I also love the fact that he does have a genuinely good singing voice. No autotuning, no correcting, nothing. Here he is with this couple and is giving them a sample of an old song of his which if I recall was made soon after his break up with Gwyneth Paltrow. So he is redeeming the song by singing it for a couple who are about to get married. What a legend.

Over time I have bought guitar, bass and piano tabs to a number of songs in the past 20 years. I have no idea how to play a piano, but I can buy a sheet of tabs to a given song and then spend a couple weeks just memorizing the keystrokes, learning one part of the melody and then gradually adding another few notes as time progresses. Eventually I can usually emulate several famous songs. Again, I can’t read music, but I can memorize finger movements…I know exactly where to push and strum and thus I can usually nail the rhythm as well. For organ (pipe organs or synthesized organs or whiz-bang electronic keyboards. For many of these songs I can usually nail the foot peddles as well. To my point, I’ve memorized several ColdPlay hits and their songs usually elicit ohhhhs and awwwws at parties. But then I let everyone down with the sudden and obvious realization that I’m nothing more than a very faked piano, guitar player, musician, and singer! For me it is all about hours of memorization and lots of well practiced keystrokes. At least it does sound good. For the most part. I even add my own flair to a riff, here and there. But a real musician can pick me out as a cheep fake in less than 30 seconds. It does give me a lot of good practice to keep my brain and voice well “oiled”…and my wife likes to listen to me fumble and practice. She loves music here in our house….on tune, or not! If I put in a good practice session on any one day, I can drop my voice way down lowwwwww by about another octave. Same with one higher octave if even into falsetto. To which I will say, if you are looking for things to keep your brain and voice active, all this has worked wonderfully for me. Thanks to Coldplay for providing so many hits to memorize!!
