Check Hoy's coach at 10:18 onwards. He probably saved Hoy's gold there. He knew Hoy had made a small mistake by not going full gas earlier and was URGING him to go 100%. Hoy did so immediately and just hung on in the back straight to prevent the overlap. All time great athlete combined with great coaching = gold.

Replying to SmartyPants: Keirin is a form of motor-paced cycle racing in which track cyclists sprint for victory following a speed-controlled start behind a motorized or non-motorized pacer. It was developed in Japan around 1948 for gambling purposes and became an official event at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Races are about 2 kilometers long: 8 laps on a 250 m track, 6 laps on a 333 m track, 5 laps on a 400 m track. Lots are drawn to determine starting positions for the sprint riders behind the pacer, which is usually a motorcycle, but can be a derny or tandem bicycle. Riders must remain behind the pacer for a predetermined number of laps. Initially it makes circuits at about 25 kilometres per hour (16 mph), gradually increasing to about 50 kilometres per hour (31 mph). The pacer usually leaves the track approximately 600-700 meters before the end. The winner's finishing speed is around 70 kilometres per hour (43 mph).

If the Kilo had stayed in the Olympic programme we might never have seen Hoy make the switch. In the end it probably benefitted his career and increased the total number of Olympic golds he eventually achieved.
@matthewrajan9248
@matthewrajan9248 3 жыл бұрын
Apparently Hoy was furious when the UCI decided to scrap the Kilo for 2008. Before his third Beijing gold medal ceremony, Pat McQuaid (UCI president) said 'you've got to forgive me now! Theres's no way you would have won three gold medals if the kilo was still on the programme'. Hoy replied 'fair enough!'

a short distance race on the velodrome with no possibility for separated lanes (like in track and field athletics) with more than two competitors (check 'individual sprint') only makes sense with a (motor) paced start. I think, they should though change the 6 pace laps to e.g. 2 or 3 pace laps with 2 laps left for the sprint battle, thats sufficient to pick up speed and would make the race more spectacular. The 6 (pace) and 2 (sprint) rule is from Japan, where it was invented in the 1940ies.

Either way, all of the equipment used by the British team is legal under the rules of the Track Cycling federation. I hear a lot of talk about out bikes being better etc... they probably are, but British cycling has huge financial backing from out lottery funding system AND from outside investors, For Example 'Team Sky' road racing team are funded by private investment. Cycling is huge in the UK now and it is rewarded financially, that is why the LEGAL equipment may be better.
