I just heard Chris Potter play recently and it completely melted my brain. I'd never hear anybody play like that. Instant fan.

I was in a little jazz club some years ago, and the combo playing had a sax player. During the break, I went up and asked him what modern day jazz sax players I should look for to listen to. One of the first names he mentioned was Chris Potter.

HUGE Chris Potter fan here. His answer to the classical question makes so much sense. I can hear it in his phrasing and compositions.

Great interview which I missed first time. I got to see Chris perform with Dave Holland's band and that was a concert to remember.

Got into Chris’s playing and his music a few years ago and he’s absolutely superb as an artist and improviser. He’s certainly a credit and a noteworthy contributor to the landscape of contemporary jazz that people should know about.

Thanks a lot Rick. Good choice of questions. I don't hear South Caolina in his playing, it was a surprise info. He sounds like a NYC guy :) great sax player for sure !!!

Rick, thanks to you covering music of every genre imaginable this hear blues/rock guy is finally a full on jazzer. Personally, I never thought it possible but you finally did it. I had my first jazz-gasm earlier today and OMG it was fantastic (Brecker & Metheny). Just hope all my myopic blues buddies go easy on me. Seriously though, you're one in a million for bringing so much varied music based content to KZbin. It means a lot to a great many people - more than you could possibly know. Thank you!

Appreciate you giving interviews like this a second shift here. A day like this with Charlie passing makes you appreciate being able to talk to the legends still walking. I was listening to Dick Dale's pipeline cover he did with Stevie Ray Vaughan because it makes me happy, and was like...man it would be cool if Rick could talk to DD...he's gotta be gettin up there, and I look him up and realize I missed his passing in 2019.

If you don’t know Chris Potter you don’t know music. Sorry just quoting another video here. 😁 But seriously folks, I do think his latest album, on vinyl of course, is fantastic. Good interview guest Mr. Beato. 👍

Talking composition I think you might’ve been alluding to Chris’ album “Song For Anyone” which is a masterful album with strings, woodwinds, and rhythm section. So much Stravinsky in that album and it’s so enjoyable y’all gotta check it out.

RIP Charlie Watts. Meanwhile Chris Potter!!! What an incredible improviser. I love his invention, from hard core jazz through to jamming with Snarky Puppy, the guy doesn’t seem capable of playing below 100%. The only better living sax players to my ears are Sonny Rollins and Wayne Shorter, but Rollins hung up his horn a few years back. Now Rollins… there would be an historic interview!

If you haven't seen it you have to watch the video Bob Reynolds (a great sax player himself and super Potter fan!) posted of Potter sitting in with Snarky Puppy doing Lingus. Cory Henry's solo is probably my favorite key solo of all time but Potter is equally unbelievable. And by all accounts he is a super nice guy, lots of lessons to be learned for the lesser musician pricks out there.

That solo was my gateway into Potter. It hits me so hard I actually avoid it, cause it wipes me out! The Sirens and The Dreamer is the Dream are now what I'm listening to on the daily. So glad he hooked up with Eicher. Fabulous sounding recordings.

Great choice for a conversation. I've been a fan of Chris since I saw him in Cambridge around 2006 or so. Got to see him in 2019 in LA with Eric Harland and James Francies. Whooooooo that show was dynamite. Check out their album Circuits if you get a chance. Fantastic portrait of where I think jazz is progressing in a beautiful way.
