CHRIS HOLMES REMEMBERING EDDIE VAN HALEN:
Los Angeles, CA: In a special bonus interview feature in the Blu Ray version of the upcoming documentary film MEAN MAN: The Story of Chris Holmes (January 15th, 2021 Cleopatra Entertainment) Holmes speaks in loving tones of his late, long-time friend and fellow guitarist Eddie Van Halen.
Says Holmes: “the one who inspired me a lot was Eddie Van Halen. You know, not as just a guitar player but just as a human being, the way he was to other people. Eddie used to borrow some of my equipment even. I had crashed a motorcycle one time and was laid up in the hospital and he came in and asked me if he could borrow my guitar for his new album (Women and Children First) I said yeah, just go by and tell my mom that I said that you could borrow it and he went over and picked it up.”
Adds Holmes’ childhood friend Jack Van Furche' “it [Holmes Ibanez Destroyer] had just that right raunch and crunch and there it is - we all hear it - it’s on the album”
MEAN MAN: The Story of Chris Holmes will be released worldwide on Digital and Home Entertainment formats on January 15th, 2021 by Cleopatra Entertainment.

Its so heartwarming to hear Eddie's friends talk about him with such love. Thank you for such a wonderful and heartfelt tribute to our King Edward. The Missus woke me up crying and for the entire day we couldn’t listen to a note of King Edward without the waterworks comin’ - so many good times with his music -it felt weird We found watching interviews with him and other kind folks like yourself paying tribute to Eddie makes it somewhat easier to bear. We literally had a day of intensely mourning. It might sound daft but Ed’s playing and attitude is hugely responsible for inspiring me to be the person I am. There’s a Bad Religion ( Punk Band ) Lyric that says it al “ Everyone you love leaves a mark on your soul, The world is a little less bright without King Edward Im fighting cancer and depression and its been especially tough with the news of Eddie’s passing but hearing all these wonderful tributes and reaction and the love and joy he brought and is bringing….makes it a tad bit easier Much love and respect! Thank you for honouring our King Edward. Eddie's music touched us so deeply because of his love for the instrument and the innovations he has done. To us, it feels like the brightest and best brother, Uncle, friend mentor you ever had is not in our realm anymore. You have Nothing but love from the rock/metal / guitarist community, respect for your tribute to EVH, Rock n Metal does not get the exposure and respect that other genres get. So, you are forever in the hearts of many a Rock / Metal / Guitar fan's hearts. Stay safe & all the best wishes to you. Watch this Video Interview and you'll see why we're hurting so much...The world is a little less bright without King Edward This is a brilliant interview if you haven’t seen it kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5OVZ3dul6eNeJo&ab_channel=Z%C3%B3caloPublicSquare most people don’t know the King Edward was a bi-racial half Asian / half white Immigrant and that his lifelong friends were the black kids who stood up for them when they came to the US. A definitive American Dream story. Eddie played the solo on Michael Jackson’s Beat it, re-arranged it so it sounded more ‘Rock’ and introduced Michael to a wider audience for free. Eddie buried Dimebag Darrell from Pantera with his original Bumblebee Guitar when Dime’s life partner Rita asked him to make a Copy Ed said “an Original deserves an Original” Vinnie Paul ( Pantera ) Dimebag’s brother says the last words his brother said to him was Van f+*in Halen’ their nightly ritual before hitting the stage. He gave Jerry Cantrell 5150 Stacks after touring with Alice In Chains and the last concert he went to was TOOL and a TOOL fan asked him to take a picture of the fan in front of Tool’s stage and he did, The fan had no idea who Ed was and Ed was chill with it. Frank Zappa loved and respected Eddie and got him to teach Dweezil who was obsessed with ED When Frank died Ed was THE 1st first to call with condolences and to offer any assistance. He did the same for Chris Cornell Guitarist Pete Thorn when Chris Passed He got Allan Holdsworth signed to Warner to introduce Allan to a wider audience He was the 1st to mod his guitars in such an extreme way chasing tone, Creating the Super Strat - Humbuckers in Strat style guitars, Waxing Pickups, Variac on his amp and did his first 2 albums with the original Fender Whammy which led to the creation of the Floyd Rose Whammy Bar. Les Paul Said Ed, him & Leo Fender are the only guys who know how to make guitars His 5150 Amp is still THE go to amp and sound of Modern metal, Gojira use the EVH 5150 His Rhythm Playing was funky, tasteful and rockin’ and his songwriting is the reason his loss is affecting grandparents, parents, kids and all ethnicities alike as Van Halen songs will live forever. He bravely and quietly fought cancer for 20 years Enjoy EVH kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmrVXoGuqr6msMk&ab_channel=Hazardteam

Dude I am right there with you . it was Eddie who made me pick up my first guitar 50 bucks for an Ibanez deluxe 59er I saved it from cutting a yard for 12dollars ..I'd spend half at skating rink and save the rest one day I came home and my sister's bf had left the guitar saying I could have it now I still had to cut grass for a while but never will I forget opening that case and looking at Eddie all over my walls and listening to fair warning over n over n over ...Man Eddie was such a genius of his time because of his LOVE of the instrument ...never did we ever see him without a smile onstage ...it's what he loved ...creating and playing ..there will never be another even close to him ...Thank God Myself and the world was witness to the bleeding of his heart from finger to fretboard thru the gift of his music ..and him as the person he was ....

There's a British rock magazine that did a story about the Micheal Jackson work . Ed brought his guitar and amp and when they miced him up , they were recording at one time he caused a fire with the recording equipment in the studio .

Something doesn't quite add up about the Ibanez Destroyer guitar story though. Doug Anderson (Van Halen museum, in this video) says Chris Holmes guitar (Ibanez Destroyer) was "one of first guitars off the boat from Japan", but if anyone noticed, there's only 1 knob on it and Eddie's Ibanez Destroyer has three knobs ! Maybe someone can explain that.
@ShadovvV
@ShadovvV 3 жыл бұрын
@robert proctor - Yeah, I get that part.. but it doesn't explain why Chris' Ibanez Destroyer only has 1 knob, but Eddie's had three. Someone said that Chris removed them and covered up the holes, although I've never heard or seen any evidence of that and it doesn't appear to be visible on the guitar. Pay attention.
@ShadovvV
@ShadovvV 3 жыл бұрын
@robert proctor - "The real story" doesn't necessarily make it true because it might not be as true as you think. The body of that guitar may not even be an actual Ibanez Destroyer from the 70's. Who's wearing a mask too tight again? Time to wake up!

That's what is always great about the DLR years of VH. Every album sounded different with the playing from Ed. The tone was Always there but he constantly changed guitars to fit different songs. The the Sammy albums ( also great), all kinda sounded the same. Almost like he had what he wanted and was good with it. I loved both era's!! I don't say one was better than the other. I just personally loved the DLR era better. RIP EVH GOAT.

I still listened to Van-Hagar only to still be able to listen to Ed. I didn't really care for Hagar's polished touch as compared to the rawness of Roth. Funnyily enough, since Ed's passing (WTF?!?!?!? I write it, but STILL CANNOT believe it!!) The only VH song that's been playing on repeat in my mind has been "Not Enough". Now, I will enjoy both eras of VH equally! I JUST WANNA HEAR EDDIE AGAIN! I cannot play my guitar since that terrible day. I pick it up, but just put it back down and walk away. Someday. Someday. Thanks for this gem vid. Wish there was just one channel playing all this stuff.

Makes sense. They did all of the Hagar albums at 5150 and I'm sure Eddie had his sound incredibly dialed in at that studio so I can see how not much would have changed over the years.

To hear it told from the folks involved along with childhood friends is priceless. I’m still in disbelief that Eddie is gone...It just doesn’t seem real. Gone far too soon. R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen become my favorite guitar player as soon as I paid atttention to him, and still is my favorite by far, but I must admit the real reason I picked up an electric guitar was seen Chris Holmes doing the guitar check in "live in the raw videos" with the randy rhoads guitar with cebra paint and the wolf screming, Chris has a unique sound and frasing. I read time ago about Chris and Eddie sharing equipment, guitars and that marshall jmp (brown sound) beutifull history, RIP Eddie Van Halen

I was 19 and asked by a W.A.S.P associate to come to a few LA gigs and watch the dressing room door, whatever else. I knew Chris as Homer (hi Homer!). Chris told me the Edward VH story (he was in hospital after breaking his back) and said EVH turned up alone, guitar in hand, talked forever and showed him a lot of tricks.. guitar lessons from Edward! I recall Chris saying how nice - and mind blowing it was, EVH having just come home from endless touring. Great to hear the story again, as I am in a few Blood Drive photos wearing my VH t shirt so who knew Blackie was pissed.. Ha. Chris take care!

Eddie and Randy were fans of each other and rivals as well, which they actually grew up down the street from one another, and competed in the local battle of the bands, and I read that it meant a great deal to Randy when he had heard that Eddie had been at the place where they were having the battle of the bands, the night that Randy's band was playing, and that Eddie made the comment about Randy, "dam he was so good, I had to go home and practice playing my guitar all night". If Eddie Van Halen says that about you, then you know you must be bad ass

I used to live down the street from Chris, gave him a couple of guitar lessons...we terrified the neighbors with my 100w stack in my living room on Baptiste ...remember Chris? we both went to La Canada high together..Chris almost didn't graduate because he spraypainted "chicks lick more dicks in '76" that was great!!...maybe we'll talk someday,...Mark Ferry

mike rose I actually got the chance to meet both Lita Ford and Chris Holmes when I had been working at a Builders Emporium in La Crescenta, Ca (between Pasadena and Burbank) when they came in looking to buy a gas powered lawnmower and a park bench. I worked there between 88-90 (good times) but can't remember exactly what year, but it was definitely them. I always knew though that Lita Ford lived in the nearby foothill community in Tujunga up on Day street. Never knew about the Chis and Eddie connection with the infamous Gibson Destroyer. Definitely one of the best tones in the VH archive.

Something doesn't quite add up about the Ibanez Destroyer guitar story told Doug Anderson (Van Halen museum) in this video. First of all, he says Chris Holmes guitar (Ibanez Destroyer) was "one of first guitars off the boat from Japan", but if anyone noticed, there's only 1 knob on it and Eddie's Ibanez Destroyer has three knobs ! Maybe someone can explain that.

During the time Eddie had Chris's guitar, he ended up modifying it, stripping off parts, etc. Ed, at the time, favored a single humbucker with only a volume pot.

Well, considering who EVH was and his technical skills even at his relitivy unknown level at the time, I would have NEVER expected him to be friends with Chris H of a band called WASP with the way they looked at their beginnings anf the music they tended to write. And I never knew that VH and QR were competitors with each other. I have to assume that Randy Rhoads was the guitarist at that time. For fucks sake, Ive been a VH fan since VHII times, just before WACF came out and these are stories I have never ever knew. I love them.

Fairly recently there's audio released of Randy Rhoads giving a guitar lesson and the student wanted to know a VH song. It's pretty interesting.
