There's something about Chris Robinson, in addition to the music, that has always fascinated me (I am straight). What's really cool is a guy like this who went full cycle through glory, shit, and everything in between and now is obviously in a great place in his life - the peace in his soul comes through in his voice. Good for him. Keep making music!

Chad Stern Gonna be honest. I barely remember their performance. However, in our defense,, had we known they were about to blow up, we probably would’ve paid more attention. We prob hung for a couple of tunes. Then after that, went out back to the green room...meaning, our van. (Which I’m sure is exactly what MCG did during our set.Lol!). I sorta remember chatting w/Chris briefly(basically “Hey man. Sup?”) as we loaded out and they loaded in. They were just another band like us. I remember thinking they were yet another “Athens-y band. Musically speaking, they were definitely no where near what they eventually became. Truth be known ..and we would’ve never admitted it back then,...but so many of us Georgia bands were not so secretly, REM wannabes. Followed the Crowes for many years (hence my nickname) but Chris has revealed himself to be inauthentic. I work in prisons and the toughest guys you meet never tell you how tough they are - you just know. Similarly, the real hippies don'y have to go around endlessly using words like community, and emphasising how it's not about the money - you just know. Jerry Garcia was a real down to earth guy, even cops arresting him felt bad, he came over so friendly. Chris however, sadly, is full of anger and bitterness. We know how he tried to write out Steve Gorman from the Crowes' financial centre, while Jerry worked longer tours to ensure everyone in the Dead organisation was taken care of. As for John Mayer, never heard of him before this period in his career. Heard my first show and was utterly blown away by his playing. As a result I did check out his solo stuff. So he made some daft comments when he was young - who gives a stuff. He's not trying to be something he's not. I feel excited about Dead and Company, while CRB (tell me that name wasn't chosen to hurt Rich) have slowly fallen from my musical horizon with each self-indulgent release. I'm feeling Chris is jealous again.

@@cinsationalcinema1776 - There's an old saying, "The difference between friends and family is - you can pick your friends." Unfortunately, sometimes you have to leave family behind to save yourself. This was the case with the Everly Brothers, the Kinks, and many other acts that were based on brothers. And then there's the groups that had a pair of creative partners, who were great when they got along, starting with the Beatles. Fans of the Beatles know that their manager, Brian Epstein, managed the boys in the band, keeping Paul and John apart a lot and pairing them with the other guys while traveling. It was after his death that the friction between the pop titans was allowed to become noticeable, then unbearable. And all them words are about only one band! One thing's certain, though - Chris' success hasn't made him more empathetic or reasonable. He has what Eddie Van Halen said best about a former singer in his own band, "He has LSD, Lead Singer's Disease." There's no cure that I know of, and going forward often involves bottoming out. Fortune passes everywhere.

@tylernelson19937 жыл бұрын
How? Because John has collected different styles and licks from other guitarist? Thats a lame statement with a flimsy argument. If that were the case, almost every guitarist would be put into this category. This same thing was said about a guy named Stevie Ray Vaughan back in the the late 60s, early 70s. SRV never really invented a lick or a playing style or genre of music.. He picked and chose riffs and solo licks he heard from guys like Jimi Hendrix, Albert and Freddie King, T Bone Walker and of course his older brother. Did he make it into his own unique "SRV sound" and song dynamic's? Yeah, but John has done the same exact thing with what he's picked up from other guitarist. Its the nature of music.
@rafaelmarchanteangulo45827 жыл бұрын
I agree that the statement about the licks is more than a bit clumsy. However the statement "Jerry Garcia was one of the most unique artists ever" is 100% true, which can't be said of JM. Also the statement "everything the Jerry stood for and spoke about JM is the antithesis of" is also 100% true. That's all from my perspective, obviously. I sympathise with JM a bit, although like Chris I was never interested in what he does and I find it a bit too opportunistic and mainstream. Still I think he's an outstanding guitarrist in his niche, but bringing SRV as a comparison perhaps not ideal...

Stevie was a musical genius who knew every chord and mode and scale and trick - but he somehow kept it very tasteful while playing his a$$ off. I kind of think that makes him unique, he was so extremely musically literate and very forceful but he had a really specific idea of how he wanted to come across and great focus.
@AuntAlnico47 жыл бұрын
jonas brave # just yet set the facts straight ... Stevie Ray Vaughn's music theory was close to none. meaning he said himself that he didn't know any music theory and he thought that music theory was very boring he felt it was like math and he fell asleep in math class. But Stevie knew how to play by ear and playing what felt right and that's what matters. he could play so fast but he knew the right notes that had deep feeling and he knew how to reach out and touch people's hearts with the music. John Mayer plays a strat and trying to do what Stevie did but I think John Mayer it's way way over over rated. But yeah Stevie is the man and he is the one who inspired me to pick up a guitar and keep playing through the tough part for most player s , the beginning is hard but of you stick to it and learn some stuff you can go any where with the instrument and take it to the level of Stevie or at least try to. no one can touch Stevie Ray.

"Jerry Garcia only ever played his only licks..." - Seriously? Jerry's style became unique over time, but I doubt he or any other guitarist could honestly claim to never playing anyone else's licks. John Mayer has been doing a very good job in the position he's in - he's dealing with an incredible legacy, and as far as I can tell, the fans are responding positively, along with the other band members. Chris Robinson comes off as an opinionated snob, with a big ego, and of course this plays right into Howard's thing. I suspect that Chris is actually jealous of John Mayer - wishes he'd been invited to be in Dead and Company.

Chris has been running his mouth for decades, and he's lying about why he didn't want to rejoin the Crowes. He gets half of Kate Hudson's money from the divorce, so he can just sit back with no pressure, smoke dope, write god awful, bloated songs with no focus at all, have mediocre musicians around him and still play clubs, being THE guy. In the Crowes, his brother got attention, and when Marc Ford came back for the reunion, that also took away from Chris's ego. A shame, really. The guy was way cooler back ni the early/mid 90s when he actually cared about the music as opposed to satisfying his ego. His comment on John Mayer is spot on, though. Andrew Martin... I though the first part of your comment was pure trolling. And I was right. Here's an interview excerpt with Kate Hudson: "... Chris and I had no animosity,’ Kate is keen to point out. ‘Chris and I divorced for the right reasons - we just didn’t work. But we remain extremely close.’ The partnership between the older rocker and the young, pretty daughter of Hollywood royalty did seem unlikely - there was a 13-year age gap and they got together just as she sprang to stardom with Almost Famous. Chris was on tour with his band a lot during the marriage and when he was home Kate would get up at 5am to go on set to find his musician friends crashed out on the floor amid old pizza crusts. But she doesn’t blame any of that for the break-up. ‘The reasons are personal, but those things weren’t difficult,’ she says. ‘They can be, but dealing with work schedules is always a challenge. I think that’s true for everybody.’ ‘I’m never worried about Kate. I’m worried about the guy who marries Kate,’ her mother’s partner, actor Kurt Russell, observed when the couple got engaged. But impressively, Kate and Chris have maintained such a close relationship that they talk several times a day; Kate even jokingly advises him which girls to date. ‘Chris and I are both so focused on Ryder. I feel lucky to have him in my life,’ she says. As for her new role as a single mother, ‘It’s pretty much the same as before. Chris is still working. He loves to go on the road, and it’s not easy to bring a toddler on a tour bus. But I can’t wait till Ryder gets a bit older and I get some time off, so we can go back on the road with his dad’s band." I loved Steve Marriott and Ronnie lane too and saw Steve Marriott out of the small faces and humble pie play in a pub in Putney London when he was with the pack of three. Chris Robinson is a great front man in the style of Steve Marriott that great bluesy soul rock voice. Yeah they both were are so good. And Steve Marriott was a cockney guy and real andnot at all a snob. Yes I can see he's spiritual dysfunctional different and I love that. Yes decriminalise drugs. The prisons would be half empty and drugs is a social problem and so many people have had their lives ruined because they are labeled criminal for a social problem. Often the victims are people that never fitted into the system or are vulnerable and a few probably ended up on drugs or drink because they were interfered with by a fucking pedophile when they were kids. Jimmy page done some great music with the alternative poet singer songwriter Roy Harper who played the Stonehenge festival for free. Nick Harper his son is amazing guitarist who does so much work for the love hope strength foundation a charity that brings medical care to the people in the Himalayas who have cancer. Those Himalayan mountain people are so poor but so rich as kind happy smiling people. Nick Harper played Everest base camp the highest gig in the world. Iwe were mortified when the earthquake hit Nepal. We saw the quake on you tube when it destroyed Everest base camp.

Chris is right, however painfully. Aerosmith went from being one of the greatest bands ever, from the early tours right up to some great nights in 1978 with songs like Kings and Queens, No More No More, Lord of The Thighs to total blob-sloppery, farting out songs with the "KISS songwriter Desmond Child" master of Schlock Rock and making a band as popular as Stanley said "cola cola"--- there is simply no reason any artist must sell out, especially when wealthy as Aerosmith was and is. Neil Young always made the music he wanted no matter the money, no matter the trends, there is no inevitable course of sell out and schlockery. It is too bad the Crowes cannot put whatever infantile conflict away and tour for the music and their fans, and bring back Ford as well.

You're kidding right? His back was fine. He was fed up with the BS. He asked if they wanted to write music together. Rich said no thanks. So Page went home. Steve Gorman writes about it in his book.

@@chriss2452 No sure what I'm supposedly kidding about. Steve Gorman can write whatever he wants, but he's biased and his sour grapes make him what is known to intelligent people as an unreliable narrator.

Steve has no problem admitting he also acted very wrong, so if he's handing out sour grapes it's for himself as well. He's stressing that his book isn't THE story, but HIS story, I think that is the least biased you could be. Ever heard the R brothers do some serious self reflection and admit they are wrong? About intelligence; I think the most intelligent thing is to listen to both sides. And yes, I think Steve is smarter than Chris and Rich. Unfortunately, he had to find ways to deal with the brothers' dysfunction, and they call that manipulation. They don't seem to see their own flaws.

I have lost so much respect for Chris Robinson for so many different reasons , his remarks about the Magpie Salute are laughable as are his comments about how he is not in it for the money .Yet he tried to wrestle control of the Black Crowes name away from his brother as well as suggesting that original drummer Steve Gorman get paid on salary . He tries to diminish his brothers contribution to the black crowes which is the biggest insult .

re: John Mayer... People seem to bring up SRV when discussing JM. To my mind, (I majored in Jazz performance and I am a working musician and music teacher so I'm not completely clueless about this) John Mayer is a competent musician who was well educated academically (went to berkelee)... but SRV was an astronomically talented one who didn't need any schooling because he was it. He had heaps of personality and mojo which JM lacks (to my mind). JM's a pop star who happens to be a good musician and play blues... he's well overrated and has really not added anything to what was there in the world of popular music although he does play well generally... Chris Robinson: dyslexic, unable to play anything beyond basic chords on guitar, a careless loudmouth, etc... but he's left a mark in music ( particularly R'N'R) with his voice + songwriting + quirky grooviness, similar to that of SRV with his guitar playing and his voice to some extent... Mayer's done none of that as far as I am concerned, he's just a run of the mill, skilfull player... It's a matter of taste obviously but it does come across as stupid when people get offended about a rock star expressing their unadultered opinion. Like PC belonged in R'N'F'R ... Just to put things into perspective, the fact that JM studied at Berkelee confirms what CR said about playing other people's licks: that's an integral part of academic music study: to learn other people music and their technical particularities. It's clear that Jerry Garcia also learnt from other people, but certainly in a different and less technical way, he had an artistic vision of his own which created a unique movement and a vibrant and powerful subculture which, Chris is correct in pointing out, JM does not represent in the least. And by the way, there's thousands of working guitarists who could have filled in the place JM got in the Dead as well or better than he has. Even just in my own limited experience I've studied and worked with many people over the years who (to put it the way someone puts it in another comment comparing JM to CR) can play circles around John Mayer. It seems to me that the choice to invite him, rather than someone else, to join the dead has more to do with his popularity and the fact that he certainly has brought more people to the already well populated Dead following, than to his musicianship. Otherwise, to use an easy example, ANY of the Black Crowes lead guitarists would have been at the very minimum as good a musical choice (that's being generous, kind and taking into account their irregularities; in other words, they weren't always at the same level but they reached peaks beyond anything JM has done by himself or contributed or contributed to D&C)... Marcus King right now would widely surpass any of them; Derek Trucks would bring any rock/blues/jam band to a completely new level with plenty more taste and originality than JM ever could... I could carry on...

J Barksdale other people's opinion is useful for someone who doesn't have an informed opinion of his own.
