I remember buying this in 1981. I was flatting with a bunch of Bob Dylan/The Eagles/ insert dull oldies music here, and I put this on at a party. Well, they were shocked. Disgusted even. I was seventeen I think and I said, "it's new, it's interesting and it's better than relistening to the same tired crap you continue to listen too". Yeah, so one flatmate absolutely got it. We're still friends 'til this day. The rest of them and their mates? Unsurprisingly, I don't see them.

Flying Num bands were the shit, they were inspired by American bands like the Velvet Underground obviously, but it seems like just as many American indie bands from the late 80’s on were inspired by NZ Flying Nun bands. Even Jay Reatard as punked out as his music could be was listening to and being inspired by Flying Nun bands when he passed. I don’t know this but I harbor a suspicion the Dead Milkmen where The Clean fans.

I was sadly unaware about Hamish's passing until a few weeks ago, though I did hear about his sudden disappearance back in November. The Clean (as with just about everyone here) was my introduction to the Dunedin Sound, a music scene that much like Olympia has a very special place in my music taste. This one along with Diamond Shine and Point That Thing are two of some of my favorite songs to ever come out of NZ as a whole. RIP man, you really helped shape indie rock as we know it today.

They are certainly considered one of NZ's best bands by people who have good taste, and want something more than the over produced, mindless dribble that's marketed to the masses. The Clean didn't want the fame and hype, that's the reason why they have remained out of the lime light so to speak. They have kept their art true and relative, it has stood the test of time and still holds its magic. Very inspiring.

This video was uploaded 13 years ago, the song came out 43 years ago and it just shows up. Really cool. Somebody mentioned Beatles and Dylan. The Dylan part to me is that the song is all verse 😂. I had to look in the description to see what year this was because the quality looked old and it was 1981. It looks normal but based on the horrendous post 70’s fashion I always found cool to just look the polar opposite. Going to check out more from them.
