history. BLM and Antifa are corporate tools destroy common people’s livelihoods. The 1619 project a complete rewrite of history. Female Candidate for VP praising a person who sexually assaulted a woman claiming she was proud of him because he was shot after resisting arrest. And Hedges has demonized the ChristiN right because they are against the whole sale slaughter of babies. Why not be ones words for people who advocated the death of babies up to Nine months and after bring born or even partial birth. Sure become a vegan and purchase all the corporate processed foods and imported foods. Purchasing local and grass fed or local farm raised meat does not destroy the world. Learn your science animals are essential to maintain life on this planet. Lots of vegans eat corporate process foods. Up until recently Hedges worked for the wealthy elite. Yes and most people who end up on death row are poor. It’s is a shame that the black gang and drug dealers are not there also . “The system”. Did not create those people. Plenty of people from poor neighborhoods do not choose to murder, rape , steal, and deal drugs. The victim propaganda he peddles is discussing. He is doing just fine in this supposed evil corporate world. So clearly it is not as bad as he claims. Marx was a racist. Malcom x was no hero and was murdered by his own fellow black separatist Nation of Islam people.

Mr. Hedges has a real moral viewpoint, and that is to be applauded. But his analysis of class in American society is of the most banal and vulgar kind. It is based more on attitude than on a real consideration of the historically contingent circumstances on which America is based. You can't slap European realities wholesale onto American political development, nor European programs onto American systems of governance. You can't slap European Green environmentalism on top of a class analysis and think all the pieces are going to meld. The needs of the average working person don't necessarily mix with the concerns of bourgeois intellectuals. In the end, his prescriptions involve a mass adoption of radical ideology, rather than the incremental evolution of society in all of its sectors into a greater consciousness of our commonality, into a greater recognition that democracy is the best methodology around which to structure society. Lefties in the US are sadly drawn to the revolutionary romanticism of the early Marx, to the simplistic division of all politics into good and evil, heroes and demons. That's why they burn out so quickly and sell themselves to the marketplace, soothing their hurts with material pursuits. Even Michael Harrington ended up with a more consensus building, incremental approach to progressive reform. Change through the evolutionary process of small pressures, through the public choosing change rather than that forced from above. Democracy arrives when people learn how to do it.

I have scene that many of the so called progressives are not really willing to do the work for “change”. Their idea of change is “ I want”. I do not know how to get it and I do not want to sacrifice for it either. So someone else do it for me or I throw a tantrum.

This lecture starts on a bum note, where in the introduction, religious faith is depicted as a virtue, not the delusion it, in reality is. Calling Sam Harris 'hapless' is just a a very dumb and silly comment. I have seen this man debate both Harris and the greatly missed and lamented Hitchens, and every time Mr Hedges got his read-end handed to him in a rather swift and pleasant manner . That all said, I agree with a lot, if not most of his points. It is just a pity that with a painful regularity, it is made out that atheists aren't coming to the same conclusions as Mr Hedges (or a Cornell West for that matter) without the illusionary help from an imagined friend.(this remark is based on his entire oeuvre of writing and several talks/lectures I watched, not just this one) It would make him a great speaker and author, if he would understand that what motivates someone to see reality as it is in society, is a of no importance at all. As it stands, I know a lot more secularists that have spoken to this and wrote to this, coming to similar conclusions. I am also not shy in admitting that the stance he takes, given his nationality and circumstances, is a brave and dangerous one. But It may be more productive to build bridges with all those who have similar views and insights, rather than kick the shins of people that would stand shoulder to shoulder with him .... Paddy

@@steppenwolf3252 It is..., since a great many of the issues he , justifiably, exposes are a direct result of the actions, mindset and stance of those he will not denounce, whatever they do. Meanwhile Hedges will keep rationalists as "the enemy" in his sights. This, while they are exactly the ones that have been warning about this for ages. I am glad he has finally 'seen some flickerings of light' , but it is a shame that he keeps insisting that he has his own "set of facts" even though they aren't factual. This is a known problem of the faithful, even when they see the detriment their stance brings forth.... they will try 'to save you...even if it kills you' Hedges expresses his disappointment that American Christians (as a general term) aren't more reasonable and will not see the error of some of their ways. He refuses, however , to recognise that it is exactly the mercantile Protestantism, taken to its extremest forms in the US, which is the exact cause of the situation he laments. And preaching 'unity' is all well and good, but this will not happen as long as the faithful refuse to understand that an open and free civilisation demands that privately held are just that...private. The very moment a step is taken to translate any part of theology to binding Law, you're already plummeting towards a theocracy. Which, at this stage, the US , de facto, is. Either the faithful truly understand that freedom of religion first and foremost means freedom from religion or the American experiment is indeed lost.... Thomas Jefferson saw this coming, but wasn't forthright or even brutal enough in his prescribments. He should be compulsory reading for everyone who holds the US nationality or anybody who claims to be a friend of the US. Paddy

@@deconry I completely agree with your assessment of his cognitive and academic capacities. His oratory skills remind me of the fire and brimstone preachings of Luther and Calvin... but on real life subjects. That is something that I can only appreciate. Now if he would only get one more small insight.... he can not live in two worlds and stay honest. It's one or the other. And for his sake I truly hope he does. We all know that sitting on a very spiky fence, no matter how noble your intentions are, will be, sooner or later, an excruciatingly painful experience.. Paddy
