The Main Point was something special. I was blessed to have that when I was in high school and coming up. Not only did I see Chris there many time, I saw Bonnie, Dave Van Ronk, Jimmy Jeff Walker, Leo Kottke, Sonny and McGee, Jackson Browne, in a small, intimate, no alcohol venue so I could get in when I was in high school. Nothing like it today, but those of us who were lucky to be will never forget.

Me too. I lived in Malvern until 1976. I also saw many shows at the Main Point. Saw Chris there among others. I saw a young Bruce Springsteen and E Street there before they broke nationally.

Wow, Chris is so overlooked, he's a star in his niche but I feel he should've been better known in his long career...great stories, this guy is a fantastic blues finger stylist and witty folk songwriter. Love this guy.

About 15 years ago I was in Jorma Kaukonen’s class at his Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp in Pomeroy, OH and Chris was one of the instructors for the weekend. We would jam every night til midnight and he joined us all three nights. He is such a nice, genuine guy. He also gave all us students a concert and he is just so very talented!!!!! Great memories

So eloquent. I have been a CS fan for a long time, but I now have a much deeper appreciation of the man. Thanks, Otis. You must have him back. His tales of the road are priceless.

I was watching Willie's birthday show last night, and saw this happy guitarist in the background. " Hey, that's Otis' friend Tom", I thought. It was like it was a friend of mine up there.

With the exception of his very 1st album I have all of Chris's releases. All About The Bones was on pre-delivery so I didn't miss out. As with them all not a bad record, not even a good record but an excellent record and will be played many times. I have had the privilege to see him perform 8 or more times in the UK and never been disappointed. Just a really great writer and performer. It was really interesting to see this conversation with him, so thanks for putting it out there.

❤Otis, this is sweet. Thank you and Chris Smithers for this insight into why Bonnie was steeped in blues knowledge because of Dick Waterman…very dot connecting

I got to hear Bonnie play and sing at a small place in San Francisco once in the 80s with my x husband ( we were still friends). She was so good it was a real treat.

Chris Smither, John Prine and Guy Clark were my “BIG THREE” that I’ve listened to everything they’ve ever cut and gone to see them every chance I got. Have seen Smither in MA, NY, TN, PA, CA, IL & MN if that lets folks who havent seen him perform know how great his shows are!

This must be a collection of the shorter ones? I love hearing the John Prine stories. He was such a nice guy and the songs he wrote were brilliant. Right up to and including the last record! I'm learning a few off that record now. I just don't know where he gets it from, but I wish I got it from there too!! LOL 8) --gary

00:00 Bonnie Raitt 05:37 John Prine 12:54 Townes Van Zandt 15:28 Bob Dylan 20:36 blues pioneers 35:04 Chris Smither / 20 albums A little hijack: Photographs on the cover and inserts of Smither's 1972 album ("Don't It Drag On") offer a pleasant introduction to the work of Duane Michals, a unique blend of photography and literature. The gradual transition in music release formats, resulting in the overwhelming prevalence of downloading and streaming, has taken away a _once_ vital part of listening experience. Image/text files may be attached to digital releases, but it's not the same. Well, that's the way it goes. Thank you, Mr Smither. Thank you, Mr Gibbs. --Waving from Istanbul.
