wanted to share my favouite Chris Knox story (I have two, lol). this was back in the early 1990's - I was at uni & I was going through a difficult breakup. a group of us, including my then boyfriend (who was acting like a complete and utter dick, being really really nasty to me - we'd been together a couple of years, we were living together and engaged, really upset and confused by his behaviour - later found out he was cheating on me) - anyway we were all out at a bar in Manner Mall in Wellington. him, me and a group of his mates. My mate Gary who is a musician (not a famous one, just a really passionate one) went out for a smoke, was gone a while - came and said to me 'çome with me'- 'where are we going'- wouldn't tell me. turns out he had found Chris Knox busking on the street. Chris Knox the well known, well respected - a legend - and there he is busking on the street. just because he loves music and playing - (as he explains to us). even more shocking then him busking there is no crowd around him, which is a shock to both Gary and me - he's tucked away on in Manners Mall - not on Courtney Place where there is more people passing, but still. "Not Given Lightly" is not yet the Vogels song but it is his most well known and loved song - and of course everyone always requests it - so he is reluctant to play it - but my friend Gary explains how his friend (my then boyfriend) is being a complete and utter jerk to me - I'm upset and well pretty miserable (all so true) and so... Chris Knox plays this song just to me, with Gary standing there grinning his head off. Never forget this moment, back there right now. thank you Chris ♥ Chris - we met a few years later - I came up to you after one of your shows in the (moved) Bar Bodega - cause my mate Matt (from Lamp Chop - an American band based in Nashville) had stayed with you years ago. you're such a sweet & lovely man. *_respect_*

He was fucking great when he was busking in the street. This video doesn't capture the sheer fierceness of his performance, nor the buzzing abrasiveness. Love Chris.

Chris Knox was one of my inspirations to get into music. I never forget the day I met him, when I was on his TV show the new artland project. Such a good dude. I'm thinking of singing this song for NZ music month. Love this song soooo much ever since I was a kid❤

Chris stayed with a friend of mine during a mid 90's US tour. At the time all my records were being stored there. My friend tried to get Chris to sign one of many Tall Dwarfs or Chris Know Lp's I owned but instead Chris wrote a hilarious review on the Dead C's "Whitehouse" LP complete with cartoons of Yeats, Morley and Russel. "Sorry to besmirch your precious collectable.." it began. Sadly, that record was stolen years later. His music means a great deal to me. Thanks Flying Nun for all the great records. Peace to Chris and his family.

Over here in Ireland New Zealand always appealed to me as a rather quiet country in the music department, I didn't hear much about it outside rugby. Before I found out about Chris Knox and Flying Nun! (thanks to Jeff Mangum) And I liked what I what I heard. Truely a gem.

There's good music from most cities in New Zealand. Auckland has the Mutton Birds and Th'Dudes (which also gave us national treasure Dave Dobbyn); Wellington has my favourite band Shihad and Flight of the Conchords; Christchurch gave us The Exponents (also known as the Dance Exponents) and the aforementioned The Gordons, and Dunedin, of course, gave us The Chills and other Dunedin Sound bands. (Chris Knox was born in Invercargill, but he's a national treasure). Even Palmerston North gave us the post-punk band The Skeptics, who were awesome and severely underrated.

I knew abotu Chris Knox 9 months ago, some weeks after my dearest Lola (my female cat) died at 11 years old. The days before her death, my brain shut down and I had a seizure, just two days before the animal died. Some weekes after, I was looking around in the web looking for info about epylpesy, and then, wow!, I knew the music and heard about the circumstances around Chris Knox. My personal condition, epylepsy, in this case, has droven me to know such an special and talented musician. I hope him the best. Excue all the readers for my engislh. I am from Spain and english is not my native language...

I have tens of thousands tracks in my itunes library (too many unfortunately). So I've heard a lot of tunes over the years. Considering this was written for his wife and kids, it's a "real" love song and could well be the best ever. Can't think of a better one (and the only one that makes me a little misty). Hope he recovers from stroke and continues for many years to come.

it was from a Vogels bread ad in New Zealand from the late 1990's , the jist was that a New Zealander living abroad got Vogel's bread , and his wife burnt his toast , Vogels is impossible to get overseas and is uniquely New Zealand , hence the " It was a year ago Michael , let it go . " FYI , Vogels is best served toasted with marmite .

Not Given Lightly Chris Knox Hello my friend It's morning, time to wake now Your body and mine entwined will have to break now I want your flesh, your warmth to stay beside me Oh, how I wish you could be deep inside me Show me your eyes, your love, most tender feeling And I'll give you mine, be truthful and revealing 'Cause it's you that I love And it's true that I love It's love not given lightly But I knew this was love And it's you that I love And it's more than what it might be When we're alone I cannot always face you Maybe my mood won't let these arms embrace you That doesn't mean my love's somehow diminished Give me the time to show our love's unfinished 'Cause it's you that I love And it's true that I love And it's love not given lightly But I knew this was love And it's you that I love And it's more than what it might be I need your body, your mind and your emotions Shed me your tears till I drown in your oceans 'Cause it's you that I love And it's true that I love It's love not given lightly But I knew this was love And it's you that I love And it's more than what it might be And every word I sing is true What can I say the words destroy all meaning There's only cliche to get across this feeling That it's you that I love And it's true that I love And it's love not given lightly But I knew this was love And it's you that I love And it's more than what it might be And every word I sing's for you 'Cause it's you that I love And it's true that I love And it's love not given lightly But I knew this was love And it's you that I love And it's more than what it might be This is a love song to John and Leisha's mother This isn't easy I might not write another But it's you that I love And it's true that I love And it's more than what it might be But I knew this was love And it's you that I love And it's love not given lightly 'Cause it's you that I love And it's true that I love And it's love not given lightly But I knew this was love And it's you that I love And it's more than what it might be
