I saw Jordan & Mullin in '83, play in a scrimmage game in Manhattan, Ks. They were on the Pan American team that became the '84 Olympic team. This was before Jordan was known as Air Jordan. My favorite player at the time was Wayman Tisdale so I was more excited to see him than anyone. After that scrimmage, Jordan made a believer out of me. You couldn't see his rawness, athleticism, & dominance at North Carolina on tv. In person was nearly super natural.

Chris Mullin ..... here's what I saw, and what I know. I'm an aging Baby Boomer and began watching college basketball in 1961 and began as a fan of the St. John Redmen under coach Joe Lapchick and a Celtics fan under coach Auerbach. Chris was one of the smartest ballers on BOTH offense and defense. Great shooter, made his teammates better. He was a left handed Larry Bird. But most importantly about Chris .... he was good for the game and he's a good man.

Thank you Chris Mullin for mentioning Pippen's defense on Mark Jackson. I was surprised it wasn't mentioned in the Last Dance. For those that do not know, Mark Jackson was killing the Bulls, not only by his own offense but how he created plays. Phil then put Pippen on Mark and shut him down. No bull, some of the most impressive defense I've ever seen. Mark could barely move the ball up to half court because Pippen was on him like glue! Pippen's defense changed that series.

Both the defense of Pippen and MJ are what made the Bulls' unusually great. Their long-armed one on one, as well as doubling down on the post took the emphasis away from shot blocking centers. I always said, "If Jerry West had played in the 3 pt era, his offense would have been as good or better than MJ's." However, West could never come close to Jordan's defense - which was phenomenal. Mark Jackson was a very good offensive player with the tear drop, etc, etc. For Pippen to shut him down speaks volumes.

It is no fluke that Jordan won all of these close series like the 7 game series with Indiana Mullin talks about. The Last Dance talked about what a great team Indiana had and it was true and just as good as Chicago on paper, if not better. But there is something about Jordan that is intangible. I play at a much lower level in YMCA pickup games and there is one guy down there who plays at a different level than the rest of us. Just a tremendous scorer and the best shooter I have ever played against. Now you would think that after choosing up teams evenly, his teams would win only half of their games because he has to play with guys who are not as good to even things out. That's not how it works though. The way it works is the scores will be close until it gets close to the end. When the game is on the line, this guy just takes over the game and will not let his teams lose. He is impossible to guard and his team ends up winning and you are left saying - "Damn we were so close". A rebound here or a loose ball there and we would have won. But it doesn't happen that way. It is the intangible that will never show up on paper or on some analytics report. You can't see it, but it's there.

True...very true. That intangible is called "clutch". People today (largely because of the media) are sometimes so blinded by stats that they don't realize those intangibles are "real". Decision making, defense, intensity...very real on the court but invisible on the stat sheet. I loved your story.

Indiana had the personnel to defeat Chicago: More go to players and a deeper bench. But the difference was Michael Jordan's superhuman willpower and ability to elevate the level of play from his teammates (Kerr and Kukoc in Game 7). And I'm a Bulls fan.

This is a great comment, couple of good ones. Thought you were gonna loose me w telling me about your gym hero stories lol. But you made perfect sense. This is exactly what younger ppl don't understand or you can't explain to them when they are trying to compare players. You didn't have to be a Bulls fan to feel, understand this. We all saw the 50 PT games, the highlights etc. Yes, clearly when Jordan had an agenda or the team was struggling 9 out 10 times you were gonna see 40 plus. But what kids don't understand was what your talking about was the actual game plan for the Bulls. Virtually every good team back then played similar basketball. Jordan could just let the game come to him and have 20 or 25 going into 4th quarter bunch crunch time hits. Everything turns up a notch or two. It goes from being 80 -78 with 5 mins left to 92- 85 as the click winding down. A steal here, a big rebound, 3pt play, and a few defensive stops. At the end MJ is standing there as click stokes 0 showing you your heart. 5 mins left you either felt like we are gonna be the Bulls this time, MJ is going down. To leaving thinking we never had a chance! MJ is the goat in my opinion because I do not buy that any player before or after goes 6 for 6 in that era while retiring to play baseball. Would LeBron or Kobe have some chips, sure! 6 for 6 no. Jordan dominated nest era in basketball! Period!

Yes,the best players know the right plays at the right times.What is needed and when it is needed.They have an incredible understanding of momentum shifts in games and know how to turn things back in their favour when it's needed the most. I also say the best players can see what the spectators see sitting in the grandstand and they play exactly to that manner.It's always a pleasure to watch!

26michaeluk I think part of the reason why is because by the time he was in a really memorable playoff series on national tv (97-98 eastern conference finals against Jordan’s Bulls) Mully was already well on the downside of his career, averaging 11 points and 3 rebounds a game that season. I've been a huge fan of Mullin's since his Run TMC days. I loved him so much as a kid that I used to imitate his shooting style when I played! Always a class act, a humble guy, and one of the hardest workers you've ever seen. He made up for his lack of speed and athleticism with hard work. He was also very open and honest about his problems with alcoholism. He, Tim, and Mitch might still be the most entertaining trio I've ever seen and that includes Steph, Klay and Draymond.

My best friend, growing up was a maniac. He was one of those people who walked the tightrope between genius and insanity. He had 76ers season tickets, the row behind the visitor’s bench. When Mullin was playing and his drinking was kind of in the news, they played the Sixers. My (former) friend was breaking Mullin’s balls about being an alcoholic. The dude was relentless and viscous. It went on all game. Right after the game ended, he took it too far (I never found out exactly what he did) and Mullin grabbed him around the neck and started choking him. It was a big deal but I think they were able to keep it out of the news. My guy sued Chris for like 2 million dollars. The cool thing is that they talked about it and the law suit was dropped without a settlement. The wild part is they became friends and the last time I talked to my boy, they still kept in touch. Mullin was actually the guy who got my friend into rehab a couple of years after the incident. He’s a real good dude.

For those of us who couldn’t watch the NBA live there were so many players that we were in awe of. One of the best ad campaigns was the Nike ad for the Dream Team. Around 3:50 Chris says that the games were close..."we pushed them to game seven." But his next thought was rightfully "Michael." The fact is that the score was close but the Bulls had Michael, so the outcome was never in much doubt. In the last minutes of a close game there was no one better! I was a fan, and I really never worried. I actually felt sorry for teams like Indiana and Cleveland. It was an absolute treat to be a fan of that dynasty.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. Male. Even in my prime (20-27), I would shoot well in shootarounds, shooting like Chris Mullin. I've never been quick, fast, or a great jumper, so I always had fun trying to play the "brain game" like Chris Mullin. Michael's era, we never heard of facilitator. We didn't even think that Pip is a facilitator. You have to win/dominate to show greatness. Best thing about the previous era is how each player try to win a championship for the team that drafted them. Now is different.

He has always been a good player. He always gave my Jazz a hard time when at Golden State. The Jazz where favored and Chris and team put the Jazz out in 5 back when the first round was 5 games. He continued when he went to Indiana.

I'm old enough to remember Mullin and Walter Berry at St. John's. The old Big East was the best college basketball ever, IMO.
