Before Chris Shiflett’s show at Ryman Auditorium opening up for Blackberry Smoke in early 2023, he joined us at 3Sirens Studio in East Nashville to talk about the punk and country continuum-and how his interest in Americana stemmed from hearing alt-country songs by Uncle Tupelo and Wilco in the van while touring with No Use for a Name. Chris then played a stripped-down version of “Dead and Gone” from his forthcoming album “Lost at Sea” and shared the story of a lightbulb moment he had about playing acoustic guitar live.
“I was on tour with Foo Fighters and Rhett Miller asked me if I wanted to open up a show for him in Boston at City Winery,” Chris recalled from sometime around 2018, remembering how in that moment he was still uncomfortable when playing acoustic for a room full of people. “Why does this scare the fuck out of me every time I go do this-you’re so laid bare,” Chris said of those early solo shows. “It’s like one step away from being a stand-up comic or something. You are totally exposed.”
After finishing up with his set, Chris watched Rhett take the stage and through the rest of the show realized how great a time the Americana artist and Old 97’s frontman had while performing and how that translated to the energy of the room. “That was the lightbulb for me-you have to actually enjoy what you’re doing up there.”
“Lost at Sea” is the third album Chris has recorded in Nashville-this time over at Sound Emporium with producer Jaren Johnston-and his regular sojourns to the city have not only become a part of the music he’s making today but have also continued to inform his understanding of West Coast country and the musical history of his native California.
During his time with us at 3Sirens, Chris also shared a cover of Merle Haggard’s “Ramblin’ Fever” and the title track off of “West Coast Town,” again accompanied by band members Fox Fagan on bass and Robert Jolly on percussion, which will appear in a future Contrary Western session further illustrating the intersection of Chris’ musical influences.
