Has anyone thought of giving the man atop the car a paintball gun for crowd control. Will there be collateral damage? Yes. Of course there will be, but I believe the price is justifiable for the safety of the athletes.

99% time nothing happens. Uphill nothin really bad can happen anyway. Apart from that: The riders love the crowds. Imagine the feeling, you are going all out to win a grand tour up this hill against super strong opponents. You get this tunnel feeling through the crowds. It is incredibly motivating.

Hahah! The comments here are soooo funny! Horner's never been involved in any doping scandals and was always known as a great climber even in his later pro years. He was well respected in the pros but wasn't a real GC contender because he was more of a climbing domestique for his teams. What's unique about Horner is he was one of those rare riders that grimaced in the form of a smile. So it always looked like he was smiling from ear to ear when he was suffering like a dog on the mountain. Nevertheless this performance was one of the most epic rides in the history of professional cycling. Some still swear he was doped up to the gills but as with unusual feats there will always be skeptics. Eventually there will be another 40+ year old rider to win a Grand Tour with great climbing and he will be accused of doping too.

7:55 ...nice move by Horner to use the breakaway he caught here to put a gap on Nabali - he scoots past them on the side, and then the breakaway group kind of psychologically as well as physically blocked a fading Nibali from Horner, who then put a big gap on to the finish. Seems like that was the final move that won him the Vuelta on this crazy climb.

@eljamo93, it's not gearing, it's Horner's constant standing @ cadence 60 to 70, with 42+ cm wide handlebars for increased leverage. If all the riders are doping then the sport is more fair, but if the authorities can bust on guy or one team and not another that’s not fair. I doubt all the riders dope. So it’s not fair. It’s way less fun to watch a race that’s not fair. And all those guys on the road when the racers are trying to pass each other. I would like under cover cyclists on electric bikes with cattle prods chasing the fans back and fined for those who don’t comply. Just have some deputized traffic cops and officials walking the sides of the road. Screw motorcycle cameras. A fix for that may be have every cyclist with a go pro or two or three on their bikes. They can probably make the bikes so light that they will still be the same weight with the cameras. Then the results for each day wouldn’t be known till later when all the footage was edited. But they could get some good commentators and boost the production value. I just don’t see the draw for the sport of cycling. Those fans suck. The motorcycles suck. The doping sucks. The camera work and commentary usually suck. I am way more interested in watching or participating in low key races. Though I do imagine from a fan’s perspective riding up the mountain with some liquor and getting drunk and yelling with all the other guys, then coasting down the hill after the race goes by would be a fun day.

Michael Strelka In the same year nibali won the giro d'italia, if there is a doper in this race isn't Nibali that is a true champion, he has demonstrated his class in all of three big race in the world: the giro, the vuelta and the tour. He is simply one of the best whit contador and froome.

@@reglisse42 he’s an out of the saddle rider with the by far the freshest legs in the group, only his 3rd race that year. also being an out of the saddle rider gives you better aero and seems to be better all around and plus he’s way lighter than Nibali meaning he’s pushing 510 watts compared to Nibali’s 430, Horner is winning that battle every time on a climb like this.

@@gustavosalvini1827 Nibali has never been caught doping... What are you saying? Nibali is one of the most important riders for many campaigns against doping in the group. The italians caught doping in that years were Basso, Di Luca, Riccò and Scarponi. And the funny fact is that they all were much better than Nibali before they were caught doping, but then, when they had to stop with it, they came back much weaker than him.
